The Low Anthem formed as a professional band in 2006 in Providence, RI. The founding members were Ben Knox Miller and Jeffrey Prystowsky. Their mutual interests in Americana, baseball, and morally agnostic narrative necessitated the formation of The Low Anthem.
The Low Anthem have recorded three full-length records, toured extensively with over 100 shows in 2007, won Best Album of 2008 from the Providence Phoenix, received national radio play, and have a devoted fanbase across the Northeast and beyond. "Oh My God, Charlie Darwin" has already earned the band glowing reviews from NPR, Paste Magazine and Performing Songwriter.
When The Low Anthem perform live, each member performs on a number of instruments, ranging from crotales to singing saw. A staple of their live performance is This God Damn House, written in 2007 by former band member Dan Lefkowitz. Recently, The Low Anthem have been performing new material, Apothecary, Maybe So, and Ghost Woman Blues, which appear on their newest album Smart Flesh.
Their set will mix in soft folk with 4-part harmonies and then switch over to swinging electric powered passion.
Opening for Iron and Wine this spring and playing on Sunday this year. Roo-vets from 2008.
Gogol Bordello is a Gypsy punk band from the Lower East Side of New York City. Formed in 1999 and known for theatrical stage shows and persistent touring, much of the band's sound is inspired by Gypsy music. The band incorporates minor-key accordion and violin (and on some albums, saxophone) mixed with punk and dub. Gogol Bordello's first single was released in 1999, and since then they have released five full-length albums, and one EP.
Videos do NOT do this band justice. You really need to see this band in a live setting to obtain a full understanding of what makes this band so great. The energy that flows from Gogol to the crowd and back again is truly something unique and special. Their blend of traditional Gypsy music and punk rock ignites the crowd and the band with so much energy.
If anyone going to Roo wants to catch a very talented act that will have everyone dancing, clapping, singing, and moving in the crowd then do NOT miss Gogol Bordello. Trust me on this one.
^^^I think it says alot of the band and of Eugene Hutz when a fan jumps on stage and Eugene pushes security off of him and lets him rock out on stage for a little while
