If you CAN get two I definitely would. But if you have to choose then I'd definitely go PS4 (and I say this as a long time X-Box fanboy)
Well, I wouldn't need to choose, as I already own an Xbox One.
The PS3, PS Vita and accompanying games would amount to a little over $160 in Gamestop credit (about $130 in cash). Add a bit of textbook sellback money, and it comes closer to $200(and if I threw in some of our old Wii games it'd be even more).
So what would be a $600 purchase (assuming I get the PS4, an Xbox One Elite controller, and a headset) would be a $400 one.
And I'd probably buy the headset with my own money.
I don't see too terribly much reason to have both XBO and PS4, unless you absolutely want to play everything. XBox may have more in terms of big exclusive games, but the seller for me was Bloodborne for PS4. Also, personally, I'm not getting rid of my PS3 until PS4 is at least backwards compatible to PS3 (if ever), but it's too good of a media hub for me to get rid of just yet. Also, all the games I've dl'd for PS3 (PS1 Classics, mostly) makes it hard for me to want to get rid of.
But, yes, PS4 is worth getting. I wasn't really into gaming in most recent years too much, but in the year I've had my PS4 I've tried and bought more games than in any other year in the last decade at least.
I'm thinking of trading in my PS3 (and games) to get credit towards that, a X1 Elite, and a headset.
You should look at the games available right now, if there are at least five games only available on PS4 that you care about, then absolutely.
Do you have a decent PC? If so I would say absolutely not, almost everything on PS4 is on PC, with better prices/performance, and without having online locked behind a paywall.
I'd think twice about selling your PS3 though, are you sure you wouldn't want to play anything on it ever again? I've used mine way more that my PS4 since buying it.
For me personally, I'd say the PS4 isn't worth it, and won't be until at least 2018ish, I've been thoroughly disappointed with the software lineup.

1. No, I don't have a decent PC. I have a Surface and a four-year old laptop that wheezes when I try to open Chrome.
2. Yes, I'e pretty much played through everything on my PS3. It has no real to me.

Slow clap for the CEO of Activision who responded to a question about the high number of dislikes for Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare's trailer by basically saying that people keep buying it so who gives a shit.

I'd say definitely do it. The ps4 game lineup now is pretty stellar, and the graphics are a big upgrade. Plus you'll at least get a decent amount for your ps3....a year from now it'll be worth peanuts.
If you get the ps4 definitely check out: Uncharted 4, Metal Gear Solid 5, Batman Arkham Knight, Until Dawn, Star Wars Battlefront, and COD Advanced Warfare (or BO3)
Plus there are some great games coming, like the new Hitman, the rumored Last of Us 2, Doom, Final Fantasy 15, the rumored Crash Bandicoot reboot and Tekken 7
microsoft about to lay the hammer down tomorrow at e3. Sony going to show a bunch of booty VR.
LOL. Complete opposite. Sony came out with probably the greatest E3 presentation ever. Microsoft was all about "combining PC and console" (yawn).
Feeling better than ever on my decision to leave Microsoft behind and hop on the Sony train.
okay.... But I don't think so here's why. I saw a lot of nice cg trailers from Sony. Only one release date for anything this year and horizon not til 2017. the one coming this year is the last guardian... A game we saw at e3 2009 for PS3 lol gtfo. Wouldnt count on playing any of those others til at least 2018 or later based off Sony track record this gen and all their delays on first party triple a's. Plus all those games shown are being played on a ps neo which is practically alrdy outdated before its release due to the fact that ms basically announced Scorpio and said its the most powerful console ever And will do 4k native gaming while the ps4 neo or 4k will only stream 4k video and upscale games to 4k.
All the cross buy is genius if you think about it. Microsoft and Sony make money on software sales not hardware. By m$ releasing games on windows 10 they have effectively added 400million (win10) possible new customers to play their games and have a more global appeal. Xbox also now has cross party with steam players and messaging. Windows 10 (PC) is Xbox gaming. It's all one now under windows 10 UWP.
I had almost thought about selling my Xbox One. The only reason I am keeping it is possibly replaying Dark Souls in the future but even it hasn't been remastered (just on a better console finally to stop lag). It is collecting dust.
The new Halo was a letdown to me and their exclusive games have little to no interest for me. The 4K sounds great, though.
I am looking forward to the new Until Dawn and new Zelda (2017). Not much else for 2016... which is fine because I need to catch up on a few games. The Last Guardian does show great promise, too.
Sony's was pretty terrible, mostly prerendered trailers for games that would be late 2017 at best, mostly 2018 titles. Plus the best playstation exclusives (Yakuza 0, Persona 5, Nier: Automata, Gravity Rush 2, Dragon Quest Builders) that are coming soon (late 2016/early 2017) weren't even shown. I wish Sony of America would stop trying to hide the fact that they are a Japanese company.

Pretty good e3 overall though, Besides the good stuff upcoming on playstation (Yakuza 0, Persona 5, Nier: Automata, Gravity Rush 2, Dragon Quest Builders, Last Guardian), Nintendo showed off Zelda: Breath of the Wild, which looks pretty damn cool. 3DS has a pretty great list of upcoming games, (Monster Hunter Generation, 7th Dragon III, Yo-kai Watch 2, Dragon Quest VII, Shin Megami Tensei IV: Apocalypse, Pokemon Sun/Moon). Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE comies out in less than a week too. I'm going to a very happy, but very busy gamer for a while.

I thought Sony had the best conference. No bullshit, just games.
I like that they just showed games, my issue was that they ignored a lot of great upcoming playstation exclusive games that are coming soon in favor of games that are well over a year away from launch. I mean they showed off shovelware like a lego game, but not Gravity Rush 2, a game made by Japan Studio, one of Sony's first party studios.

Heathen! The Lego games aren't even close to shovelware.

I've played the Lego games myself, they can have their charm, but they are generally very simple, basic games based on licensed properties. You replay events of whatever property they are based on. In Lego Star Wars, you replay the events of the movies, in Lego Avengers, you replay the events of those movies. They generally have a ton of playable characters, but they are mostly palate swaps of each other. I'm not saying the Lego games are complete trash or that you shouldn't like them, but they are shovelware.
My point still stands, Sony of America ignored a ton of great upcoming playstation exclusive games that are coming out soon in favor of games that are more that a year away from launch.
