The weather at Coachella made a huge difference. We were actually a bit cold the first night this year. The two festivals are night and day as far as I'm concerned. Coachella has a much better environment, they have kick ass technology, there is noticeable art and you can listen to music open to close without dying. Bonnaroo has better music, is a better party and you might literally die if you try to listen to music from open to close. If I lived anywhere near Coachella I'd be there every year until I died. I think I have a shelf life at Bonnaroo, albeit quite a long one.
I'd say "better music" is subjective, but the overall atmosphere and openness of the environment is something Roo has on Coachella. That's subjective as well, but seems to be the general sense I get when talking to people.

I'm probably in the minority here but I think music is far less subjective than people assert. I think year over year the music at Bonnaroo is better in a non-subjective way. I also agree with your statement that the overall atmosphere is more open at Bonnaroo. That being said we met really cool people at Coachella and new almost nobody when we showed up.

So taste in music is no longer subjective?
lolok.
Come on now.
Yeah, I'm confused. We both listen to band "x", I hate them, but you love them. I'd assert this is a result of a different reaction to the same process in each of our brains.

There is actually a lot of scientific evidence that people hear music in similar ways and have similar reactions. I don't think it is ridiculous to suggest that objectivity in music or other forms of art exists. I know when something tastes like crap. Most people do. We can objectively analyze what we ate and why it tastes like crap. There is no reason I can't evaluate music in the same way. While music is an emotional experience it can be measured for quality, so can emotional health for that matter.

I feel like a lot of stuff is considered more subjective than it actually is, music in particular.
Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, of course, but that doesn't mean that some music can't be objectively and quantitatively better than other music.
The Rolling Stones are better than Creed. I doubt anyone here would debate that statement, and I feel like it can be empirically demonstrated that The Rolling Stones are better musically than Creed.
Of course, that's a pretty extreme statement, but if one band can be objectively better than another, then I think there is legitimacy for any argument about some music being "better" than other music. Clearly, in many cases it's not so clear-cut, thus the many debates we have here, and throughout the music world. The same thing applies to film.
Personal opinion comes into play through the music a person decides to listen to at any given time. Just because Band A is better than Band B doesn't mean that I can't like Band B more for intagibles or personal choice.

Please provide said evidence.
I personally find phish to be poop. Not to say they have no talent, or can't understand why others enjoy them, but for me they suck. That said, I saw them twice in 09 and understand how great of musicians they are. Does that mean, my brain can appreciate certain forms of music and not their's? Doesn't add up in my mind.
Since we are comparing line ups. For my taste, Coachella generally kills bonnaroo. I would say last year was debatable, though.

While I personally agree, I think an argument can be made. So allow me to play devils advocate:
The Rolling Stones, while amazing and having a huge impact on modern music, there is a legitimate argument that they took Black Music and repackaged it for white culture. Yes, it started prior to them, but Rock and Roll was born from blues and jazz. Their covers are an example of taking Black Music to the mainstream. Does this discredit them as artists or people? Hell no. Ray Charles covered tons of people.
I'd argue Creed is an extreme watered down product of the same product. Never the less, I doubt a die hard Creed fan, has any different reaction to their favorite Creed track than a Rolling Stones fan.
I'll produce a band list to back up this claim, but I got the same chemical reaction when I was 14 to Limp Bizkit, that I get to Sigur Rios today. While I find my tastes at 14 to be juvenile, does that mean my experience to music was any different?
Do we all not have a creed like guilty pleasure in our libraries'? (Mine include Lady Gaga, Dixie Chix, Ace of Base...)
Since what we are really talking about it quality I would read Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance, I think it is a pretty good read regarding subjective and objective analysis of quality.

While I have not read this particular book, I guess I will pose a simple question. Philosophically speaking, quality is easily defined?

I'll probably go back and reread the actual discussion eventually, but for the moment all I'm going to say is you are trying to argue there truly is "better" music out there, but then you back that up by saying Roo features that "better" music more than Coachella does.
You pretty much negate your entire theory right there. If any fest truly has "better" music, than Coachella hands down no question 'get off my front porch you damn idiots' is the festival with "better" music, But since we disagree on that I guess we can't both be right eh?
Unless you're willing to succeed my taste is better than yours and that you don't know anything about "better" music, then I gladly go along with that.

Yep. In what is probably the most obvious booking of the year, heh. Still excited though, I've never gotten the chance to see them. Sahara tent won't be a bad way to start...
