I had a great time, with the exception of the ticket scare that Sang mentioned earlier. I was about to cry and Adam was about to burn that motherfucker down.
It all worked out though.
I never had any problems with cops or security and I was openly eating mushrooms and smoking, also never had any problems being searched in the line and I smuggled in tequila on two of the days (one of them being by accident b/c I forgot that it was in my bag and just so happened to find it while waiting for a show to start) perhaps I just got lucky? IDK.
I got great spots for MMJ, The Flaming Lips, and The Black Keys (about three rows back front and center) The trick to that is to just get there way early and post up. I missed a couple of shows that I wanted to see just so I could get a good spot for those shows, but I don't regret it.
All in all great weekend!! I will definitely do it again next year.
Also, next year I'm going to make a huge sign that says "THROW YOUR FUCKING TRASH IN A TRASH CAN!" b/c My God! People were just throwing that stuff on the ground. It kinda sucked to be dancing and nearly fall over b/c you jumped on a beer can or plastic bottle. People who litter suck.

i agree. the trash was awful. but it's like that everywhere. people are pigs.
*sigh* before I give a proper review....you guys do realize NO NO WORD!!! are illegal? Just because its a festival does not mean you can just freely smoke when you want. If you got busted then you were probably being a dumbass about it. Sitting on a towel minding your business doesnt put you above the law. And FTR I dont think I saw one show that there wasnt a constant cloud of smoke around me.
EDIT: Apparently Im beating a dead horse with this.
I understand drugs are illegal........drugs don't make or break a festival for me. The crowd was way too big for the venue and not a particularly friendly crowd at that. It is easier to wade through 80,000 people at bonnaroo than 35,000 at hangout. I'm not positive but mulberry mountain seems to be a larger venue than the hangout beach and if I'm not mistaken wakarusa cap their tickets under 20,000. I also found glass on the beach several times by the end of the first night and there were people walking around barefoot. I thought during the day the festival was pretty cool, but as the day progressed and drunks woke up from their hangover and began piling in and it just wasn't as fun. I also don't understand why they couldn't hire private security for this fest as opposed to letting the police roam about freely inside. I didn't get arrested and wasn't even doing anything illegal by day sunday, but i felt a bit intimidated by the police presence. I think this fest has a lot of potential but they have to change a lot of things. When they do maybe I'll put some money back into it, but as it stands I will put my money into something that seems to care a little more about the patrons who attend it.
Festival dates are May 18-20th 2012- go ahead and book a condo. I know these dates because my condo (island winds east, overlooking mainstage FTW) had a lil poster saying what the dates were and to go ahead and book for next year while you can.
Did anyone else hear these were the dates for 2012?
Nice Kate Upton avatar, Juggs. I was surprised by the amount of people that can drink so much in that heat. But yeah, all the cans/trash on the beach was bad, but I expected it to be that way. Trash / recycling bins were not that far from anywhere on the beach. I'm just glad they cleaned it overnight.
well for what its worth even though we got thrown in jail for 2 joints, id still like to go back.
i didnt know alabama had some ancient redneck outdated marijuana laws. believe me, if i knew i would get thrown in a holding cell w 15 other guys till 8:30 in the morning for smoking a joint. i would have been a little less comfortable. Thats all, we just got comfortable in our travels. and for whats its worth we are low key. dumstafunk show we were right in middle of group at a rocking show, and when cops grabbed us, me and the lady were sitting on a blanket during panic.
but hey thats their redneck ways. throw a hippie in jail. i should have know better. we went back sun and saw everyone partying like they should at a fest and we were so jealous lol. we giggled all day and night after our square meal for luch. we were so paranoid we smoked in the porta potties till paul simon came on lol!!
fest was great!! i didnt think crowds were too bad. black keys was packed but looking at schedule you knew it was gonna be. yeah last years crowds was nice, but that was a third of what it was this year. plus they lost money w only 15k.
people complaining about porta potties? they are probably the same people that stand in line at deercreek indiana bathrooms. why does everyone stand in line for the one right in front!!! walk back a little!! there are so many more. some people really must be dumb. yeah i went to jail for smoking a joint but i didnt wait ONCE to piss.
music was great weather was great! it only gonna get better.
felt bad for shuttle people. first outside lands was nuts like that
the ol lady dont wanna go back, her first time being arrested. i'm down w it. we got a line up on condo .4 miles away and i wanna go back. i explained that they way we travel, and carry, and party...... we got lucky. she said i can go without her next year. condo and all those bikinis, yeah she will be w me.
i dont show any disrespect to anyone that dont deserve it. alabama folk are great. their idiot law enforcement is comical. my lady says they treated me like that cause im a long haired half mexican. i said they are too dumb to do my job and i dont want their crappy job so they cant say "they are talking all our jobs" lol. she thinks everyone is bigots, some are, but ill never use that as an excuse.
ill be back to the hangout for the third years straight. went to the first 3 bonnaroos also. hope hangout dont cheese out like that.

you are out of your mind if you think the crowds were harder to get through than roo crowds. sure it was slow walking sometimes, but nowhere near the clusterfuck that roo is. everything about this fest was more comfortable than roo.

On a brighter note, did any of y'all get a free high five from me after the Black Keys show? I was in the back near the yellow tent on the beach side. I got many a high five, elbow bump, smile, and even a couple ass slaps:).

All in all, pros outweighed cons at the hangout!
Will say I had mixed feelings about it after Sunday. But, given time to reflect and get over myself, I had a blast.
Pros: First thing MUSIC KICKED @ss! This is a music festival and atop everything that is what I come for, the MUSIC!!! My god everyone killed it who played, the line up was stellar, I could go on about the tunes!
2nd: Amenities were killer. I do feel for people who were 1 mile + from the festival grounds. Shuttle setup seemed real unorganized. We were with-in walking distance however and it is n amazing feeling walking back to your 'camp site' to take a real shower in air condition and sleep in a bed!
3rd: and the obvious fact that everything was on the beach is just an all to awesome factor when listening to live music!
Cons: Having only been to bonnaroo (twice) and it being the only comparable music fest, I suppose my expectations of a festival crowed were a bit high. I was naive to the fact we were in Alabama, Bible Belt capital first and 2nd that the amenities would obviously draw a more 'posh' crowed. I have nothing against how one presents themselves, however by the end of the festival I was ready to come to fists with half of the crowed. I know I let it get to me and should not have but it wore on me after three days. I kept telling my gf all weekend long it was as if I turn to my left and am at Bonnaroo then turn to my right and meet disgusted eyes beating down on me. I understand not everyone are ragers, but I'm not an @ss to anyone who is not either.
Bit of a rant, but to wrap up it and get others feelings on it who were there: Was the crowed near 50% 'festival goer' 50% just trying to have vacation on the beach with music?
The ugly: I say this not as a complaint, but a simple heads up to those who do partake in illegal substances. There was heavy police presences inside the festival, constantly patrolling the main stages. It made me feel uncomfortable even when I was not doing anything illegal... AS for the undercover cops: I had heard rumors about them all day saturday and came to find it to be true at the late night. During PL I had a military cut, athletic built guy come ask me if I had a piece to use. I saw he was holding his product in his and thought twice about it. Something about the guy just wasnt right. After, I went outside to cool off a bit and during a 20 minute span saw two separate arrests made with three under covers carrying patrons out each time.
I am not arguing against legality and morality or any of that I just wanted to give everyone a heads up that the police presence was thick and aggressive AND there was use of undercovers FYI
all that aside I had a great freaking time and look forward to the Gulf Shores next year!

I very well may have! I gave out (well, demanded usually) 500+ high-fives!

there's not that much more music. if i had seen all the sets i planned on i would have seen about as much as i do at roo. it doesn't matter if there are 130 bands or 60, you can only see so much.

Just a quick review from me. I had one of the best festival experiences I've ever had. Up: Music, food, crowd friendliness (overwhelming majority), shade, comfort, lack of conflicts, ability to lay in a hammock and hear Paul Simon Down: Trash and not enough trash cans (come on people! Though still nothing compared to the landfill that is Roo), getting in first day, a few too many drunks at times, sound at Surf Style Stage, congestion at Boom Boom Tent Show of the weekend: Xavier Rudd Honorable Mention: Trombone Shorty & Orleans Review
Re: no no word - I hate that people got arrested, but it's the game. Hangout isn't unique in arresting people for blatant use. They also use undercover cops at Roo to snag people (albeit mostly dealers). Looks like the % of arrests due to drug crimes was less than half a percent of the festival population, which falls in the same range as Roo. Also, I've seen folks arrested at Coachella for lighting up, so none of this assumption that Alabama is special. I saw as much unpunished blatant use at Hangout that I've seen all over the country.
As far as crowds are concerned, I don't think Hangout was any less dense than Roo. Perhaps Roo has a little more space to completely escape from the crowd, but with the certain exception of the Boom Boom area, everything was quite tolerable.
Also, I sort of liked the toilets being off to the side and not scarring up the beach. I had no problem getting to them during the festival, but I'm just one person.
In all, this was a *fantastic* festival. It seems like everyone agrees that the music was amazing and that the beach was beautiful, and I hardly think any of the other complaints even began to take away from that. I'll be back next year without a single doubt.

I respectfully disagree sir. Staying in a condo was more comfortable than camping at roo, but I've never had a beer line backed into a crowd while trying to watch a show at roo. Different strokes for different folks. Glad those that had a good time did so, but I would take roo, waka, or coachella over hangout any day.
^^^ I was mistaken earlier. Waka is capped around 23,000 tickets on around 400 acres (i could be wrong it was the only estimate i could find).....Hangout was capped at 35,000 on around 15 acres ( again could be wrong......only estimate i could find via google). Bonnaroo is on 530 acres........the numbers don't lie
EDIT*** I'm a math nerd and did the numbers.....thats around 2,333 people per acre at hangout.....57.5 per acre at waka.....and about 151 per acre at Bonnaroo (with an attendance of 80,000)

Perhaps I am just really lucky but I have to agree with everyone saying that the police presence wasn't overbearing and the shuttle lines weren't terrible. However, we are pretty straight edged looking crew and had our beach house on West Beach Blvd and not on Orange Beach (which probably takes forever to get there and back from.) We did what we always do, remain smart about what you do and where you do it and kept our heads on a swivel. The police even came to our beach house on Monday night because of a noise complaint, and we had a few underage people with us and they didn't pry inside. I met them outside and was functional and courteous and explained that it was our last night down there and we were still in Hangout mode apparently. They understood and left.
Conversely , I met someone on the shuttle that said his buddy wore nothing but a speedo with a bag inside and they searched and arrested the guy. It's probably more or less a crapshoot.

Almost forgot... I got called on stage to dance with Franti. I was the guy in the blue shorts going nuts that went right up to Michael if anyone was there???? It was during "Shake It". If anyone has a clip of that I'd be forever grateful!

I agree w/this, esp. the Sunday-only attendees. You could tell the Paul Simon fans - no offense, since I love him - but they were the older gents in their leather loafers & khaki shorts with their Botoxed beauties on their arms who were clad in designer duds. As if their threads weren't a dead giveaway, the scowls on their faces expressing their discontent at having to tolerate the heathen youngsters around them spoke volumes.
I saw plenty of high-priced strollers pushed by well-heeled 'rents there, too. (I wondered if condo owners got free admission.) This festival definitely had the Whole Foods demographic covered, moreso than 'Roo. But hey, it was still fun. HOWEVER...to me, this was a daytime festival. It was good, but I still prefer a party-til-dawn fest on the Farm!

I find that hard to believe with an extra day as well as latenights.
