^ icantenough, here's an awesome version of one of my favorite Beirut songs. Someone else can do a much better job of describing their style and all that than I could.
I've got a major man-crush on Zach Condon. His voice is just flat out incredible to me.
Smith Westerns are an indie-rock band from Chicago, Illinois. They released a new single, "Weekend", on November 4, 2010, from their most recent album Dye It Blonde, which was released on January 18, 2011. New album is INCREDIBLE. They write some great music, and I especially love their guitarist!!!
Can somebody recommend a good STS9 album? IDC if it's live or studio, just want something to get into them. Youtube vids of them are awesome!
Beirut was originally a solo project turned into massive band. The lore goes that he traveled to Europe to stay with his cousin and was inspired by the culture and music of Eastern Europe, and it shows in his earlier work. In 2009 he pushed his sounds further by releasing a double EP called March of the Zapotec/Holland. Zapotec sounded more like traditional Beirut while Holland (also technically billed as Realpeople and not as Beirut, but is still Beirut for all intents and purposes) has a strong electronic influence. He'll definitely bring an extremely unique show to Roo '11.
The Walkmen are an American indie rock band, with members based in New York City and Philadelphia. The band formed in 2000 with three members from Jonathan Fire*Eater—Paul Maroon (guitar, piano), Walter Martin (organ/bass), and Matt Barrick (drums)—and two from The Recoys, Peter Bauer (bass/organ) and Hamilton Leithauser (vocals, guitar). All but Bauer attended St. Albans in Washington, D.C.
They prefer the sound of vintage musical instruments, particularly the upright piano, and have often recorded at Marcata Recording, a recording studio built in Harlem in 1999 by the three former members of Jonathan Fire*Eater and later relocated to upstate New York.[1]
Supposedly when these guys record they use a dynamic mic and record all the instruments in the same room, and thats how they get that awesome sound. Saw them with Grizzly Bear .. such a fun show. They are great live, have an amazing singer, and have been one of my favorite bands since I was like 16.
I'll put a song from their first album (2002) and one from the new one (2010).

The Walkmen are an American band (with members from Philly and NYC).
Great band to see live. They're musically very tight. This song stopped me in my tracks the first time I heard it. It's from their 2008 album "You & Me". It's worth checking out - very interesting sound.
Wavves is an American noise pop band based out of San Diego, California. They are currently signed to Fat Possum Records. His first two albums have a more lo-fi noise feel to them, while his most recent has a more of a surf rock feel to it. His bassist used to work with the late Jay Reatard.
I'd like to say also I've seen him twice live and it has always been a really fun show.
Ratatat is another band that I'm excited to see again. Theyre a New York City electronic music duo consisting of Gaz (guitar) and producer Taj (bass, synthesizers). Just two dudes bustin out sick jams on stage.
They hold up pretty well live, making the crowd a giant dance party and the energy is great. They've been known to have some pretty awesome visuals too.

Beirut would be the perfect soundtrack to a bicycle ride and picnic taken somewhere in Europe,........or to basking in the sunshine on a farm in the south, with an ice cold beer with drops of sweat slowly sliding down the bottle. Sultry, melancholic sounding(even when the song is happy) and sometimes monotonous multi instrument band. All this said in the best possible way,...i would say if you are fans of Modest Mouse, Noah and the whale, Andrew bird, that sorta stuff you will most likely enjoy them.
Best Coast is an American indie rock band based in Los Angeles, California, and is often categorized under the subgenres of garage rock, surf pop, and lo-fi. The band currently consists of Bethany Cosentino, who writes all of the band's songs and fronts the group, multi-instrumentalist Bobb Bruno, and former Vivian Girls drummer Ali Koehler.
I've seen them too and they are pretty fun, but it's no Wavves (leaders of the two bands date each other).
Sleigh Bells is an American noise pop music duo. The group released their debut album, Treats, on May 11, 2010.
im sold if that video is any indication of how their show is going to be.
Unfortunately I've heard that they kind of suck live. Still won't stop me from seeing them, but I guess I just won't have high expectations. Plus, I'll be able to see Alexis Krauss in person

This is like the perfect band for an afternoon recoup session. Hydrate, smoke a j, bob your head, hydrate, smoke some more, bob your head,...
Seriously though, Best Coast does have a nice chill sound. It's almost as if a band from the 50's hooked up with Marty McFly and came to the future. Retro sound with modern lyrics.
Opeth is a progressive metal band from Sweden that is influenced by many diverse musical styles ranging from jazz, 1970s progressive rock, death metal, and blues. Their recent releases have deviated from their traditional death metal influenced style, with more emphasis on progressive elements. Vocalist Mikael Åkerfeldt is also noted for utilizing both clean singing and death growls, often in the same track. Due to their unique blend of melodic and progressive elements, Opeth are often classified separately from more typical death metal acts. The name Opeth was taken from Wilbur Smith’s novel Sunbird and derived from Opet, a city of the moon named in the novel.
Portugal the. Man If anyone of you saw them in 09 you know how awesome this is.
Ive seen them like 5 times and cannot wait for their bonnaroo set. I love this band
Its a lot cooler if you know what's going on, ie they transition in and out of songs a lot and jam a little in between. They do stuff like taking intro or outro verses of songs and throwing them into the middle of other songs, stuff like that. I've never seen a band that plays so well together and steps up the energy level so much from their albums. They really just absolutely love playing to crowds
The Head and the Heart are pretty good. Theyre a seattle based band that has an indie folk kind of vibe. Kinda Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zero's-esque. They've got a good energy.

Me too chooch, I've got a feeling they are gonna be huge by next year! Dye it Blonde is definitely in my top five albums of 2010/2011.
Deer Tick is an American indie folk band from Providence, Rhode Island led by guitarist and singer-songwriter John McCauley.[1] Deer Tick's music has often been described as a combination of folk, blues, and country.

My Morning Jacket is an American Rock Band from Louisville Kentucky. They originally began as more of an alternative country band with their first full length The Tennessee Fire but have broadened their sound to include become one of the best touring Rock bands in the world.
The Band consists of Jim James (singer-songwriter, guitarist - also known as Yim Yames), Tom "Two-Tone Tommy" Blankenship (bassist), Patrick Hallahan (drummer), Carl Broemel (guitarist, pedal steel guitarist, saxophonist, vocalist), and Bo Koster (keyboardist, percussionist, vocalist).
Albums: Tennesse Fire: Southern Gothic Folk songs. Sounds like it was recorded in a silo.
At Dawn- They broaden their sound a little bit here and hit the nail on the head. James writes possibly his best song, "The Way That He Sings" which sounds like late 60's am radio perfection.
It Still Moves- Where At Dawn had space to breath, It Still Moves has none. This album is packed with the best rock riffs since Crazy Horse, they really hit their stride. Album features two of their best live songs "Run Thru" and "One Big Holiday"
Z- Some argue this is their best album, and it's certainly their most experimental. The biggest change since TF into AD, the band still has some classic rockers like "Lay Low" but also lays the foundation around the creepy "Dondante" which absolutely rips live.
Evil Urges- Some consider this the black sheep, others see it as fun. MMJ turn to funk and soul along with their old Crazy Horse tendencies. They even have turn to new wave with "Touch Me I'm Going to Scream Pt. II" the 8 and a half minute reprise of an earlier tighter version of the track.
Live: While I like the albums a lot, they really excel live. Patrick's pummels the drums, Jim prowls the stage, and Carl shreds on guitar, all while Two-Tone Tommy and Bo form the backbone that lets the other three roam.
This is a thread to tell us about different acts on the Bonnaroo lineup.
Deerhunter is a band from Atlanta Georgia that makes shoegaze and post-punk. The band consists of
Bradford Cox (He has Marfan's Syndrome which is why he's super skinny, Guitar, Vocals) Moses Archuleta (Drums,) Lockett Pundt(Guitar, some Vocals) and Josh Fauver (Bass)
They have four albums, that get progressively less noisy/shoegazy, and more psych rock. Turn it up F*ggot - Super Noisy/Angrier, followed an original band members death Cryptograms- More Shoegazy/ Less Noisy Microcastles- Psych/ Post-Punk Halcyon Digest- Most accessible record they've ever released, but also the best. More psych rock mixed with their best songwriting to date.
Here are some live videos
This is an entire show, so if you really want to dig deep, start here. Great recording quality/sound. This show was in 09, so a lot of Microcastle material.
One of the best songs on Halcyon
Also this song absolutely slays live. This is one of Lockett's
You beat me to Deerhunter...
I first saw them play at the back corner of the Earl (opposite corner of the stage) in 06 and have been going to shows as a devoted fan ever since. Their live show is something to behold and they are sure to gain tons of new fans at Roo. God, I hope they play Thursday night. They put on the best show I have ever attended and they are my favorite band. P.S. The Cryptograms and Fluorescent Grey material really slays live.
