every one knows that its impossible to sleep after 8am because of the heat any way. As long as you don't run in though the night i don't see how it would be that much of a nuisance
Do you have a truck? You might want to think about building one of these, Hexayurt I know it is big, there are smaller designs. Cost is gonna be more than your average tent, but it is insulated. Anyways, check that site out some.
I have to say that is pretty cool and would work better than a ezup, but I pretty much already have everything I need for my way, but it does look pretty awesome and shady.
I see some cool air loss from leaks. If you only use duck tape and tarps and such, you will have leaks. Check out this tape, 6"bi filament tape. The 6 inches will hold your structure together better. It cost like $30 a roll, one roll should be enough and you will be happier for it.
I know you said you already have the tarps and easy-up and everything, but I still have to say...
For around $150 bucks you could build one of these.
The sun will heat up your tarp quickly, due to absorption of the sun rays into your structure, which in turn heats up the air with in that structure, in turn will even heat up the ground some. With the HY, the "tin foil" covering reflects the sun, this prevents the structure itself from heating up, in turn you have a small pocket of a cooler atmosphere, with in that structure. Since no heat gets to the ground under that structure, the ground tends to stay cool, like it was the night before. They are designed to be air tight , which they are, no loss of cool air from leaks. With this and your AC idea, it would be like Antarctica! But then you would have to worry about those pesky Penguins

We had clowns by us with an AC unit last year. Generator in GA = awesome. Not.
Don't be that guy.
edit: to those that think it's not a problem during the day probably haven't had to camp next to a set up like this. When you come back from half a day of shows for a sammitch and a cold brew and you have to hear that shit, it's really grating. Or when you can't hear your music over it. Or your conversation. Or say "hey, how was the show?!" to your neighbors. I understand wanting to be comfortable, but it's a fest. I can't imagine doing that to other people that've paid to be there.
Honestly, I think having air conditioning makes it harder to adapt to the heat quickly. Not to mention, this sounds like a lot of trouble for only 4 days. That's what I have to remind myself when planning my 'roo set up..."It's only 4 days, it's only 4 days, it's only 4 days..."
um ok? might want to read the whole thread before posting myscat!I guess I'm just going to try and ignore this thread since people just want to come on here and hate when they haven't even went through the thread before posting! This thread was made cause I guy wanted some ideas about how to make it work (not calling people clowns cause they want to do something that you don't like) I am going to do what I want and you are going to do what you want and there is nothing you can do to stop me and there is nothing I can do to stop you. Nothing you can say will change my mind! I know have -3 awesome points cause people dont like my idea of bring a generator.Hey I guess I will be -10 by the time we are done! Hey maybe even more! Sorry if this is coming off wrong my fingers just couldn't resist typing it.

Reading comprehension is your friend. I didn't call anyone who brings a generator a clown. I called the people I got stuck next to clowns because they were an inconsiderate and altogether rude bunch. I don't agree with generators in GA at festivals because it's not fair to those who have paid the same ticket price to have to put up with loud, smelly generators. But people who bring generators have also paid the same ticket price. So there's a struggle. Personally, I think it's selfish and altogether silly to bring a generator. Some don't feel that way. But I firmly believe there should be a separate section for people with generators so you can all listen to your generators drown each other out together. The point is this: Think of something that would really harsh your mellow. Then getting stuck next to it at Bonnaroo. It doesn't ruin your time, but it certainly doesn't seem nice. I try not to do things that would potentially do that to others. Because I care.

I have read this thread a couple times and I completely agree with the above statement. I would not want to be camped next to someone with a generator, plain and simple. That's all we are saying. Yes you are going to do what you want, you have made that clear. But just think if there are a lot of people on here that don't agree with running a generator then it's probably going to be the same way at Roo.
p.s. you can't start a thread and expect to not get negative feedback no matter what the topic.
Well I guess I understand your concern. Maybe they should make a generator only section, that would be nice. Like I said before I will running the honda eu generator witch is the quietest one they make plus a vented box on top of that. If it is still loud and I think it will be a pain to my neighbors I will not take it. when I hook it up in my backyard I can get a good check on everything and see how loud. I am not trying to ruin anyone's roo. Last year's heat was just plain awful. If it's like a regular bonnaroo temp like 86-92 degrees then I'm not even going to bring it, I'm only bringing it if the heat is like last year.

It's quite obvious you don't. It's June in Tennessee. It's going to be hotter than hell and you want to bring an AC and set up camp in GA. Sugarhigh is right, having it is only going to make it more difficult on you to adjust to the heat. Not to mention, you can build all the boxes you want around the thing, it's still probably going to be a pain in the ass to your neighbors. Roo is only 4 days, suck it up and deal with the heat.
a honda eu series generator puts out 49 -59 decibels. that is a very low noise factor considering a normal conversation level is around 60 decibels. combine a sound reducing enclosure and i doubt you would here it at all unless you are on top of it. this type of generator is made to not be heard. I'm sure this will go between a few cars or the center his camp. a box fan makes more noise than this series of generator. the exhaust can not even begin to compete with the vendor generators and the overpowering stench of low quality corn.

My neighbor had once of these last year. It was about four feet from my tent and I never heard or smelled the thing except for when he started it. He ran it for a few hours in the morning and said it brought him much relief. The heat doesn't really bother me that much but if you are going to bring a generator you would be doing everyone a favor by using one of these models.
so last year my neighbor made an air conditioner..its consisted of a cooler with dry ice and fans and a car battery..how this all worked im not sure bc im not a genius..however i do remember talks of solar panels and how it would work..idk? maybe someone will read this and get some great idea
I have owned quite a few generators over the year and did a lot of shopping around last year before settling on the Honda EU2000's. The Honda EU generators are by far the quietest generators you will find. They are the only generators (except maybe Yamaha EF's) that I would even begin to consider running in GA. Anything else will be too loud. Please take my word for it. Decibal ratings are relevant, but don't tell you enough about the sound. Sure conversation is higher decibal level, but conversation is intermittent. It's still going to be hard to talk over a lesser background decibal level from generators. Honda generator vs. all others is night vs. day in terms of sound. (That's why Honda is $1000 and others are $200).
That all said, you are going to need to build one well thought out structure for any of your plan to be worth it. You need to develop a detailed floor plan for your entire camping space, taking in mind that your perimeter could very well be occupied by people in tents, etc. My biggest recommendation would be to build a generator casing that redirects the exhaust straight up and you place this structure in the middle of your lot. (Honda generators blow out the side). Building a soundproofing case for a Honda generator is fairly pointless. And i wouldn't risk enclosing a $1000 generator and possibly damaging it.
Simply put, you will not be able to avoid pissing people off. Many people will not be ok with your plan regardless of how well thought out it is. But you can minimize the number of people you piss off by planning it well (like you are trying to do). Also, from day 1, talk to your neighbors, explain your setup, ask for concerns, invite them into the AC.
Lastly, the Honda EU2000's only hold enough gas to run an AC for 5-7 hours. So either turn it on with a full tank in the mid-AM, or plan to get up at 7am, spill gas on yourself, and be unable to fall back to sleep anyway.
All in all, you can accomplish your plan. But like many others have said, it's probably not worth it. The time and money spent are probably better used for renting a camping trailer with AC and going RV roo.
I have used a Honda EU2000i generator for the last four years. I can run two 5,000 Btu A/C units. each pull 4.9 amp. I always run after about 8:00 am. These generators are very quite. I put one A/C in a tent and one in my SUV.
And putting something up for privacy...and I've got a 2000/4000 MAX Inverter that may run a small 5000BTU a/c unit... I used it to run my fridge during Alabama's recent tornado apocalypse and I had a 47" LCD,and a bunch of crap going. I'll have to try this out first somehow but my other option is a generator. I saw this post on a website about A/C tents www.deltablues.net/camping2.html
That guy was using electrical H/U though but he's right on with the ventilation.
Or you could buy this for $79 and have a mini house!!
This thread is depressing. Please don't bring a generator into GA camping. Its called camping for a reason. I pity the people that can't go 4 days without air conditioning.
I am going to do what I want and you are going to do what you want and there is nothing you can do to stop me and there is nothing I can do to stop you.
You are exactly right! Yourself and others are free to do exactly whatever it is you want to do... On the flip side, your neighbors are free to deposit the spark plug into the nearest port-a-potty. Nothing can stop you... Nothing can stop them.

Sugar in the gas tank while they are gone works much better.
haha good thing It will locked up when I'm gone! I was putting up my ez-up in the yard last night and I'm having trouble with air leaks and I don't want to have to duck tape everything together cause I would have to throw it away after I'm done with it as much duck tape that it will need. It's looking like more trouble than it's worth. Look's like I will more than likely be taking battery powered fans instead but I'm still working on it. We will see!
Battery powered fans it is. Ac ez-up is to much to worry about. I'm sure some one could make it work but its not worth the trouble. I can't freakin wait guys. BONNAROOOOOOO! it's finaly almost here! See you guys at the farm and I wish everyone a happy roo.
Pretty sad when someone can't even have a discussion without being attacked like blink was in this thread. Some of the attitudes on this board are completely anti-Bonnaroo. Even when he was still considering the generator/AC, he was being more considerate than those of you who attacked him.

All you need to stay cool in camp is a shade tent/canopy. A water bottle mister of some sort, and just add ice to your bottle or make your mister bottle up the night before and put it in the cooler overnight and it'll be ready to use in the morning for spraying yourself to cool off.
This girl understands roo....any problems you encounter just requires a mental adjustment......deal with it.
Rick (fourth roo...1,2,9 and now 10)
PS: I camped last year next to a guy from Texas with a big ass truck...his engine was right next to my tent, and he would run the damn thing every morning while I was drinking my coffee....the heat from the engine ran me out....how to deal with it...DO NOT PUT UP CAMP NEXT TO AN ENGINE (car, truck or generator...they all produce heat).....lol
Hi, This is my first Bonnaroo this year. I camp with an AC unit in my tent a lot. I have the i1000 from honda and it will run my 5000btu ac unit, you just want to make sure the watage is below 450 on the AC unit and the i1000 will work. It is super quite and I ususaly run it on top of my car so there is no issue with exhaust. To be safe or to run other things you want the i2000 but the i1000 works for me if all I run is the AC. I don't think it will work in a large space with tarps, but it will cool a small tent. The sun adds a lot of heat, way more than an office so at best in the heat of the day the AC will only make it cooler but it will never catch up with noon sun beating down on the tent. It will work great in the shade or at night. You should plan on locking up your generator if you get a quiet one they are very expensive
That being said, because i have never been to bonnaroo i don't want to be the tool with the generator in tent camping. I am thinking about bringing it and not busting it out unless it gets really hot. I would only run it in the early morning hours for some extra sleep. I don't want to be un-green. It only burns about .5 gallons for 6 hours but still CO2 is CO2 in the air and I get that. Kind of missing the point to come to bonnaroo and burn gas to cool your tent. I don't know, I can't sleep in the heat but I don't want to look like a jerk either. Guess i will just see when i get there.
I think it really interesting to find all these ideas about cooloing yourself down but you should check out the tent cooling thread that is posted in the forum because I personally couldnt stand it when people were running there generators for more then a couple minutes (make coffee, make phone calls and such) but if your in ga your blowing carbon monoxide in everyones lungs and is that fair. Why cant you put all this effort towrds non-fueled means isnt that ultimatly what its about
