Whether it's your first Bonnaroo or you’re a music festival veteran, we welcome you to Inforoo.
Here you'll find info about artists, rumors, camping tips, and the infamous Roo Clues. Have a look around then create an account and join in the fun. See you at Bonnaroo!!
I will post after I set it up and tell everyone if it works or not, or if its even worth the trouble. It will be about 1 week from roo before I can do any of this.
yeah I see what your saying wolfman. What i was going to do is put the unit on a little box to get it up off the ground and after I tarp up my ezups I was going to cut a hole in the tarp shaped like a window so the front of the ac is in the tent and the back is outside of the tent (just like a window unit in a house) so you get nothing but cold air. Also I want to double tarp everything and then seal the tent up with zip ties and ducktape. So it would basically be a window unit in a cut out tarp window if you can visualize what im saying. (Im not the best at explaining my self). Here at my work my office is a 12x12 and the 5000 btu puts out very very cold air. I know it wont work as good as my insulated office but it still has to work right? I have the mechanics worked out in my head. The only part of this system I dont have on me at the moment is the generator(my uncle uses it for his business), but I will be getting it from him a couple of weeks before roo and I am going to set this up in my back yard the weekend before and see if it works or what probs I will run into, but I'm pretty confident it will work with a little brain power and tlc. I am also going to use clear plastic to make the walls and seal up the tent so I can still see out of the ezup and I wont be shut off to the world. Anyone with good ideas chime in, I'm all ears!
That might work somewhat I am still a little doubtful about how much benefit you are going to get for the amount of trouble it is going to be.

A trial run before Roo is a very good idea and definitely something I am going to do.
It may not work, but I guess there's no harm in trying. Where there's a will, there's a way. And if my will fails me, well... then the shop fan will be a great backup. I may even try both ways to compare how much better one is over the other.
lol like the pic. Yeah If you see a big ezup bubble while your there come say hi and see it for yourself. See the thing is that I only live about 25 min from the farm but I like to stay and camp to get the whole experience, but my wife on the other hand would like to go home to the air conditioner every night and I just dont want to do that so I'm bring the air with me (hopefully) so we can stay and get the full experience. I have alot of friends who said if they dont have money to rent an rv this year they are not going(because of the heat last year) but if I can configure up some ac no one has to rent a rv and will stay and camp. My friends can't hack it out I guess. I will be there every year regardless of air conditioning.
If this generator circle is going to be as special as we all hope, I think we need to explore modifications to the mufflers on each. We can alter each so they provide a different sound. A chorus of generators to commemorate an amazing 4 days at Bonnaroo!
Well I never claimed to be the smartest guy but one would think that a car puts out more carbon monoxide than a generator, and I can insure you that there will be lots and lots of people getting into there cars and turning on the ac to cool off all around the festival . I just don't see how its any diff, but whatever it doesn't matter to me. You do you and I will do me. not literally lol. If you want to chill with me at roo just look for the exuast fumes Ps. if you dont like rv's and generators at festivals then maybe you shloul'd not go to them since they are at every camping festival .
nice thread guys, i will also do my best to create a decent setup with an exhaust and post a pic. now all i need is some metal ducts and a spare muffler
I said that I have used the Taxi's twice. Two times out of how many years now? Four? I don't remember them being there in 06. Once to get to my sisters camp and once to get back. And that was because they didn't bring anything with them. Regina was about to start and I could have care less about missing half of it.
And as far as the air conditioner in the car goes the only time I did that was last year because the car I was in needed to be on in order for me to plug the phone in to call home and check on my children. It wasn't an issue in 09 because the kids were with us.
Just wanted to set things straight.
And as far as the RV thing. It didn't used to be that way. For a long time all of the camping festivals that I attended you couldn't even park next to your car. You had to park and then haul all of your gear to the festival.
I'm not saying that oh you did it or whatever, just simply stating that people in general do it and a cars put out way more fumes than a little 2000 w generator, so I just don't think its a big deal to take mine as long as I'm not shooting fumes over to my neighbors. I consider my self a pretty responsible person and would not do something to harm others. I'm just trying to figure out the best way I can do roo for me and anyone around me. I want to have one of the best campsites and try and make it feel like home. If you want to go to roo and camp in the heat in just a tent then so be it, I wont judge you, But dont judge us cause we are thinking outside the box to be relaxed and have the best time possible. just sayin. don't hate appreciate!
I don't hate. Just if I wanted to feel like I was at home. I would be at home. Here in Buffalo. Where it's cold. It snows. And right now when it does the kids don't even want to play in it because it's muddy and icy. So they're inside and fighting and generally driving everyone nuts.
So yes when the summer comes I want to be outside. In a tent. I will welcome the heat. Even if last year was a little uncomfortable.

I agree that it sounds like way too much trouble than it's worth. . . The descriptions of your set up keep me wondering how do you get in and out of there once you seal up your tarps? Won't having an door make it hard to keep all that air in? I mean what if you come back to camp and there is a huge hole in your tarp, or someone takes your ac or your generator. What if you fry your generator or your a/c? What if you spend all your time setting this up and then it's rainy and windy all weekend. That's a bunch of "what ifs" but "what ifs" can and do happen.
There are just too many reasons to keep it simple at Bonnaroo and that's what I plan on doing. A couple batter powered fans and a small misting fan are all I need to make it. But I love the outdoors and fresh air.
well for the door I'm just going to have two tarps that cover one side and they will have a 4' to 6'overlap to walk though so there wont be a big air leak when people are coming in and out of the tent. Also I'm going to lock up my generator and ac in my truck when I am not at camp and just re seal my ac back into my tarp window with fresh duct tape when I am ready to use it again (its a lot of work i know but it won't take long). And if the generator fries it would suck but its built pretty good and it has fuses that would break before it would fry it. And if it rains the whole time I will just leave it in my truck and not use (I live 25 mins from the farm so its not going to be out of my way to bring it with me and I will have lots of room for it in my truck). I have most of the mechanics figured out in my head its just kind of hard to explain them without physically showing you how this setup works. It may not be worth it to a lot of you guys but that's cool everyone is diff. If it works out really well then I know I have a awesome way to camp for all of the bonnaroo's to come but like I said before I will be putting this up in my backyard the weekend before roo so it will be just as hot I'm sure that weekend and will get to see if it will be worth bringing it or not. The only thing I am the most worried about is the vented box. I will really have to design for good air flow. It's pretty quiet already )eu20000 w honda) So I may not even make a box if I see fit. I def know Im not going to let it over heat and keep a check on it ever so often.
^^^^Like I said before check out this site on generetiquette. These guys have been putting generators in the desert during the hot summer for years now, I say hot like 120 degrees hot, it dusty as all hell and these people know what they are talking about. Make a box, your neighbors will appreciate you for it!
This sounds Cool I would really like to see you set-up!
Please please please please don't camp next to me if you're planning to run a generator all night.
Here's a different idea for you to try that's simpler and maybe cheaper and definitely more neighbor-friendly.
Before you go to bed, empty a bag of ice into a big shallow bowl of some sort, or even an upside-down garbage can lid. Set a battery-operated camping fan up so that it blows across the ice towards you. Enjoy the cool air.

Almost as bad is turning it on in the morning when people are trying to get the last piece of sleep they can.
have you ever tried one i live right off lake erie and it can get quite humid maybe not as humid but it looks like the best one on the market have you seen any better
Not going to be running it at night (as I've posted in previous post), and like I said I will build a box for it if I think Its to loud. I will be looking out for my fellow neighbors, I bet the people I camp next to this year will prob not even know I have a generator that's how confident I am on this issue. So If I think its to loud (witch I pretty sure it won't be) even with a box I will not run it cause I am not trying to ruin anyone's bonnaroo around me. I want to get along with my neighbors. Hell I bet at night if I did run, it could not compete with the lunar stage. But I'm not running it at night anyway so it doesn't matter. And as the OP stated he wanted to know if it were possible to do this, not hey would you care if your neighbors run a generator. So lets hear some good ideas and not complaints. Oh wait....... forgot that will never happen

I have seen multiple people try it with multiple designs. At the end of the day you just can not effectively cool humid air when it is as hot as it is down here. I am willing to bet on Lake Eerie that you never deal with the kind of prolonged temps and humidity that we get down here. You might make a highly shaded small tent slightly cooler if you kept it sealed up, but I kind of doubt you will get more than a 10-15 degree change and even then the air is going to heat up as fast as you cool it.
If you have your tent shaded enough for this to work all you really need is a battery powered fan to get that extra couple of hours sleep.

So when exactly are you going to run it? Either people will run it at night to sleep, or run it in the morning when I am trying to sleep. Either way I hope like hell they are not camped by me you included. Even with a box it will be within 10-15 feet of somebodys tent, and I doubt they will appreciate it. Unless you are planning on only running it during the day, which is when I would just as soon be inside under a mist tent odds are it is going to irritate someone. Also at some point you get to where it will make more financial sense to just share an RV with someone.

sound arguments aside, don't use clear plastic as it will allow sunlight (assuming sunny weather) to heat the shelter from the inside so to speak...use something reflective like tarps. I will personally wait til a reliable weather report before deciding...but i have a plan to use a/c duct board attached to the side of my ez up city...been going since 07 but last year was rough...if its forecast the same i will likely put together my contraption.
If its to loud I will not run it until maybe like 10:00 in the morn till like 2:00 in the afternoon. That's a good point about the clear plastic, it might make my tent a greenhouse. Maybe I can use tarp but cut some square windows in the tarp and then replace the square holes with clear so I can still see outside and have like 4 windows, 1 on each side of the ezup. What i might also do is just get up when the sun comes up and not use my air until the afternoon when I'm ready to take a nap. That way I know I won't bother anyone cause its almost impossible to sleep in the middle of the afternoon on the farm. The post above me is cool though I wont be putting it in my camp tent. That looks like it would work pretty well.
