If you have NOT done VooDoo at least once...you really should!
I have not done ACL or SXSW yet...they are on my list. But I would NOT sacrifice VooDoo for either one. It is by far one of my favorite festies I have ever done and year in and year out for the money one of the BEST festivals I have ever been to! Catch the VooDoo rate at the Marriott Canal....and you WILL have a blast! NOLA anytime is awesome...but next to Mardis Gras...Halloween in NOLA is inexplicable! In a good way! LOL!
That night was infamous!! The dancing pig float and all the cool peeps on the street! New Orleans makes for a PERFECT after party.
Were you one of the guys with Jigawig during the Dead Kenny G's? Lovelucklaughter, her brother and I were hanging out with him and his friends for a good portion of that show. It was so weird. We randomly met him the night before and then ran into his crew on Frenchmen St. before the show.
yeah, that was me. We had a great time running into ya'll both nights. Hopefully again!
"The Battle of New Orleans", that was such a rough show!
Still can't believe I survived being in the front for that show.
Hahaha! nice dude, I heard people were gettin' crushed up there, hope it didn't happen to you. I missed Porcupine Tree that day because I lose my face too early and got stuck on hippie time and was late....boo.
I was in the photo pit for "Battle of New Orleans" and yes it was as bad as it has been portrayed.....people esp women getting crushed against the front barriers.....I was in the pit 45 mins before Rage took the stage....and at one point they brought in MOUNTED cops...with horses! I was then terrified of getting kicked in the head as I was shooting! Then finally the head of RATM security came out and took control of the sitch. He brought out about 5 of RATM personal security and he was ordering the volunteers around and telling them how to handle the crowd that was throwing crap into the pit and moshing into the pit.....we as photogs were told VERY clearly that we could have the half of the pit closest to the stage but security would be close to the crowd and if we drifted back we WOULD be thrown of of the festival for the rest of the weekend and our credentials taken away. I was pressed up against a speaker the whole time directly under Tom Morello. Got some good pix but it was the most insane shoot of my life!
"battle of new orleans" was such a riot (in a good way). i was about fifteenish rows back, and the crowd was just as rowdy back there as they were in the front. that was my first voodoo, and first visit to new orleans...ah, the memories.
can't wait for this year!!! i have a whole crew that will be coming with me this year.
Sounds awesome! We do need to plan an Inforoo meetup at some point....Old Absinthe House....any other suggestions welcome! I just LOVE NOLA and especially VooDoo! Let me know what y'all think! ;D
Hey BamaBelle, I'd love to see your pics from that show!! Link?
Were any of you up front for Jane's Addiction in 09? Seeing them was a dream of mine since the early 90's and they delivered! I was 2nd row center......that was probably the most intense concert experience of my life, in terms of that it was overwhelming to be THAT close.

Nothing beats Halloween in NOLA!
I was at that Jane's set. It was fun & a perfect Halloween setting, but for me it just didn't compare to the Jane's of old. Oh, well... reunions. I keep pulling for 'em though, and I agree with you about nuthing beatin NOLA!
Whoreshack- when did you see them? I've heard stories about there late 80's L.A shows.... had to be there!
That was my first Jane's show, and it was perfect....woulda rather had them tripped out than Perry falling down drunk, but there was no place else I would have rather been.
The first time I met miss Lucy was in 1997, and my buddy busted out Kettle Whistle and we listened to that CD for about 8 or 9 hours. Had been a Jane's fan since I was a little kid when my dad bought us Nothings Shocking, but that Kettle Whistle night was a defining moment in my life for sure- no getting off the bus after that!
Because of the photo releases we have to sign as press...I can't widely distribute photos. But send me a PM and I will send you a link to my Photo page...I AM allowed to use the photos I take as marketing for any future ventures!
Hey Roosters! Glad I found this thread Been thinking of ditching ACL (with it moving to September, it's gonna be too hot) and hitting up Voodoo this year! How fortuitous that an ACL v. Voodoo discussion was spawned here. Anyhow - I got on the mailing list i think for tix - I imagine the "pick" of hotels are gone at this point, but where should I be looking for lodging? Im a hotwire snob, so just give me the general area and I'll see what I can find. Im pretty excited about it! This will be fest #3 for me this year, and I <3 NO, so it's like win-win.

Actually I don't think the hotel specials have been posted yet...I check every other month or so. The "official" hotel is Marriot Canal and they usually do a VooDoo special room rate thing. I think last year it was $150 or $170 a night or something which is about half price off rack rate. VooDoo isn't like Jazz Fest where the hotels fill up that far in advance and you have two month lead times on cancellations and such. Much more laid back. You will LOVE it! ;D

Last year the Marriott Voodoo rate was $129+tax a night. The discount code/link usually goes up on the Voodoo site around when they start making announcements. In 2009 it was $99+tax, and in 2008 it was $125+tax. Here's hoping for another year like '09.
But regardless, for the money Marriott on Canal really IS the place to stay for Voodoo.

The French quarter is definitely the best area for hotels, a close second is the downtown/cbd. Those are the only 2 areas you should consider.
With that being said I have 2 extra rooms at the Holiday Inn Chateau Le Moyne (French Quarter) that I am selling for $119 per night (includes taxes!). I have the rooms from Friday oct 28 until check out on Monday oct 31. Those are the perfect dates for the festival. Email me at mbeethoven@live.com if you have any interest. I also have 2 three day passes if you want to talk about a room/ticket package. I guess I could do 2 three day passes and the room for $599. A sweethart deal for sure.
I know the Marriot will be HQ again...it has been for years. I'll wait til the code comes out probably in July.....and then you'd best book EARLY! They fill up fast! ;D

Thanx for the tips. See ya down there. Tell me more about this Old Absinthe House! I'm interested in people's fave 'Nawlins restaurants/bars. The city is full of hidden gems.
Accctually.....If you call the New Orleans Marriott (on Canal) directly, they are already taking reservations for the festival under the discount block. The rate this year is $149 (plus tax/tag/title). Just saying. I didn't want to miss out like I did last year so I've been calling the hotel directly since Mid-March checking for when they released the booking.

Any rumors on who will play this year? I have always wanted to do this but haven't ever had the opportunity. Last year I did Moog instead because it's so much closer. Is there a inforoo style thread for voodoo?
EDIT: I found them using Google. Still, I really want to go!
EDIT AGAIN: It looks like no one uses that site. Any rumors?

Now to just get tickets!!!!!
Thanks for the tip! I think I will be calling tomorrow! Like you said...it is too good a deal to miss out on!
Don't know about any rumors for Voodoo for this year..... I would def. expect Primus, maybe Ween again. Mars Volta. Soundgarden as a headliner is probably likely... I would expect one big jamband, maybe Furthur (fingerscrossed).
Don't blow your money staying at the Marriot. You can get a way cheaper place at the India House hostel off Canal street. It's not posh or anything, but its a psychedelic hostel full of weirdos and vagabonds that is a lot of fun.

Holy wow that's fantastic. At this point, I know It's gonna be me and a married couple. They'll need a room, as will I. So I'll have to get back to you on that one. Of course - dont hold it for me! if someone else needs it DO IT.
Im pretty pumped. the same 3 of us are going to Sasquatch in a couple weeks. After that, and then after their trip to Spain (luckies) then we'll be able to breathe and get this trip set up. WOO!

Awesome point for embracing being the third wheel! I've done that on many occasions with my multitudes of married friends. If you ever need a single festival friend, I'm always looking for new and fun experiences! I'm also gonna try to make it to Voodoo if the lineup is to my liking. I've seen all of the headliners at ACL, so even though I have lived in the area and still have many friends there, I just can't bring myself to bake in the sun for second showings. Plus, I've only been to NOLA once, and have been drying to go back for years now! Just need a good excuse.
