You realize the festival needs paying customers to be sustainable right, the more people, the better the chance that it comes back every year.
you realize that there is no danger of this fest not coming back right? even if everyone on this board decided to not to go. we would all be replaced by another crowd of people. bonnaroo will be fine.
I wasn't speaking in board member terms, I was speaking in general.
ntrt's animated profile picture has me on the floor. its better than three phish.. phishes.. phishi. whatever the plural of multiple phish shows would be

it still stands. if the jam crowd or any other type crowd that is offended enough by this lineup to stay away, they will be replaced by an entirely new crowd. dmb will be a big draw to those that have never been before, kol will be a big draw to those that have never been before, stevie wonder... jay-z, nas, all the metal, all the county, all the blurgrass/roots. people are still going to come.

I completely agree. I know a ton of people who are going this year that I would have never expected to see at Bonnaroo. A large portion of these people are hot white girls. This is change I can believe in...especially since there also are plenty of non-crappy acts on this lineup that I really want to see.

here here to more hot white girls, there is plenty to see/hear, but i still could use 2 or 3 more solid indie adds.
I hope you are there, Britt. I fully expected to see both you guys and Neil Young as the lineup was dropping. If that would have happened, I would not have had a single complaint about the lineup.
I also wanted Roger Waters and MMJ, but I recognized that those were pipe dreams.
Exact numbers are difficult or impossible to find becuase they vary depending on the sources you use, but most figures you can find are in these ranges:
I'm just wondering if this is correct, I honestly have no idea. If it is correct then they are doing a poor job at replacing festival goers with new festival goers. Usually when you replace something you dont lose 25,000 of that something

In 2004 they realized they sold too much and the festival was overcrowded. I don't think they just lost 25,000 people.....just that they capped the tickets at a certain number. They usually say they want around 70,000.

No. I'm sorry but that's just not how it works. This "new crowd" you speak of are not festival goers. They'll see DMB, KOL, their favorite metal or bluegrass bands, etc. at their own shows. For example, there are four metal bands this year (two of those are debatable if they're even metal or not.) You really think any metalhead is going to travel to roo and spend all of that money when there are plenty of metal festivals and club shows that they can go to for much cheaper? Same thing applies for bluegrass. Nothing on this lineup is going to make anyone go to their first bonnaroo besides maybe some old folks for the legends, that's about it. Get real.

you're wrong. and i know it for a fact. i know some fans of these metal bands that have probably never been to a fest, guess what? they're going. all these different people will come. my sister almost came this year and i know she never even thought about going to a fest this year. have you not looked around you lately at bonnaroo? it's a lot more diverse than it use to be? just to use an example, there were a lot more black people at bonnaroo last year. you build it and they will come. it would surprise you.

More people will find out about it every year, and there will always be people who get hooked, but I don't know if this is the audience that will do it. I'm not trying to be elitist, but certain bands have big fan communities that are more likely to go to a fest. Bruce, Phish, NIN all have huge fan communities that would follow them around the country/world. DMB is really the only one in that league right now. Just because you know 4 people who want to go to the fest this year doesn't prove much.

You realize that at some point each and every one of us were not "festival goers". All it takes is one awesome festival to make you a bigger fan of music.

^^There is honestly no real answer to this question you all are arguing about. I know that the jamband followers are stereotyped as fest people and travelers, but that doesn't mean that metal or bluegrass fans won't come to bonnaroo or other fests. When myself and my group first came to bonnaroo it wasn't for the jambands. We saw a couple headliners we liked and about 20 or so acts we wanted to see on the undercard. We have been back since. I have a feeling that is how the majority of the people decide to go to bonnaroo the first time. To quote somone on this board "the headliners get you to bonnaroo the first time, the undercard keeps you coming back." So we wont know has this lineup will draw people in unti lafter the fest. Remember this site is only a few hundred regulars and not necessarily the typical fest goer. Also, you need to consider the economy and gas proices along with the festival not wanting 100,000 people. I would venture to guess that one major reason that 2008 was the lowest estimated attendance was that a lot of people going to the festival drive significant distances and gas was over $4 a gallon that summer, while last summer it was down under $3. Feel free to keep the argument going it is kind of entertaining to read on a boring day at work.

That's all supposing that all these people listen to just one type of music. And given the variety of genres that Bonnaroo has come to represent, I don't think people who listen to one type of music are the target demographic. That said, it helps having a festival that can schedule a solid tent/day of some of the best acts of any given genre. I came for the indie last year and had a great time.
But yeah, indie is a little lacking this year compared to last. But then again, at this point last year they hadn't yet announced the wonderful David Byrne tent.

There won't be nearly as many people there for the first time this year compared to past years. wjh34 says headliners are what gets people there the first time. Well Phish, Bruce, NIN, PJ, The Police, Radiohead, etc. don't tour all of the time. DMB does, every year even if they don't have a new album out Dave still tours the country. Jay-Z has already been around the whole country two times over since his last album came out. These are not eclectic, rare, unique or special headliners. Their fans will continue to save hundreds of dollars by seeing them in their hometowns.

I think you are probably going to be right, but for arguments sake phish, bruce, police, tool, NIN, and I think pearl jam were all on massive tours when they came to roo. Not sure about radiohead. Granted, Bruce and Phish fans follow their bands everywhere and NIN (was supposed to be last american show) and Police was a reunion. So this year we have Stevie who I dont think has a major tour going on right now or hasn't announced it yet. KOL is only playing one show this year (supposedly) at roo, Tenacious D don't tour much, and one of two shows that Flips will play DSOTM (according to them) we have a few "unique acts". I know KOL and TD dont compare to the above mentioned in awesomeness to me or most on this board, but there are acts with major appeal even if they arent popular on this board. With all this said we just have to wait to see how much of a draw this years bands have. I know more people where I live are talking about Roo this year than last. Whether we like it or not outside of our music nerd circles such as inforoo there is a more mainstream appeal to bands like The D and Weezer than David Byrne and Wilco. The questions is: will those people i speak of talking about the lineup actually purchase tickets to come to Bonnaroo? We can't answer that yet.
People have the right to complain, the reason this is lasting so long is veterans aren't jumping all over every complaining post like usual. That's mostly because the lineup is a bit subpar.

I've gotten tired of arguing with the complainers because most of the complainers act like nobody in the world can like this lineup. People spend so much of their focus and hate on a few bands instead of praising all of the great bands that are on the lineup. Everything has to come down to competition with other festivals. I still feel like everyone's so upset because everyone had super high expectations. After being told Neil and Roger would be on the farm from people who claimed it was almost certain everyone on here was expecting the moon. It may not be the best lineup Bonnaroo has ever seen in some people's eyes (I think it's an awesome lineup, for the record) but it's still going to be an awesome weekend of music for everyone who goes.
Based on all the negativity in the posts on here one would think that the whole weekend will suck and there is no good acts.

I'm amazed that you've fought this battle as long and hard as you have. There are plenty of us who are excited this year's lineup. But what's the point of trying to convince people who feel otherwise. Yes there's a lot of negativity. But don't let it get to you.

It doesn't really get to me. I don't really feel upset about it or anything. I just used to like coming here and talking music. Now it's all bickering and arguments.

Do you work for Bonnaroo or something? They suggested several big acts would be there when they knew they wouldnt. Bonnaroo's own twitter probably reaches a bigger audience than CoS or Inforoo.
