I have been to Bonnaroo every year but one and I am extremely disappointed in this line up. This line up is not representation of the last 10 years. If you agree with me go like this facebook site we are trying to create a real number. If you are a fan of the line up I am happy for you and this is just a place for us who like to bitch about it a place to do so.
Yeah what the F! I was more excited to see them than any hip-hop act since Beastie Boys. Also wanted the Roots w/ John Legend but I'll survive. Glad everyone seems to be pumped for Eminem and Lil Wayne. Not my kindof thing, but it'll get alot of my friends on the farm for the first time so it's all good. I'm not gonna miss Atmosphere (LN?) or Big Boi, thats for darn sure
someone said earlier there was room for 10-15 additions... with 90 bands confirmed, the bonnaroo website itself says over 150 of your favorite bands..i think we'll get a little more than 15...CMON Black Star!!!
I want Blackstar, The Roots, some kind of Wu. Eminem will bring friends. No doubt in my mind. Fingers crossed for Dre!! But he'll have D12 at the very least. Lil Wayne will most likely bring guests as well, but his whole young money roster kiiiinda sucks if you ask me...
for the record: this should say Bonnaroo 2011 Rap Discussion.
They failed on giving a hip-hop undercard that makes heads happy, but totally pass on getting rappers with talent. Details, details, details. Hope for Blackstar/Pray for The Roots. and Look forward to DJ type additions, etc
This is the first message board I've ever been on, the only reason I joined is because I love Bonnaroo and wanted to read and talk about it all year long.

what?
I think he's saying rap and hip hop are different so this thread is mis-titled.
Lil Wayne is alright. I've been listening to some of his stuff, and...he's alright.
Let's face it, neither Wayne nor Eminem are strictly making music "y'all love to sell your druqs to." These guys are after a broad based audience, and their contemporary music reflects that. They both spend a lot of money on top-end record production. The question is: are they going to be worth your $$$ live?
I think this answer is not really for both. Live rap/hip-hop (another time on this distinction) shows, for the concert-goer used to a stage of musicians, or even DJs, often appears lacking. It is difficult for any MC to put on a live concert that enthralls the audience from beginning to end. DJs tend to use flashy lights (pun mos def intended) to make up for the lack of movement and what I would term "action" at all ends of the stage.
Good live music is like a good play; its theater with instruments. MCs struggle to hold an entire audience captive over 90 minutes; historically, dancers or members of the crew come out on stage to fill this void. If you've been to a rap concert, you know that when the "crew" gets on the mic, it muddles lyrics and is kind of annoying. Voice backing in the studio does NOT translate well to a live medium.
Eminem is the truth as a freestyle MC, which is the kind of novelty few rappers can offer at a live show. But that's the point: an MC, even a good one, needs parlor tricks like a freestyle, or guest spots, or dancers, or something to fill that void. Hell, some of the best vocalists on the planet struggle to captivate an audience for an entire show, up on a huge stage alone.
In short, rappers generally don't measure up at live shows b/c, alone or in a group, there's simply not enough "action" on the stage to hold a viewer's attention.

Did you see Jay-Z last year?
Up till that show, I didn't care much for rap/hip hop live shows, but Jay-Z blew me away.
Don't know if Eminem and Wayne can pull off what Jigga did last year, but I've decided to be optimistic. I think if we all (including them) go into these shows with a good mentality and energy, we will all walk away happy.

Jay-Z's band is what put him over the top for me. And I agree about giving Eminem a chance. If you had told me last year that Jay-Z was going to be my favorite show of the year, I would've mocked you mercilessly. Lo and behold? Jay-Z was literally my favorite show of last year. Better than LCD. Better than Jeff Beck. Just incredible stuff.
Eminem doesn't have a live band? I'm sure he does.
Usually not. Mostly just a DJ. Hopefully he changes that for Roo.
I was wondering how the negotiations with Em went for Roo. I wonder if they would ask an artists to change things about their act to play. Like live band, set list, etc.

No didn't make it to Roo last year, but I heard his set was awesome. That's why I said "generally," there's an exception to every generalization.
I hear ya....
I think the downside to the Jay-Z set last year is the bar is now set really high for all future hip hop acts. I actually hung near the back for jay z last year cause I didn't think it would be as great as it was. The highlight for me was Jayz stating he was going to turn the farm into a club... 15 minutes later when I looked around at all the people at the back dancing their asses off... he lived up to his word. I've never seen that many people at the very back of a concert going that nuts.

in the last like 5 stadium/actually concert shows Em has done he had a live band....he will bring the same to roo, it would be absolutely dumb for him not to.
Its all about distinctions. hip hop is a cultural reference (system, religion, however you see it -- too much KRS One in my life). Rapping is an action and a leading force in hip-hop but there is the idea of being a total package as a performer/group too. We concentrate totally on the personalities right now and not the group mentality/artistic realm of music. I grade hip-hop like all other music and listen for the way one uses samples, instruments, flow, timing, lyrics, and creative drop-in choices.
Don't get me wrong, I'm not judging just wished we got Black Star, DJ Shadow, etc. folks who bring back old jams through records.
Does anyone know what kind of stage setup Eminem uses on his tour? I feel like part of the reason why the Jay show was so captivating was because of the giant LCD screen setup he had...really was beautiful. Also, does he have a DJ that plays backing tracks or is there a live band?
I was going to say the same- I went to the home/home show at Yankee stadium and Em had a live band with him. He's not on the level of Jay-Z performing live but he's not bad and will defintely have some guests with him- Dr. Dre did show up at all 4 home/home shows so I'd say its pretty likely especially with work on Detox supposedly winding down.
The hip hop overall this year is better from top to bottom just due to depth- I don't think ANYONE expected Wayne and Eminem to both be on it. That said- my predicition for best hip hop act of the weekend will be Big Boi
I'm also hoping we get J.Cole--> Wiz Khalifa on Thursday night- that'd be a good way to start out Bonnaroo

That was because his last 4 stadium shows were with Jay-z who uses a live band. Eminem usually doesn't.

Usually a DJ. If the stage setup is ANYTHING like the shows he did with Jay-Z then we are in for a really cool show.
Roo won't have the same setup as those stadium shows.....but it should be something similar.

No..I meant that there was a show before the jaz z shows where he had a live band, then there was when he was on the bill for promoting call of duty, black ops in vegas, live band, and I believe there were 2 other shows witha live band (SNL was a live band too i think?)
If they were Jay-z's band, why did they have Recovery shirts and all the other Recovery shit all over them? Bottom line- I'm fairly sure Eminem would be smart enough to bring a live band to Roo.
