I was at the Lexington show. Great set. Beautiful sound in an old gym that was only half full due to the Sun nite, high tix price & no alcohol served. Jim played posessed. He said it felt cool to be able to pick back up right where you left off without missing a beat. They sounded so loose and happy to be back. Jim talked about his college days at UK in the dorms where he penned Butch Cassidy... talked about Lexington's wealth of ghosts and our need to riot regardless whether our basketball team wins or loses a championship. Got to cook for the band & meet everyone & their families. Such an amazing day. One I will never forget.
That's pretty much every MMJ song I'd want to here at bonnaroo
That set + Phone Went West would be bliss.
Phone Went West was actually in the encore but got cut due to time restrictions. (source MMJ forum)
At Roo we will get more than just 2 new songs. I mean, they were playing 3 new songs a night back in 2010, and as ITM referenced they said they weren't going heavy on the new stuff till May--probably when Circuital is released.

I'm sure we'll probably get a decent bit of Circuital at roo... but Phone Went West is my favorite live MMJ jam, and I'm really hoping we get it this year, because I understand there is not time for everything.

That would have been awesome! Yeah, those stories were rather chilling for someone who just graduated from UK and really got into MMJ during their college years. I can't believe I had no idea he went to UK till this past week.
Setlist for Sunday night's show in Lexington has been posted. This is the first show of 2011:
1. Mahgeetah 2. Anytime 3. Off The Record 4. Evil Urges 5. I’m Amazed 6. The Way That He Sings 7. Gideon 8. Circuital 9. Golden 10. Lowdown 11. Dondante 12. Butch Cassidy 13. Wonderful (The Way I Feel) 14. Lay Low 15. What A Wonderful Man 16. Dancefloors 17. Smokin From Shootin 18. (end of) Run Thru 19. Touch Me I'm Going To Scream Pt.2 ----------- 20. Wordless Chorus 21. Touch Me I'm Going To Scream Pt.1 22. Highly Suspicious 23. One Big Holiday
I'm pretty surprised they didn't play more of Circuital. However, I love they played Butch Cassidy. That song is beautiful live.
First four songs were an amazing way to kick off the show. I wish I had taken a look at what time they started. I know ben sollee started right around 7 and couldn't have lasted more than an hour. Pretty sure it was around 11ish when the show ended?

Yeah, they sure came out smokin'. I was hoping for a Magheetah and got it right off the bat! Ben played several with them and added alot to the mix. It was kinda like having like having Andrew Bird up there. They played from 8- 10:45. Blew my mind that the place was only half full after seeing them at the sold out KFC center months ago. Memorial Hall holds 6,000, KFC is like 24,000. Student run concert committee shoulda booked it on a Saturday in a venue with booze, for less than $50 a ticket. No one made the hour drive from Louisville, I guess.

^ Yeah I saw the packed Halloween show at KFC and kept telling my friends the other night I couldn't believe how few people were there in Lex. It was the closest I've ever been to MMJ and I was one of the farthest back on the floor for awhile! It was probably due to poor promotion outside of student tickets, which I don't think sold very well. They should have dropped the GA price or something.

I started listening and then I realized Circuital is already one too many songs to know before the album comes out. I want to absorb the album as a whole.
This is the first message board I've ever been on, the only reason I joined is because I love Bonnaroo and wanted to read and talk about it all year long.
Since I read about 'Holdin On To Black Metal' I've been dying to hear it just out of shear curiosity because of the name. Great f'n tune. I really like the vibe they are sending out with everything I've heard from Circuital.
Is there anything else to hear besides Circuital? I heard that Holding On To Black Metal is being released tomorrow? What else is there, just live stuff?
I didn't listen to MMJ at all before the lineup was released this year...they are now probably my #1 must see band.

Did anyone see the link someone posted in the comments under the song?? It sounds like a rip-off of an obscure Thai pop song. Just saying. It's almost identical.

On a brighter note... they just released another show date in Louisville at the intimate, gorgeous Palace Theater, May 31st. I just saw WSP there twice and it is a perfect venue, if anyone is contemplating a road trip. Tickets will be gone in a flash!

Jim himself mentioned that exact soul album as an influence in Spin magazine this month. He's just paying homage, not ripping off...

This if from someone in the know on the MMJ forum:
For those wondering about the Siamese Soul connection. Yes, there's a connection and the band credits the original song in the liner notes. They look at it almost like they sampled the riff, but they are actually playing it all.
