IRT Rbateman Because everyone's opinion is going to sway towards the music that they dig the most. We can sit here all week coming up with a list of folks that destroy both of them in terms of guitar playing ability: Carlos Santana, Jeff Beck, Al Di Meola, Buddy Guy, weenie Dale, Steve Vai, etc. Including some that you may not have evern heard of or seen play: Tosin Abasi, Paul Waggoner, etc. Does that matter? Like at all? Dweezil Zappa is a better guitarist than his father was, but he (nor anyone else for that matter) will ever write music that was as innovative as Frank's. Neither Trey or Jack are breaking the mold when it comes to writing music. They are both obviously borrowing from others, but I think Jack writes much more entertaining songs than Trey. And a much higher percentage of his music doesn't bore the poop out of me. I think Buzz Osborne said it best: in order to make a perfect song, “you have to be able to hide what you’re stealing from really well.” Neither Trey nor Jack are doing that very well, so to sit here and argue about which one's poop smells more like flowers is kinda ludicrous, amirite?
I pretty much feel the opposite most of Jacks output is pretty boring to me, and I saw the Stripes at Bonnaroo, and the surprise show at a local club. To me the output of TAB, and Phish, and especially the live experience is much different. Jack sounds like his albums all the time, at least Trey/Phish can mix up the live show to make it something special every time.
No way. I disagree with this statement more than I disagree with anything on this board.
Frank Zappa is the greatest TECHNICAL guitar player that ever lived. He does some weird sh*t sometimes, but nobody can do what he does to a guitar including all those guys you just listed and Trey and Jack.
Way to take my words out of context...did you even read my whole post? Rbateman turned this into a debate about "guitar playing skill" in addition to "song writing skill" and I was in no way saying that anyone is a better musician/songwriter than Frank. Better technical skill doesn't give you the right to claim they're a better musician if they can't produce innovative music, but you could certainly say they are better at playing guitar. And that was the point that I was trying to make with Trey and Jack...they're building off other people's styles too only it's not quite as obvious as someone doing covers like Dweezil....even if those covers are tighter than the originals.
And I am saying that Dweezil Zappa exceeds his father in no ways. Frank is tighter, more creative, and just all around better in every way.
Again, you are not comprehending what I meant. I was trying to infer that Dweezil is a virtuoso like a Steve Via that can pretty much play anything now. I was in no way trying to say that he is better than frank as a musician in any way (other than he can play do some poop on the guitar that Frank couldn't [and I gave a rant proceeding that stated, in summation: "what the quack does that matter?"]). Also, Dweezil doesn't wear a mustache...I've never seen him with one.
What are the hetti wooks even doing up in this thread? Are y'all going to this fest just for the cheese? Or are you just trollin'?
Dweezil's never had a mustache. I told him he should one time though. I don't think he wants to appear too gimmicky. He's content with being super-ripped I guess.
Hangout is gonna rule....... String Cheese Jack White Steve Winwood Gogol Bordello Shpongle Alabama Shakes Flaming Lips Julian Marley UM Coheed Dr. Dog Big Freedia Random other bands I'm gonna have a good time at.....

LOL at people who think Dweezil is a better guitar player than Frank, no wonder you think Jack is better than Trey. How do you feel about the songwriting of the Wallflowers vs Bob Dylan?

Dweezil is a way better guitar player than Frank. You do know Frank played with two finger style right? Also known as "poser style". A lot of what you hear on albums wasn't Frank playing. FZ was a master shredder, but he was not a virtuoso. Dweezil learned from Frank, Steve Vai and Eddie Van Halen as a kid. FZ taught himself.
Look up early 80's FZ releases and you will see that Steve Vai is listed as "Stunt Guitar". His role in the band was to play "impossible" parts. Songs like Moggio, Alien Orifice, Drowning Witch were written for players better than FZ to pull off.
FZ is the all time most innovative musician imo, and is one of the greatest, most original guitar players of all time. Dweezil fuckin' shreds out of control though.
If you want to "see" FZ play, see Ike Willis and Andre w/ Project/Object, they play more like FZ. Dweezil is a better pure guitar player.
IRT Pbateman Did I say Jack was better than Trey? No...I said I like his music more and that the comparison is only a matter of opinion. (It just so happens that the majority of opinions are in agreement with me) Did I say Dweezil was better than Frank? No...I said he is a better guitarist in the sense that he has the skill to play anything (which Frank didn't [even though he is my favorite musician of all time]). It was you who brought up the points of guitar 'playing skill' vs 'songwriting skill' and now you are blurring the line between those two comparisons just to try to make me look like an ass? Wooks be trippin' up in hurrr
Who can space your face more though? The virtuoso or the MOTHER? All subjective. I've had my face stolen by mofos that can just play a badass guitar, and also by wizards like Vai and Herring.

didn't mean to ignite a shitbomb then leave...but since we're all here, there's one more secret i feel i have to share with you -- i did not care for the godfather.

Okay guys, the mustache comment was a joke.
Anyways, I am not talking about your "larger" point about the subjectivity of creativity. No matter how much you return to that, it has nothing to do with what I'm saying.
I am talking about the idea that Dweezil (or Vai, or anyone for that matter) could pull of anything Frank could not. I don't care what you read in a book, go listen to his music. Go watch videos of him playing guitar. He is, simply put, the most skilled guitar player to ever live.
If it makes me a wookie to know what I'm talking about because I listen to his music, then I guess I am man.
Anyway, it's funny that this degenerated from you trying to explain the trivialities of arguing, to you trolling us by calling us names based on the fact that we like the band Phish.

would be a perfect cherry on top if we got any of the following....warren , k.r.i.t , zach deputy , maynard, keller, tenacious d. maybe one wild card ( 311, yonder , ...

See, I can't agree with that. I think he was the best composer/performer and was a hell of a guitar player that influenced many guitar players that eventually surpassed him in that one particular skill. And just because there are more highly skilled guitar players today obviously doesn't mean they are better songwriters or performers. I wasn't trying to be derogatory in my previous posts, they were in jest. Sometimes sniggas need to get hit in the head with a hammer nowadays to listen. I wasn't trying to change your opinion on anything either, I was just trying to clarify mine.
I have forgotten, are we expecting more additions and if so, how many?
Some people are saying we have one more big announcement, but that is just a rumor. I am expecting the schedule soon, so it wouldn't surprise me if this was it.

They released the daily breakdown on 3/31 last year, but the full schedule didn't come out until a few weeks after that. That's also when they added Motorhead and Justin Townes Earle.
There are 52 announced artists right now, not counting the kids stage performers. Last year there were 55 artists, so I wouldn't expect much more. I'm guessing they do it like they did last year, with a daily breakdown coming soon and a final schedule dropping by the end of the month.
Hell yea on Scofield!! Saw MMSW @ Bear Creek last year.... my face was melted 100%.........then I went to Lettuce>Trey immediately afterwards, what an awesome night.

here's to hoping we dont get any ridiculous hellacious heat shows. Medeski...umphreys. please hangout look at the bands people are excited to see and schedule them later in the day!
Condos are pricey and you really need to split one between some other folks. The good ones get booked way in advance. It all depends on how close you want to be to the festival and how much you're willing to spend...the shuttle pass does take you to and from most all of the condos along the beach though. It's not difficult to find parking within' walking distance of the festival, so if you don't mind driving to and from the fest a little ways, you can certainly find a cheaper hotel/motel up the road somewhere, which is the option that I would go with if you are traveling by yourself and can't find folks to split a condo.
I've got everything but a hotel/condo squared away for Hangout. Any recommendations on places this late in the game?
TIA.
I didn't know I was going in 2010 until mid April, and the only reasonably priced place I could find was the Country Hearth Inn. It was ~5mi away, but only 1.5mi from a shuttle stop. I'd recommend looking for a hotel along a shuttle line unless you have a big enough crew that splitting a condo through VRBO is an option.
It's probably going to get harder to score a good condo every year because many people are just going to request to keep their same one or try to get a better one for the next year.
