Not a huge fan of Em myself but my friend says I should give him another chance and is gonna give me some stuff to listen to. Definitely not opposed to that.
I'm thinking Eminem and Wayne will probably do something together. Don't they have a song? Drop the World? I don't know where to start with Lil Wayne though. His latest single was beyond awful.
Wiz Khalifa! Going to be awesome!
I honestly don't know much about Atmosphere...I've got some checking out to do..
I'll go to Eminem because he'll have a non-conflicting headline set. But this recent Tony Robbins self-help rap that he's putting out is for the birds. I'll be waiting for Dre to pop out or for him to play some older stuff.
Outside of that, I'm a huge Wayne and Big Boi fan. I'm also going to do my research on Wiz, J. Cole and Atmosphere.
Yet you mention Lil Wayne, which is the quintessential music for tweens. Go figure.
We've already established that for you, if it's not on Def Jux, Rhymesayers, isn't signed to a label or isn't named "Nas," then you don't like it. So go tend to your collection of El-P remixes, or listen to The Cold Vein for the thousandth time, and give it a rest.
Yet I'm excited for Big Boi, Wiz and J Cole. Loved Jay-Z last year. And have been to plenty of Eminem shows, so chalk up another one for me. Sorry that Lil Wayne is one of the most idiotic and overrated acts in music today. And have you seen him live? Unfortunately I have. Late and horrible, and I'm not the only one who says this about his live performances. He caters to tweens, it's a proven fact. Go listen to some Drake while you're at it.
So do what you have to do to label me as a indie back packing hip-hop head to make yourself feel better about Lil Wayne being there. You would be completely wrong and it doesn't cover up his god awful lyrics and inconsistent flow.
With that said, I did go nuts when i saw Atmosphere on the lineup. LOL

Weren't you the guy last year who said that a) Jay-Z was going to suck, and b) Jay Electronica was going to be the rap show of the weekend? Pretty sure you were.
As for the people who keep on saying that Jay-Z always nails a live show, keep drinking the Kool-Aid. Jay-Z is a great artist, a legend. But he does tend to mail in shows. He needs the support of guest appearances. Hell, his secondary fans expect guest appearances nowadays. He cannot carry a show by himself at this stage of his career. Four out of the last 6 Jay shows I went to were unenergetic and uninspired. The two that were top level were filled with guest appearances (9-11 was one). I don't blame Jay, I blame his new fans who don't expect more from him. Blueprint 3 was crap on a plate - yet his secondary fans bought the album in droves and forced airplay. Jay hasn't made a solid album since the Black Album.
And for those who don't know Jay Electronica now, you will soon enough. Just a very talented artist. A 5 percenter who doesn't put it in your face. He will do very well at Bonnaroo.
Say Jay at IZOD Center a few months before, he looked old. Then he killed it at Bonnaroo. I admitted that after the fact with no problem, why don't you quote that. Plus, Jay-Z, despite my concerns, was a legend going in with a great track record. Lil Wayne is not, he's for pop fans, valley girls, fans boys, and suburban kids with teenage angst. And Jay Electronica did kill it. Jay-Z was better. NFQ.
I said I'm looking forward to Wiz, he's not a personal favorite of mine. But he certainly doesn't have the sloppy ass flow of a Lil Wayne. Plus i haven't seen him live yet, I have to give him a chance. Please tell me you are smart enough to know the difference.
Also liking an artists like Wiz Khalifa, and then saying Wayne sucks, just is kind of contradicting as a statement.
This statement reeks of trollishness. They couldn't be any different. And as I just noted, I'm not even saying Wiz is a personal favorite of mine - but I do want to see him plive. Plus he doesn't have a poor track record of shitty live performances like Wayne does.
Weren't you the guy last year who said that a) Jay-Z was going to suck, and b) Jay Electronica was going to be the rap show of the weekend? Pretty sure you were.
Edit: Yeah, that was you.

Lil Wayne is ranked as a top 5 MC by every major rap publication and news source. His company includes the likes of Jay Z, Eminem, Kanye, etc. Do all of these artists cater to the "tween pop" crowd?

Lil Wayne does make some music for tweens, but he also makes some good stuff too. You can't really argue against either. When his effort matches his ability it makes for great hip hop. Him and Eminem are remarkably similar if you think about it.
Disappointed about no Black Star, Odd Future, or Based God. Having seen all of the acts on there at least once (except for quacking Chiddy Bang) I can say Big Boi and Atmosphere put on really good shows. Eminem used to put on a good show, but his new material is pretty terrible, and I cant say I enjoyed him at Yankee Stadium. From my experiences with Wiz and J. Cole it really depends on the venue, and I think they'll both do pretty well at Roo. I like some of Wayne's stuff, but I did not think he was very good live, actually it was kinda bad.
All in all this should be a decent year for hip-hop at Roo, hopefully after Tyler and Hodgy shut it down on Fallon tomorrow Odd Future get added.

I would never do that - you're clearly not a "head." You're a self-righteous wannabe who tries to pump up his credibility by denouncing things that are mainstream/popular and trumpeting all that is underground. Sorry, but citing your enthusiasm for J.Cole and Big Boi doesn't help - not like those two burned up the charts with their record sales. You did it last year (sh*tting all over the hip-hop lineup except for Jay Electronica), and you're doing it now. It's boorish, and it's merely a rehash of the "TRUE HIP HOP FANS LIKE ARTISTS X, Y AND Z AND HATE A, B AND C" arguments that take place on every hip-hop message board all over the internet. It's just tired and tiresome at this point.
All this because I was worried about how Jay-Z would translate at Bonnaroo and because I mock the style of Lil Wayne? You certainly are a very misinformed hip-hop "fan" if this is the case. You're the kid who got into hip-hop very recently and hates when long time fans cite Biggie, Pac, Rakim, Kane, etc over today's artists because you weren't on the ground floor for it and you deflect those kids who were there and say they are elitists because they bring those names up when reflecting on good hip-hop. You are so transparent it's sickening.
You went to the old playbook; disagreed with a hip-hop head who hates your hero Wayne and called him an out of touch elitist who shifted to the indie scene because he was tired on new mainstream hip-hop today. Sound about right? I'm calling Wayne out because he's unbelievably garbage, not because I'm some sort of mainstream rap hating elitist. Stop playing guessing games based on a few statements and quit the self-loathing.
If someone sucks I'll say he sucks. Weezy, Dreezy, Minaj - they all suck. Porn stars. I can't stand them. Wheelchair. The are straight garbage. Sanitation. I'm not feeling them. Arabian thief. Stop jocking Wayne and Drake. Coffee Cake. It makes you sound like a fan boy/angst ridden tween. Troll.

Did you just "spit hot fiya" in that last paragraph?

That was my version of Fake Drake, but I like the Dylan Dylan Dylan Dylan Dylan comparison.

The f*cked up thing is that we actually agree on a ton. Trust - I can't stand Drake (you can search my past posts for my derision of the idea of Drake at Bonnaroo, dude makes chick rap), and I'm a huge fan of the genre in general. Not going to be getting into a "who's d*ck is bigger" contest with you here, but I've been listening to hip-hop pretty much since I started listening to music, and it was all NYC: Wu, Biggie, Nas, Mobb Deep, etc. Even today, the only "mainstream" rap you'll find on my playlist is probably Wayne, Kanye, maybe Jeezy if that counts.
If you legit don't like Wayne, fine, whatever, to each his own. I just hate the idea put forward by many here that if something's popular and/or appeals to lots of people, it's garbage. That isn't the case, flat out.
Fair enough man, not sure how you like all those acts and can still like Wayne - but whatever. But don't pigeon hole me because I sang Jay Electronica's praises and was worried about Jay-Z last year. It was perfectly reasonable for me to worry about a 40 year-old rapper translating to the Bonnaroo crowd. After seeing eminem at Yankee Stadium last fall, I am concerned about Eminem this Bonnaroo. But it doesn't mean I'm an elitist, I just care about hip-hop way too much. To me, good hip-hop is good hip-hop - whether you sell a million or sell a thousand. But it's not like I jumped off the Jay Erlectronica bandwagon now because he signed to the ROC. I'm not that guy and never will be.
And for pmo who compared Wiz to Lil Wayne, you're way off. A better comparison to Wiz is Curren$y, J Cole, and even Cudi or Wale. The Wiz/Wayne comparison is waaaay off in so many categories.

Clearly rambling at the end there....
I was clearly personifying Drake's extreme word play. Shakespeare. He's one of a kind. Snowflake. He's got skillz to pay the billz. Positive K. What a witty writer. Chuck Klosterman. I'm terrified on how great Drake can become one day. Blake Griffin. He truly is magical. Genie. I wonder how he sleeps at night. Insomnia. Chalk another one up for a child TV star. Corey Feldman.

I mean, probably the same way I like Radiohead but still enjoy dumb 80's c*ck rock and sh*t. Some music I like because it's complex/intricate/mind-expanding/whatever, some music I like because it's got a beat that knocks/a riff that sounds good while driving with the windows down/a chorus that makes drinking beer more enjoyable. Just the way it goes.
I'm with you on the Eminem front - not really a huge fan of his material, particularly his latest stuff, and I haven't heard good things about his live show, but whatever.
And for the record, I am/was a Jay Electronica fan - would like a proper album, and would love for him to stop dropping the beat during EVERY song he does live, but still.
I wrote about that last year about Jay Electronica. Sometimes an emcee knows how good he is and has to show it to people. Sometimes it's overkill. That was almost the case at Bonnaroo, but it was still an awesome performance. Plus talking to the crowd is a huge element of the genre in general, why not do it with a capellas? It's just a good reason as anything else if not better. Last year Jay-Z spoke the crowd with a political message, Jay Elec went A Capella and talked about choking women during sex, Wale complained about being late and the sound being quacked up, Cudi talked about his many problems in life, etc.

I would like to express my appreciation to the gentlemen partaking in this thread for keeping me entertained at work this afternoon. I thought the Schizophrenic screaming about "dying like a Buddhist martyr set ablaze in Public Square" and "healing sex on the police" was the creme de la creme of my day. However, you have somehow surpassed even him.
We're all a mess of paradoxes. Believing in things we know can't be true. We walk around carrying feelings too complicated and contradictory to express. But when it all becomes too big, and words aren't enough to help get it all out, there's always music.
Chiddy Bang is hot. I've been addicted to the Swelly Express for months now. Nice old school flavor. Saw weezy in 08, nothing special. He was wasted, and apparently he can't get wasted now since he's on probo, so maybe that'll help improve his show. Psyched for Em. Wanted to go to home and home real bad, this should make up for it.
