I honestly can't imagine a world where someone would actually rather see Trey than Jack White but that is just me. Jack is legendary material for me...nobody does what he does. he is direct and to the point...and he crushes....where I get bored watching Trey play 5000 notes. I can take a nap and come back 20 minutes later and he's playing the same thing.
Well you are living in it. I'd rather see Trey than Jack White. But that's one of the great things about music, everyone likes what they like. I'll make sure and stay to the back Friday night, so you have more room up front.

ill be honest i was borderline upset when jack white was named the last headliner. I figured they would go down the path of beach boys reunion or tom petty. But the more i check out his sets from this year this show has potential to blow minds. In fact i see several shows that i initialy over looked

Just go to the first weekend of Jazzfest, dawg.
I never got into DMB's stuff and the RHCP w/o John Frusciante is going to be meh (their new stuff kinda blows, amiright?), but Jack White is in his prime and will shred the gnar up in this mawfawkan beach.
Ahh ok. I would wager that 2 sets mean same day and 2 performances would mean different days. Their website says "2 sets" for hangout, but "3 performances" for electric forest. I think we will get both sets Saturday.

Is it really worth having a Trey vs. Jack argument? They are VERY different musicians. Your preference just comes down to taste and what you value in music.
I prefer Trey. Do I think he is better? What is better really?
They are both masters of the guitar. They both pour their heart and soul into their instrument.
I like listening to Jack, but Trey I have been listening to for a couple decades. Jack, I have not.
I could go to a friends house for dinner, and his full blooded 70 year old Sicilian grandmother could make some pasta sauce, and I would really like it. But I would still prefer my grandmother's I am sure. Its what I grew up with.

i can't believe you feel that way about rhcp's new stuff...i think its rad. still innovates on their old stuff but is definitely in the same style. i think they've done a masterful job and im super amped to see them
-When I Hear My Name -Dead Leaves and the Dirty Ground -Blue Orchid -Passive Manipulation -Red Rain -Death Letter -My Doorbell -Hotel Yorba -Same Boy You've Always Known -Lovesick -Little Ghost -We're Going to Be Friends -The Hardest Button to Button -Black Math -The Nurse -I Just Don't Know What to Do With Myself
Encore: -Ball and Biscuit -Seven Nation Army -Screwdriver
As a guitarist this is true. As a singer/sonngwriter it's the opposite.
I'll second that statement.
I'll strongly disagree.
I don't hate Jack White, but he's nowhere near Trey in any sense of the word. I love The White Stripes and The Raconteurs, but it's no comparison.
White's lyrics are riddled with cliches and all of his songs are told from the perspective of his gimmick. It's a simple formula and I'm not knocking it, but it's far from what I would call innovative.
Trey is an adventurous and ambitious songwriter that thinks outside of the box. He's not just some guy shredding a guitar over a bass line. Yes, Phish do write silly songs, but look at their output. With a catalog as vast and diverse as his, not every song can be the deepest most heartfelt song you've ever heard, and I don't think every song should be for that matter. And did I mention he's catchy too? Yeah.
Anyways, arguing music is "pointless" and "subjective," but so is arguing most anything. As long as we're no threatening to screw each others mothers, I think a little healthy debate is nothing to get stirred up over.
Jack doesn't even need a bass line or a traditionally skilled drummer to write classic songs. Some might call that an adventurous, even ambitious approach.

Not sure what you're implying here. Most songwriters write their songs before bringing them to the band and working out the arrangements. Trey is lucky to have an incredible band, but I don't think he "needs" them to write good songs. And that's coming from someone who thinks Trey is the third best member of P hish
If you're gonna compare Jack White with someone: Dan Auerbach. If you're gonna compare Trey with someone: Jimmy Herring. Take that mess to another thread though...create a poll, put phishy dix in2 your mouf, and have at it.

I know it will be a great show, I just kinda got burned out on 'em. Actually the only good thing about JF not being with them anymore...maybe we'll get a song from One Hot Minute? omg

I think the thread can handle a little healthy debate. Jack White writes catchy stripped down neo pop with a blues influence. Trey writes catchy full bodied Rock and Roll with a blues/psychedelic influence. Neither of them are great lyricists I mean sure Phish has some bad ones, but lets not pretend 7 Nation Army is poetry set to music or anything. As to guitar playing ability though Jack is completely destroyed by Trey.
I am not sure I follow your logic that you can only compare people to people similar to them however.
IRT Rbateman Because everyone's opinion is going to sway towards the music that they dig the most. We can sit here all week coming up with a list of folks that destroy both of them in terms of guitar playing ability: Carlos Santana, Jeff Beck, Al Di Meola, Buddy Guy, weenie Dale, Steve Vai, etc. Including some that you may not have evern heard of or seen play: Tosin Abasi, Paul Waggoner, etc. Does that matter? Like at all? Dweezil Zappa is a better guitarist than his father was, but he (nor anyone else for that matter) will ever write music that was as innovative as Frank's. Neither Trey or Jack are breaking the mold when it comes to writing music. They are both obviously borrowing from others, but I think Jack writes much more entertaining songs than Trey. And a much higher percentage of his music doesn't bore the poop out of me. I think Buzz Osborne said it best: in order to make a perfect song, “you have to be able to hide what you’re stealing from really well.” Neither Trey nor Jack are doing that very well, so to sit here and argue about which one's poop smells more like flowers is kinda ludicrous, amirite?
IRT Rbateman Dweezil Zappa is a better guitarist than his father was
No way. I disagree with this statement more than I disagree with anything on this board.
Frank Zappa is the greatest TECHNICAL guitar player that ever lived. He does some weird sh*t sometimes, but nobody can do what he does to a guitar including all those guys you just listed and Trey and Jack.

Way to take my words out of context...did you even read my whole post? Rbateman turned this into a debate about "guitar playing skill" in addition to "song writing skill" and I was in no way saying that anyone is a better musician/songwriter than Frank. Better technical skill doesn't give you the right to claim they're a better musician if they can't produce innovative music, but you could certainly say they are better at playing guitar. And that was the point that I was trying to make with Trey and Jack...they're building off other people's styles too only it's not quite as obvious as someone doing covers like Dweezil....even if those covers are tighter than the originals.
