You all are really selling me on RDR2 and the ultimate edition is on sale on PSN for $35. love a slow paced game
RDR 2 is amazing. Cannot recommend it enough if you are fine with slower paced gaming. You get used to it....it's just jarring if you go from like GTA or Assassins Creed and hop right into this. It's also kind of a joke about how slow the first couple of tutorial missions go because you're learning how to play and also getting a lot of dialogue/exposition from characters to set things up. But I still enjoy it.
It really is enjoyable and as part of my replay I'm trying to not move on from one chapter to the next before experiencing everything that you can in the current chapter. Basically with most chapter changes the whole group moves locations (as the map expands through gameplay) and there are certain small side missions or things you can get that are no longer available once you move to the next chapter as time passes/history progresses.
It just really feels like a living world at times. You can go do missions but if you just ride around and interact with folks you can find hidden things, unique interactions that lead to profit or the law chasing you, and overall it's just super complex with all the things you can do. I would spend hours just hunting animals and making a profit or donating it to my camp. One of the more fun things you can do in single player is get around the campfire when the other people in your group are having a party and playing music/getting drunk. I've spent hours just playing poker in a saloon.
And that's just single player. Online is fun, too, but has lost some of it's appeal if you've played it a ton. Though if any of you are on Playstation we should set up a posse at some point and do some group missions together or go around towns roughing up the griefers.

One of my favorite parts of RDR 2 was just sitting down and listening to the characters at camp talk. You learn so much of their backgrounds, especially of the women characters who don't play as big of roles (outside of Sadie).
Single camera with no cuts is the single coolest gimmick in AAA gaming, why has nobody but Santa Monica tried it? GOW:R in the first hour is absolutely excellent and I'm incredibly excited to live in this world for the next few weeks.

Cause it sounds incredibly expensive and complex to do

This all sounds exactly my speed when it comes to games, thanks for the rec! I love games where you can just dick around, take your time, and really immerse yourself in the minutia of the world without feeling forced to complete whatever mission the main game is pushing you towards. Last game I could really get comfy with was Breath of the Wild and it seems like RDR2 has what that game was (purposely) missing imo, namely more interactive moments with NPCs.
Otherwise I'm playing FF7 for the first time and loving it

didn't know this thread existed! I'm replaying Portal on my switch and really enjoying it. I know it's in the masterpiece class basically, so this might be a given, but is the medium done giving us games like this?? Fresh fun mechanics with compelling worlds.

anyway yawn I feel old
welcome! Portal is such an incredible game. I think Zelda Tears of the Kingdom has a potential to be a real game changer but as far as out of the blue masterpieces from western developers, I don't see any coming anytime soon. what are some of your other favorite games games?
may be a little niche but i really hope we get Paper Mario TTYD on the switch in some form eventually. its so annoying having to dig out my GC and buying an expensive adapter to play it on a 4k tv without it looking awful

I've actually been trying to figure that out! Some highlights from the last few years of play:
The TALOS Principle Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice Super Mario Odyssey Trackmania (various games) What Remains of Edith Finch Firewatch Kingdoms of Amalaur: Reckoning
Historically I've had a fun time socially gaming but it's just hard to find time

I can't remember if I posted about it here, but a few months ago I played both Portal games back to back, and goddamn the second is an absolutely perfect sequel. The first is more or less just a really cool proof of concept, but is like two hours long your first play through. The second just ups the ante in every single way, including adding possibly the most iconic voice acting in video game history with a Cave Johnson. Just spectacular.

Fun fact: The National song "Exile Vilify," which is in Portal 2, was the first song I ever taught myself to play on piano.
Do you want to dance while also thinking about all the ways you've failed as a human?

Last night's trivia listing bonus was movies based on video games. I think we managed like 21. You had to know the subtitle to get credit for RE sequels.
