I got a switch for Christmas and I'm excited to use it but a little intimidated TBH. I haven't owned a video game device outright since I shared one with my brother in middle school / high school.
I got it because I got hooked on a friend's game called Donut Country where you make things fall into holes and that's pretty much the game. Apparently there's a whole genre of "chill video games" out there that are fun and not stressful or need a lifetime's worth of video game skills (I really want to play Hades but my fingers cannot step up).
I'm not an Animal Crossing girl, but anyone else have "Chill Game" recs? My friend who gave it to me thought Spiritfarer would be good (that's how the death convo came up). Any other recs would be sweet!
hmmm i dont really play a ton of “chill games” but some of my recommendations for someone who doesnt play a lot of video games would be:
-Super Mario 3D All Stars -Kirby & The Forgotten Land -Undertale -Legend of Zelda: Links Awakening -Unpacking
If you subscribe to nintendo switch online for $20 a year you also get access to a bunch of NES and SNES games. and if you choose the expansion pak plan which is $50 a year that also includes a bunch of Sega Genesis and Nintendo 64 games

Spiritfarer is a lovely choice, but bring the tissues; the story hits HARD.
I’ve never played it, but by all accounts Stardew Valley is the ultimate chill video game. Have also heard great things about A Short Hike, Unpacking, and the recently released Lil Gator Game.
Adjacent to chill games, “walking simulators” are great games to experience gripping stories through low stakes play. Based on your LGBT background, I think you’d love Gone Home. Others in the genre I love include What Remains of Edith Finch (save some tissues), Tacoma, and Firewatch.
Have fun! Gaming is more accessible and exciting than ever. The Switch is the best device for indie play. Enjoy discovering the treasure trove of games waiting for you!
I love include What Remains of Edith Finch (save some tissues)
I recently bought this on sale after seeing it on a few "best ps4 games of all time" lists. I have tried to prepare my emotions accordingly. Starting it after I finish AC:Unity (also on sale).

That will be a great play after Assassin’s Creed: short, sweet, and crushingly beautiful.

Yoshi Crafted Island was super cute and Luigi’s Haunted Mansion 2 was cute too. Not too challenging. Yoshi def more chill. But that’s all i got off top of my head
Just got a PS5 for my kid but I'm still on my xbox one tip cuz I cant stop playing Cold War multiplayer for whatever reason. He got Stray, some awful sonic game, and God of War Ragnarok but none of them rly hitting with me... The kid loves Stray tho. Rly don't know whats good but I'll eventually spring for another COD game.

I buy all of the COD's like the degenerate that I am. It's an unpopular opinion, but cold wars been my favorite for the last like, decade.

Talking about Skyrim in another thread got me itching for a new playthrough with new mods. I've always assembled my own modlists but decided to try a Wabbajack modpack for the first time.
Clean Skyrim install = 12gb, the Tempus Maledictum modpack = 200gb, downloading right now lfg. Includes LotD as well which I don't want to play without mod is incredible.

I've been meaning to try wabbajack modlists, especially Lost Legacy because it gets *juuuuuuuuuust* close enough to my normal modlist
and I also don't wanna rebuild my old modlist completely from scratch

I too cannot play without LotD
i'll let you know how it goes with wabbajack. i started the download yesterday evening and it took all night and yesterday evening just to download Tempus Maledictum. It's installing now which is also taking a while, unfortunately I have somewhere to be this afternoon, was really hoping to play a little before i left.
but if it works it'll be crazy that i can have over a thousand mods loaded on a stable build. i typically don't mod that hard.

Beat the first last of us during a replay last night. Just in time for the show. Had beaten it before but wanted to start from scratch to refresh for the show.
Doing some DLC now then onto the sequel, which I got a decent chunk into but never finished. Excited about that.
I've been playing Skyrim for years on PS4. Always vanilla as it's still entertaining enough for me, and I don't know shit about mods. Just bought it for the Switch as well, and I'm excited to start a new play through. Graphics are better on the Switch, but the controls aren't as effortless yet.
I love Stardew Valley for chill games, I have it for both of my systems as well.

Skyrim/Wabbajack/Tempus Maledictum modpack update: after playing this weekend and some this week, short version is it's AWESOME. it's hard to even know what all these mods are doing, so it's kind of like playing a new-ish to me game. the unknown aspect of all the mods is what prevented me from trying a wabbajack modpack before, but it turns out the discovering by playing process is super fun. also the creator has an extremely active discord, typically if i have a question i can just do a search in there and somebody else has already asked it.
Graphically it's pretty stunning. great use of ENB and dyndolod and texture overhauls. and i'm pretty impressed that wabbajack installs dyndolod for you, not that it's hard to install dyndolod yourself but it's a very specific process with specific steps, pretty cool that all of that is automated. and i can't play without dyndolod now, being able to see the lights of a city in the distance is just incredible to me. anyway as i noted the download took forever, but the install couldn't have gone any smoother.
of course the individual choices any graphics mod makes are subjective, but i think this did a good job of maintaining the feel of skyrim while also injecting more detail, color, and a touch of vibrancy. and the NPCs and player character all look fantastic. i'm running a 3080, frame rates are great.
i still haven't been to all the cities yet, it's been fun seeing how different they all are. i've used city mods before, but not whatever mods this pack uses.
there is a mod that amps up the difficulty of dragons but i turned all that down in the MCM, i'm not personally looking for a super hard dragon slaying experience. outside of dragons combat is harder, but not punishingly so. sneak is nerfed big time, which is fine it is notoriously super OP. still i'm playing the classic sneak archer and enjoying it.
loving ordinator, i've played with less extensive perk overhauls before and enjoyed them, i thought ordinator would be too complex but i see the wisdom in it now. the modpack gives you an additional perk point every 5 levels, which feels reasonably balanced to me, and you can also trade dragon souls for perk points. i haven't felt the need to do that yet but i might once i get into higher levels.
i will say that with all the new weapons and armor, leveling smithing has been incredibly easy. when i hit a town i buy up all the iron/steel/leather/leather strips, then just spam the most valuable item i can, sell back to the vendor to get my money back. i'm level 20 and have hit 60 in smithing without really grinding that hard.
and so far the game has run flawlessly, haven't had a single crash yet. if there are bugs i haven't noticed them.
anyway big fan, looking forward to many more hours with Tempus Maledictum.

New game on Game Pass called Hi-Fi Rush that totally rips, it's a character action game like a Devil May Cry or Bayonetta, but also a rhythm game so attacking on beat does more damage. You play a dude who gets his heart replaced by an iPod and try to escape from a dystopian factory with the help of an adorable robot cat named 808. It's got a gorgeous, Saturday morning cartoon art style, and the first boss battle is set to a Nine Inch Nails song.

Not available for PS5? Boooooo
Yeah it's a Microsoft game, hence the Day 1 Game Pass drop. Runs great on PC though
metroid prime remaster looks so nice compared to the original. dual stick controls also improve the experience tenfold.
i absolutely love the game voucher system they have now too. gonna use one on Kirby, one on Zelda, one on the Bayonetta spinoff and save the last one for another game reveal
