Hello fellow Rooers, So This is my second time i will be attending Bonnaroo and I'm trying to think of ways to improve upon my last experience. One thing that would surely help would be some type of ac unit.
The first one is not going to do you any good in Tennessee for the most part. I did not see an exact link to it, but it looks like an ice water model. It is so humid that the exchanger is not going to work well, as it will not be able to dry, and cool the air very much.
You can get a small window unit and a generator, but I doubt it is going to be worth the investment, plus the pain of trying to find a place to run a loud carbon monoxide emitting generator in the GA campgrounds.
Your best bet is invest money in a couple of good 12x12 ezups, and reflective tarps, for about 300 bucks or so you can build yourself a pretty nice cave area, and as long as you keep some airflow, but block the sun you will be pretty much ok until 9:30 or 10:00 for sleeping, and the rest of the day for hanging out. After the first night my body adjusts pretty well to the heat and I stop having a problem.
If you are just going to plug up any old A/C unit to the generator, make sure you realize that you will need a vent of some sorts. Otherwise you will be pushing hot and cold air around your tent. You can find small window units for 100-150 bucks at target, walmart, etc. The easiest way to do something like this would be to keep the ac unit outside the tent, fabricate a duct attachment to the outlet and run it in your tent. If there was an easy or cheap way to do it, we would all have it. My opinion would be to get some reflective tarps hung facing east to provide any extra cool time in the morning you can.
thanks for the advice, especially on the battery powered one, I'm kinda skeptical about its performance because of everything you pretty much just listed
Except for last year. Last year was the first time I ever turned my car on just to sit in the air for a minute. Also our car only charges phones when it's on and I needed to call home to check on the kids. So it just made sense to sit in the AC for a few minutes.
Last year we had a couple in our group that brought a generator, and some sort of A/C unit. They had a massive tent with tarps over it so it was really dark and cold in there. They had a laptop, phone chargers, cold air...
I don't think it's worth the time, money, or trouble. Someone had to listen to that generator motor all night and really you're not at camp long enough to need such a thing. They would go in their tent to relax and be disconnected from the rest of the group, and the festival as a whole. They would usually spend their time out in the heat with their friends instead of their friends joining them in the cold tent.
Well I'm taking my 2000 watt honda generator and my 5000 btu air conditioner this year. You dont really need it at night cause it feels pretty good, but for a few extra hours of sleep in the morning and until I'm ready to head to centeroo, it will be a life saver. Im going to build a vented box for it even though it doesn't make much noise, just to keep it as quiet as i can. Only thing I am worried about is getting in my generator cause it is bigger than a 1.5. I'm not really worried to much though I will get it in one way or another . I usually could care less about an air conditioner but after last years heat I am coming more prepared and plus it will keep the wife from b*tchin and whining the whole time about the heat.
i was thinking the same thing for the generator, wooden box with a few layers of goose feathers and some sort of exhaust. still a big undertaking but if i can run that thing in the morning to catch up on much needed sleep then i will be able to stay up later and thusly see more shows.
I think some of the bonnaroo veterans dont quite get my gripe. Last year was my first festival and apparently the hottest. I'm just kind of preparing for what i experienced last year
I also will be bringing the girl unit along so its for her as much as it is for me

Make sure hour Honda will start the AC unit before packing everything up in your car.
Also I would not make any box around any generator. They are air cooled not liquid cooled. Any box built around them will only cause them to run hotter and fail.
For future use..
To convert BTU to watts, multiply BTU X .293. 5000 X .293 = 1465 watts. That is the "running" amps. The starting amps will be about 3 times that, or about 36 amps to start.
From Honda's website: 120V 2000W max. (16.7A) 1600W rated (13.3A)
The best generator design I ever saw were the people who had hooked up a 10 foot exhaust pipe sticking straight up with a car muffler attached to the end. It was somewhat quieter, and at least the carbon monoxide was being dispersed a little safer. That is the biggest problem with having one at a car camp.

this scares me. the carbon monoxide aspect. last year we had to politely ask our neighbor to move their car a bit while sitting in it with the a/c running. their exhaust pipe was aimed directly at our shade tent under which we were trying to avoid the heat.
I was wondering how I was going to expand my carbon foot print this year! A/C in my tent so I can sleep a few extra hours, completely necessary!!! We can get all our generators together and have a generation circle on Sunday. I'll bring the barrels of fossil fuels!

I say hell yes put a box around the thing or even sound proof it. Just build a box, no top no bottom, and place it over your genie. Redirect the sound, up into the sky. Check out this website for "Generetiquette"

HaHa. If we do this, then many we see us as being a jerk and I think it should be advertised as the Sunday Morning Circle Jerk.
Yeah will def plug everything up before and check it, but my air conditioner puts out 5 amps and the generator puts out around 16, so I should be enough to start it and keep it running pretty easily. The vented box will have to be vented very well for air, I like what the guys above says about leaving the top off of it to direct the sound up.I will just have to make the side walls of the box pretty tall. And I will def be looking out for the people around me. I'm not going to stick the generator somewhere it could be putting carbon on anyone. I will find a safe place for it maybe between to parked cars, If there is no place I will not be hooking it up cause I do care about the people around me and will make sure of everyone's safety before my own luxury. From all the 6 years I have been and tent camped in GA we have always had lots of room cause I have lots of friends with me and we usually have 3 to 4 cars with us so Im sure there will be a safe place to put it.
This is also not just for me but for everyone in my camp. Its not just in my camping tent. We are going to tarp up an easy up with clear plastic so everyone can just bring in there air mattress and blankets to sleep neighbors are welcome to! If you see me there come hang out in the ac a while to cool off, especially if its as hot as it was last year.
Oh I'm going to deal with it. In the cold air conditioned tent Hey I have been through many bonnaroo's (6 to be exact) without ac. But you live and you learn and I cant afford an rv and I already for the most part have all the stuff lying around to do this so its not going to cost me much if anything. Whatever makes my experience better for me and my friends I will do. To each his own ya know.

If I knew how to get my hands on a solar powered generator I would be more than happy to. (if they even make those) Until then, I guess we just have to make due with what we've got.
I've got a friend that really wants to come to Roo with me this year, but she has fibromyalgia piled up onto a whole bunch of other health issues. She doesn't want to stay in a hotel b/c she says that she would miss out on the whole experience. She told me that if I could get this idea to work then she would come with me, and I really want her to experience all that is Bonnaroo, minus the heat to make it a little easier on her. Can't blame a girl for trying to help out a friend.
Also, if you're so worried about it being bad for the air and whatnot, why don't you try to come up with an alternate source of power that would be like a generator, but cleaner for our air?
If you do it, I will be the first in line to buy your product.
I actually came up with a design that used a stirling engine to turn a compressor in a cooler. I just think the mechanics of this are not being well thought out on here. First off you really are not going to be able to do just a tent, you are going to need two ezups with tarps around the edges and a intake vent. Otherwise you will only be pushing hot air around, even with tarps you are going to lose most of your cold air. Honestly people would be better off with a huge shop fan and a generator than an AC unit imo. If it was possible to do a good job with this, you would see a lot more of them out there.
Well at the very least I would try and set something up in my backyard before Bonnaroo once it gets hot to see if it would even be worth it. The civil engineers I work with are pretty doubtful that it would accomplish much. They were also the ones that said a fan would work as well or better, especially combined with a spray bottle so you can stay damp enough to use evaporative cooling.

I just use three battery powered fans and that works pretty good until about 8-9 am. Jess knows what he is talking about with the EZ ups and tarps. Also, if you can sleep outside in a hammock or whatnot, that keeps you way cooler too.

yeah I see what your saying wolfman. What i was going to do is put the unit on a little box to get it up off the ground and after I tarp up my ezups I was going to cut a hole in the tarp shaped like a window so the front of the ac is in the tent and the back is outside of the tent (just like a window unit in a house) so you get nothing but cold air. Also I want to double tarp everything and then seal the tent up with zip ties and ducktape. So it would basically be a window unit in a cut out tarp window if you can visualize what im saying. (Im not the best at explaining my self). Here at my work my office is a 12x12 and the 5000 btu puts out very very cold air. I know it wont work as good as my insulated office but it still has to work right? I have the mechanics worked out in my head. The only part of this system I dont have on me at the moment is the generator(my uncle uses it for his business), but I will be getting it from him a couple of weeks before roo and I am going to set this up in my back yard the weekend before and see if it works or what probs I will run into, but I'm pretty confident it will work with a little brain power and tlc. I am also going to use clear plastic to make the walls and seal up the tent so I can still see out of the ezup and I wont be shut off to the world. Anyone with good ideas chime in, I'm all ears!
