I agree Bonnaroo should not have twittered all of the indications of huge things, but I'm aligned with itrainmonkeys and billypilgrim on this. I know there was at least 25 to 30 acts I was pumped about when the lineup initially came out, and I've found at least 10-15 new bands that I can't wait to see. The only bickering you'll here from me is when the schedule comes out and Daryl Hall and Chromeo are conflicted with The Flips. that said its a good problem to have. I guess i just like to look on the better side of things.
I've gotten tired of arguing with the complainers because most of the complainers act like nobody in the world can like this lineup. People spend so much of their focus and hate on a few bands instead of praising all of the great bands that are on the lineup. Everything has to come down to competition with other festivals. I still feel like everyone's so upset because everyone had super high expectations. After being told Neil and Roger would be on the farm from people who claimed it was almost certain everyone on here was expecting the moon. It may not be the best lineup Bonnaroo has ever seen in some people's eyes (I think it's an awesome lineup, for the record) but it's still going to be an awesome weekend of music for everyone who goes.
Based on all the negativity in the posts on here one would think that the whole weekend will suck and there is no good acts.
Do you work for Bonnaroo or something? They suggested several big acts would be there when they knew they wouldnt. Bonnaroo's own twitter probably reaches a bigger audience than CoS or Inforoo.
No I don't work for Bonnaroo. I'm a 23 year old music fan from New York. I appreciate all the amazing music that Bonnaroo has turned me onto in the past 5 years. Sorry if I don't automatically jump on the "this lineup sucks" bandwagon because some huge name acts aren't in the top 2 slots of the bill.
Posting lyrics and album names to bands that were rumored for Bonnaroo already (Stones and Furthur were both rumored at certain points) is not the suggesting that several big acts would be there. If you read all of those tweets and really expected to see Furthur, Bob Dylan, Rolling Stones, The Who, and Jay-Z all on the farm this year then you only have yourself to blame. I saw those tweets and felt that they had one or two of those acts and they did. Jay-Z was on the bill.
So if Bonnaroo's own twitter reaches a bigger audience then how come the only people complaining about those tweets are the people complaining on inforoo? Why isn't there more of a public outcry on other websites or forums condeming Superfly for lying to everyone? Simple. They didn't lie. There was no promise made. It was a simple tweet to play on the rumors that existed and mention some big name acts.
Also, here's the one of the last tweets when "teasing" people with allusions:
Okay I'm sorry. I'll stop being a jokerman. I'll quit playing games with your heart. Though I could go further - or is it farther?
Seems to imply they weren't being serious. Even tho it includes a few allusions to bands it still sounds like they weren't really implying those bands would be playing.
whether you got angry when the lineup dropped or not, the way they did it brought a LOT of buzz and a lot of anticipation. its marketing at its finest. you might argue that they have some p.r. work to do to appease those who were disappointed by neil/waters/etc not being there, but also in their defense, and i might be wrong on this, but none of their tweets hinted at neil or waters and none of the other people listed were rumored other than jay z.
as for the large portion of us who are completely stoked for the lineup and have explored it fully like we do every year instead of just condemning it, we couldnt be more excited. my two roo buddies (one i went to 06 and 07 with, the other i went to 08 and 09 with) are floored about how many great bands they want to see this year. its unfortunate that not every one is happy, but a lot of the blame for this "let down" can be put on Inforoo if you really think about it.

No matter how many times we say it, people are still going to claim we're disappointed because of the lack of Neil and Waters. While Neil is one of the big reasons I'm not happy about it, there's plenty of other things as well.

It's becoming common wisdom that NY and RW, or "inforoo rumors" in general are the reason people don't like the lineup. There's really no point in arguing with them, nodepression, because people who keep saying this will never believe anything else at this point.

Perfectly said. I for one don't understand what the fuss is either. I kind of understand if your a big jam-band head, cause you guys didn't get much this year round, but you guys did get two Phish sets last year. I think for those that appreciate different forms of music, if you get involved with this lineup, and research the bands, as I have religiously been doing since the lineup came out. You will find that this lineup is pretty stacked. A bunch of fun acts. Props to jakicker.
Oh and I LOVED the way they released the lineup. One by one all day long. Hope they do that from now on. For me it did exactly what it was intended to do. Give us time to get to know a little about each band. I know that I was punching a new bands name into Wiki every six minutes on Tuesday Feb 9th.

Saw that Elizabeth Cook put Bonaroo on her myspace. I hear her now and then going to work on her radio show. I am looking forward to hear her perform at Roo.

one thing. those top 4 are big name bands. it may have been the most expensive top 4 ever for them to book. maybe that explains the lack other big names.

I don't necessarily think it's ONLY because Neil and Roger aren't on the lineup. I do think that the people who claimed to have sources tell them they would be on the farm helped to raise the expectation level of all the people on here. The high expectations led to everyone hoping their favorite bands would be there (My Morning Jacket, Pavement, Arcade Fire, etc.).
I think the Neil/Roger thing is ONE reason many people are upset. I think it's a pretty big reason and that it led to extreme amounts of hype and excitement. There's also the lack of jam bands, the way they released the lineup, the delaying/disappearance of "more surprises", and the fact that Kings of Leon are number 2 on the lineup.
This, among a few other things (depending on the person) are what led to a lot of negativity. I get it.
I'm a firm believer that adding ONE MORE huge name act wouldn't make this lineup "awesome" for everyone. I don't think one act can change the overall look of the lineup. I do, however, think this is a pretty strong lineup and a lot of people don't give credit to all the amazing bands that are on it.

Very good point. I was just thinking about that myself about twenty minutes ago. I have a hard time talking my friends into roo every year. In 08 i got three to come, and last year I just got my girlfriend to go. This year it looks like I might be alone, or it might be my biggest year yet cause I have about ten people on the fence. Most of my friends are just into what's well-known. So the undercard of Roo never is a draw for them (Which kills me, it's the best part). One of my friends last night, said he felt like he already missed the best year, which in his opinion was 08. I think this year though, when you compare the acts to how popular/well-known they are, it matches up with any other. Dave is one of my generation's favorite bands, and has always been big. Kings are huge right now. Stevie Wonder is a legend. Jay Z, Jack Black, Anyone who grew up in the 90's knows Weezer. Jack White, Nas, Phoenix, and Norah Jones. All could be considered mainstream. I bet that's expensive.

Oh I have absolutely no doubt that you'll all still watch it. It's at bonnaroo after all so it can't be bad. Everything the band has done the past 15 years doesn't matter at all, it's at bonnaroo.

dude your negativity is so extreme. take a step back and chill. nobody said "it's at bonnaroo after all so it can't be bad". You're just interpreting people's comments so that they sound ridiculous and blowing them out of proportion.

he just looks like an idiot. i know i had complaints at first and still have some reservations about the lineup. point blank it's their weakest lineup. but it is still good lineup and it will still be a great time and i'm not going to continue to bitch about it. if i felt that strongly about it, i would a) not go b) go somehere else. i wouldn't be here wasting my time bitching on a message board about it.
I'm calling bullquack on this one. The lineup comes out in a couple and weeks and you have about ten solid confirmations at best, and all small names to boot. Us great folks at the coachella board did our homework and we had basically the whole lineup confirmed by december.
This is not me just drinking haterade, this is truth. You dirty hippie stragglers need to clean up your act. Take a jog around the park, take a bath, and cut those offensive dreads off and get yourselves a nice crewcut or something. Oh and stop wearing Grateful Dead memorabila every quacking place you go. This isn't 1970 anymore. Again, I'm not hating, just giving some constructive criticism. In other words, you draft dodgers need to start actually contributing something to society instead of lighting up another quacking bong. Bonnaroo is on a crooked path whereas Coachella is on the straight and narrow. The right path.
I think he's just glad that there are complaints on the board so he can continue his hate for Bonnaroo and Inforoo. He called inforoo a joke yet continues to come here often.
that's true. but how much do you want to bet that we still show up to watch at least some of their set?
Count me in, especially if the schedule looks like your mock thread. No way I would stay for the whole thing unless they went heavily old-school, but if I catch say it ain't so it could potentially be one of my fav of the weekend.
Also, I think with this being a phish-heavy board, people don't account for the fact enough that there are lots of DMB fans that regularly attend bonnaroo that like them for all the right reasons, much unlike all the frat bros everyone fears coming. As a senior at UK right now and someone who liked DMB way before knowing anything about frats, I have been stunned at how popular DMB is among the community considering the other crap they listen to. So I don't think DMB will draw much of a crowd that wouldn't regularly go to bonnaroo, but their show will still be full of regular bonnaroo attendees.
As for KOL + Jay-Z I think we could see some different faces and, unfortunately, attitudes. But I think without another MTV friendly act being there, KOL wouldn't be enough to draw those people and would have a normal show, like dave, with a lot of people who have seen them at past roos. The problem is a normal KOL show should be pre-headling.
I emailed Bonnaroo asking about artist additions and just got the generic response, "Artist additions will be made in the upcoming weeks on our website."
Again, if KOL can sell out arenas across the country/have one of the top selling albums of 2009 and has headlined Lollapalooza before why can't they headline Bonnaroo?
-When I Hear My Name -Dead Leaves and the Dirty Ground -Blue Orchid -Passive Manipulation -Red Rain -Death Letter -My Doorbell -Hotel Yorba -Same Boy You've Always Known -Lovesick -Little Ghost -We're Going to Be Friends -The Hardest Button to Button -Black Math -The Nurse -I Just Don't Know What to Do With Myself
Encore: -Ball and Biscuit -Seven Nation Army -Screwdriver

Yea they were Lolla's 6th headliner, which means they were going against the top billed act, Depeche Mode. Somehow since August they've gone from a 6 to a 2.

I don't think anything really changed with KOL. Capps ( or someone from Superfly) said in an interview that they and the band made the decision for KOL to wait til this year to headline instead of playing last year. I think KOL headlining was the plan for a while, not like something changed since they headlined Lolla. They may have been the 6th headliner at Lolla but they have also headlined plenty of other big festivals that people are always boasting about.
In 2008, they headlined the Glastonbury Music Festival, and in 2009, the band headlined a number of music festivals, including Reading & Leeds, Rock Werchter, Oxegen, T In The Park, Gurtenfestival and Open'er Festival in Europe, along with Sasquatch, Lollapalooza, and Austin City Limits in the United States.
I'm just hoping that this is Bonnaroo's way of starting to "promote" bands to headliner and next year we will see MMJ moving up to headline the What stage.

You know what I love about this message board? I started this thread to see if anyone knew when we get some more artist announcements, and four pages of arguments later...we still know nothing. Priceless.

lol @ this thread....
Someone said this already I think, but I remember last year first additions coming sometime mid-March. And I'm pretty sure they came steadily a few at a time every few weeks or so, up until around the time the tickets ship (Mayish). I could be remembering things totally wrong, but that's all I got for ya.
