It was a little cooler at night but the heat coming up from the sand and the huge crowds made the days a lot more uncomfortable than Bonnaroo even if the real temperature was slightly less. Both were in the 90's though if I remember correctly. Not having any grass and dirt to absorb and not reflect the heat makes a big difference.
Hanout was hotter then bonnaroo I thought (which is crazy, but we got the dust instead)... Hopefully the weather is a little better.
I was fine during the day as long as I was on the sand. Made the heat so much more tolerable for some reason. I suppose it is because chilling in the sand near the Gulf during the summer feels natural to me. The only stage that was truly brutal during the afternoon was the uncovered concrete stage (grooveshark). I think it was Saturday we got there at 1:30 for JJ Grey and Mofro (I'm not a fan but my buddy was). Immediately standing on that black concrete my body hit the quack it button. I was fine once we got away from that stage.
Oh I dont know, it was pretty freakin' hot during the midafternoon on that main stage. Esp during Umphrey's... No breeze whatsoever! I love the beach and all, and I spend A LOT of time at the beach (from pensacola) and I was definitely sweating balls. Didnt stop the party, but definitely sweaty ballz. With that many people, the wind couldnt get past the folks closest to the water. No shade doesnt help either...

Yeah the sun reflecting off of the sand is really where the heat will sneak up on ya. That shiz is no joke!
Midday can get rough, but it's manageable. Especially if you have a condo nearby where you can duck out of the heat and into the AC for a few minutes.
Every hot ass festival would be more tolerable if you had a close condo with AC. However most people had to take the shuttles which was a pretty big clusterquack. Honestly Sunday at Hangout was as hot or hotter than any Bonnaroo I have ever been to.
I am thinking that I should scrounge up my old Tevas used for white water rafting or go shopping. I have always been a flip flop person- at Bonnaroo and other festivals. I have always been fine- birks, sanuk sandals, cheap flipflops- I have alternated between them and have always been a-ok. But those will not work in the sand, and I assume barefoot would just be a really bad idea. Ouch ouch hot!
Welcome back Bonz, but I do not find it strange that your presence being requested in the Orgy thread and then you showing up, like it was the quacking Bonzai Bat Signal.

That's obviously true, but most hot ass festivals don't have thousands of lodging options within walking distance. Even more within biking distance. In my opinion, that's one of the biggest advantages to Hangout. More people probably do take the shuttles, but there's at least several thousand people who don't need to. I probably wouldn't be as high on this festival if I didn't have a large enough group to make the nearby condos affordable.
Sunday did get pretty hot, though. It was pretty intense during Portugal. The Man right around noon.

I took my kids and camped at Gulf State Park, so going back and forth was not really an option. We left early Saturday after the Flips because my daughter was dying, and went in a little later Sunday so we could stay for Paul Simon.
It is a decent fest (logistical issues aside) if you have a Condo right there and AC, otherwise it is every bit as bad as Bonnaroo climate wise.

I know I'm the "I don't mind the heat at hangout" guy, but I think others will back me up in saying you'll want to be barefoot on the beach. otherwise it makes walking through the fine sand even more difficult.
so what you'll want are a comfortable pair of easily removed footwear: chacos, sandals, birks, tevas, etc. you'll need good thick soles for the concrete, and no shoes at all for the sand.
do make sure the sole of the shoe is thick enough to withstand the heat of the concrete though. I tried to wear vibrams one day and the heat pierced straight through to my feet.

This festival is a total God-send. After Bonnarroo in '04 I told myself that I'd never go to another festival (and haven't been since) unless I could afford an RV where I could sleep in peace...not wake up baking in a tent at 6am after falling asleep at 3 dehydrated as hell. (Or having the neighbors' fireworks firing directly at my tent in the middle of the night from 15 feet away while I'm faced) Throw in an actual condo AND a beach?? Nothing has had me so amped in a looooong time...
Thanks for bringing up the footwear issues...I wouldn't have pondered the importance of that without yall

Flip flops worked well for me last year. I wore cargo shorts everyday so I would just stick my flip-flops in one of the side pockets when it was time to go on the beach and then I would wear my flip-flops when we went to the 2 side stages, vendors, bathrooms etc.
As far as I remember the sand wasn't really hot on my feet or anything. Dancing in the sand all weekend will have your legs pretty tired by Sunday though.

Yeah I think making sure to take a couple rest stops during the day is a must. Last year we were practically running from stage to stage and all that walking in the sand and concrete shredded my knees. I plan to definitely make use of those hammocks this year, hopefully catch some string cheese while I swing with the breeze
Thanks for the info. I'll just stick with my regular fest shoe ware then. I can only imagine what dancing in the sand all weekend will do to my legs. I think leg workouts are in order in preparation!

If you don't mind being toward the back and you spread out, the heat is not too bad on the beach. If you want to get in as close as possible and pack it in toward the front of the stage, it will get hot.
They will hose you down at the water station, and that can help cool you off for a little while.
And I'm like postjack, I'm barefoot on the sand. Also, walking through the sand, can take it's toll on you. That's why I head to the asphalt when I switched between the two mainstages.
The first year, we brought a double-stroller because we had our 2 and 3 year old with us. That was a pain in the ass. Strollers suck in the sand. So do wagons. Last year, my wife opted out but I did take the 4 year old. No stroller that time.
This year, I have a ticket for my wife, but she's waffling on whether she wants to go or not. She's all about hanging out at the beach by the condo though, which is what she did last year.
I really hope they wise up and offer beach access during this years fest. That would alleviate a lot of the problems with heat if you are able to get in the water. There is no good reason to not allow it, you can get in the water at DeLuna fest 30 minutes away.
Another positive note is that in between bands at DeLuna, you can walk down the shore to the other stage, which wears down your legs like 1/5th as much as straight through the sand.

This would be awesome... If they can get the right police/lifeguard/ security force to effectively limit liability it could work. I would assume they would have to check wristbands upon re-entry to prevent people swimming into the fest.
It wasn't that hot.. I was comfortable the entire time.. Much more so than at Bonnaroo
I guess you and I are the exceptions. everyone else, including friends of mine, complained about the heat. I just drank plenty of water and lathered on the sunscreen every hour and was chillin out max and relaxin all cool.
I only went to Bonnaroo in 04 and it seemed a lot hotter there than both Hangouts. But then I'm a local.
DeLuna did not allow people to go swimming the first year. I think last year they just didn't have enough security to enforce no swimming. I think allowing people to get in the water would be a huge liability.

Yes, this would never happen. Even the most densely packed beaches in the world would be a cakewalk compared to a festival of this magnitude. Not only from a conventional lifesaving perspective, but add on top of that more intoxicated swimmers than you would see in a lifetime.
A drunk person just went to take a pee because the ocean was closer than the johns... and couldn't swim.
Plus, we don't want any turds on the ground where we're dancing
I think you guys are overthinking this. Not everyone will want to be in the water.
I was in the water both years of Deluna as well. We sat in the water and blasted off during f'n Willie Nelson. Last year I was in the water near a group of cops on ATVs dancing in the moonlight with Manta Ray's swimming around me during Jane's Addiction. I just did Widespread's Mexico run and I stayed in the water during every show.
It's really not that big of a liability. People that can't swim aren't going to be getting in the water.
Have lifeguards posted up, and have a buoy line out like 25 feet or so as the line for how far you can go out and it's not a problem. It's just stupid to let people swim out as far as they want right outside the festival but not inside. There are lifeguards outside of the festival site for that reason. People were falling out and the sun was getting to them because they coudn't get in the water.
If you prevented water access from the beach on a regular day, people wouldn't go.
The most appealing thing about music on the beach, to me, is being able to be in the water while it's going on. Nothing can beat being like shin deep in the water dancing around in the waves. NOTHING. (except having Mexican waiters bringing you fresh drinks while you are doing it)

I think they will find a way to have it.
I like this idea. I want to see Mexican waiters added to hangout!
