Fallout New Vegas is definitely worth the $5 on the Steam sale. If you enjoyed Fallout 3, I would go for it. Fallout 3 holds a special place in my gaming heart for it's story, but Vegas does not fall short at all on the game play or story.
To add to this thread, I'm currently playing The Last of Us on the PS3 by Naughty Dog (Uncharted, Jak and Daxter..) and I just completely become emerged in this game every time I turn it on to play. The story, the graphics, the voice acting, the mechanics, it makes the experience oh so rich. It also has some of the most tense and intense gaming moments I've experienced in awhile out of a console game. Beyond satisfied with that title thus far.

For five bucks, absolutely. I only played it on 360, and it was buggy as hell (on occasion, game-breaking-ly so)... I imagine it has to be better on the PC with the opportunity for mods and the like. The game itself isn't as good as Fallout3; the gameplay is more or less the same, it is a bit more difficult (that's a positive), but the story is pretty weak in my opinion, and the faction system isn't pulled off as well as you would hope. That said, it's incredibly fun and a great way to get lost in a game for hours, if you let it happen.
Edit: also, the graphic design of the game isn't nearly as cool as that of Fallout 3... even technically, the Fallout 3 graphics stand out really well. Being an Obsidian developed game, it was the fault of their usual rush job, if I had to guess.
New Vegas and Fallout 3 are both worth way more than $5. At least buy the regular game(s) for $2.50 a piece if you're not sold on buying it plus all the DLC for the $5 each. I've lost a lot of time to both of them.
Keep in mind, you'll have to edit a file (maybe more) to get Fallout 3 to work on Windows 7.

So yeah, I forgot to get it this morning before work, and the sale ends at 1pm. I will put it in the queue for next time though since every sale on Steam comes around again. I still need to finish Mass Effect and Dragon Age anyway.
You can still buy it via the website or phone app and download it whenever you get home.
Work shuts down Steam altogether. They are very picky about "gaming" websites. Like I said, I can just get it next time. They also tend to repeat Summer Sale stuff at the end, so I will keep a lookout for it.

Yea, I have Arkham City on Xbox and was thinking of picking up Arkham Asylum on Steam for $5. Haven't played that yet. And using the USB Xbox controller on the PC is awesome.

I really need to purchase one. I may have to move it up the list of my gaming related expenses.

I played the shit out of Skyrim (better than Oblivion in many, many ways), but haven't checked into any of the DLC. If there's something that exists that is as big as Shivering Isles was, then I'd be interested. But, if it's just a bunch of little updates and few expanded/new areas, I'll pass.

Fallout 3 and Fallout: New Vegas have been the sole reasons I haven't gone crazy being unemployed the last 6 months. I haven't gotten into Skyrim yet cause it scares me that I'll never stop playing it.

You will get addicted. At one point I started looking at the world differently and it became a little scary. But truthfully its better in your situation now then when ya got the world to deal with in the morning.

Yeah, I mean if I could pay my rent in bottle caps it'd be just fine.

If you like the 16-bit Zelda style RPGs, have a PS3, and want one that is a little more difficult with more puzzles and with a darker story, I definitely recommend checking out Alundra, a PS1 classic on the PSN Store. For many years I called it my favorite game.
