how do you begin to grapple with the fact that you need to quit your job and move?
Like, yeah I've moved for jobs before but this time it feels so different.
it sounds like you're at your breaking point with your unhappiness, and that's kinda good, in a way. you're ready to move.
here's what to do next: make a plan, and work hard toward it.
i've moved out of state and completely started from scratch bc i hit that breaking point in my life where i knew it was time. had to do it. i'm so proud of that person that did that. looking back, it was so hard, but it was something not only i wanted but needed.
here's how i approached it: -picked a handful of cities that met various criteria for me personally (queer friendly, weather climate i found appealing, walkability, had professional soccer teams) this narrowed down the list pretty easily -applied to jobs every single day after work for 2 hours a day -just went with the flow and let it all happen -this is gonna sound woo-woo, but i followed the signs. for me- Portland legit just started haunting me in various signs from the universe, so that just made it feel right for me

For me the cities that just FEEL RIGHT are NYC, Denver and the Twin Cities

Ain't woo woo at all. All about the vibes
I would never discourage anyone from living in NYC because I love it here, but if the cost of going places/doing things is something that bums you out about Atlanta, I have bad news about my fair city. You cannot beat the energy here but it is essentially a giant vacuum created to hoover absolutely all your money away, and it keeps getting worse...so, you know, just be prepared for that.
On the other hand, you get double digit chances to see LCD Soundsystem live every year, so, you know, pluses and minuses.

The cost doesn't bum me out about Atlanta necessarily, it's moreso the lack of ability.
Everything feels out of reach here, and it doesn't in NYC.
And the Uber to Hartsfield was literally as much as my entire transportation cost in NYC. For 5 days.
ok just heard this hypothetical question on The Watch end of the year pod and thought it was interesting.
You have been hired to be a lighthouse keeper for a year. you will spend that year in solitude. you have no internet, but you can choose one of the following two options:
A) 50 books of your choosing
or
B) all the content of one video streaming service of your choosing, preloaded. so it's just what they have on there right now, no new releases during your year of solitude.
which do you choose? and if it's B what streaming service do you choose?
so basically copying what they said on the pod i got this from. i'd love to think of myself as an A) person, like wow, a year of solitude and the chance to catch up on all these books, to really unplug and better myself. but the truth is i'd choose B) and probably netflix just because the library is so massive plus old hbo stuff.

I like using public transit.
point against denver then, our public transit is kinda mid
It feels like life is pushing you in this direction already, you know? You have this opportunity for a big adventure. Even though pain is what's pushing you there. (It's usually pain that pushes us to adventure anyway)

A, believe it or not I read more than I watch TV or play video games.
EDIT: Honestly 50 books isn't enough. I can read a book in a day. So I changed my mind to B.
1. when you say move do you mean to a different job, different home, or different city altogether?
2. why do you need to quit job/move?
3. what feels different this time?
I have zero incentive to do well; even when I do everything right I assume I'll get a teams message telling me I did something wrong with no guidance on how to do better.
My boss has zero life and is constantly looking over my shoulder even when he's not "on shift." He'll leave at six but I'll still get teams messages from him at 11. Again, no incentive to do well outside of my own satisfaction.
this happened FUCKING AGAIN
I do everything right, get the push out in a timely manner, get the social out fast, get the story right, fucking track down the flight that crashed within 10 minutes and THIS MAN STILL FOUND A DAMN WAY

Ellie that just sounds like a terrible atmosphere, I hope you're able to figure out your next steps and get into a better environment ASAP!
3post1jack1 I think you'll appreciate this the most, but my neighbor just delivered a mason jar filled with her brother's Apple Pie all the way from West Virginia (close enough, right?). I asked her if the glass was poisoned but she didn't get my reference.

I’m with you here. In “the real world”, I read maybe a book a month because there are so many distractions. In this scenario, I would easily read a book a day and get bored after a month and a half. Maybe I could finally finish The Sopranos!

One thing to remember with the lighthouse keeper gig is you probably would have some kind of lighthouse keeping duties to perform each day. Nothing hard but enough to keep you occupied for a bit. Also you can go outside and look at the waves and stuff. So it's not like you're in prison.

My feeling is that with the streaming service, I could easily get sucked into just watching shit during all my downtime. I would be so incredibly bored of it, but I would also still probably just watch it anyway, with a feeling that I was just throwing away so much time. With the books, I would read until I was tired of reading, and then I would figure out other ways of filling my time, even if that was just watching the water, which is actually something I love doing and can be meditative and refreshing instead of soul sucking like watching television I don’t actually want to be watching.

i was actually thinking about this in the shower this morning lol
like, you live alone right? you'll be busy- lighthouse duties plus
cooking, gardening, nature stuff
for me a book is more consuming and provides a better way to escape and i could read outside on nice days etc
plus maybe i'd get some nature guides and fermenting or baking books tossed in there

WARNING: long-winded blowhard making a long post.
Sounds like time to think about moving on (you are, clearly). Whether you do or not is a tough decision that only you can make. If you do, is a move to a far away city necessary, or would that be a geographic solution for a problem that is mainly just the job?
I had a job like that a few years ago. There were red flags from day one and I had 6-7 bosses in 9 months, and the last two were fired within months of me leaving. The owners and corporate folks loved me but my direct supervisors were all widely believed to be incompetent. The last district manager was a whiny manipulator, but very bad at manipulating people - everyone was wise to her fake empathy and self-centered BS. Her boss, who I dealt with much more than her, was one of the sleaziest scumbags I've run across, and kept asking about things we hadn't gone over, rarely showed up when he said we'd meet, and always claimed to have plans for everything that he couldn't articulate and that never materialized.
After 9 months and being blindsided by an announcement by the big boss in a meeting with my staff (he said I was "stepping aside" to focus on something else, which we'd only talked about once in principle, and which was supposed to be a promotion, then introduced my replacement), I quit. I finally said screw it, I can pay my bills without working for a while or get an equally thankless job in a heartbeat, so I brought a resignation letter with two weeks notice the next day. The owner was pissed and tried to smooth things over but I gave him all the reasons I was leaving and declined offers for other positions at other locations. My "replacement" gave two weeks notice before I even left, after seeing how other parts of the company operated, and the company is barely surviving today.
After that, I took some time off and DoorDashed part time for a few weeks. Then I got an offer from someone I'd done business with before and ended up changing fields completely, and things have been good since. After kicking myself in the butt, and being patient waiting for what felt like the right opportunity, I now have a five minute commute from home, a much better working environment, no one breathing down my neck no matter what I do, and no more 70-hour weeks without days off.
I guess my thought is to know when to move on, force yourself to do it (if that's what you want, as uncomfortable as that can be), and to think through the possible scenarios that can play out. I was happy in the end to not uproot myself and move, although I considered it, and it turned out that getting rid of the a-holes and striking a better life-work balance made my life drastically better. So I'd say be bold and put your well-being first, but maybe that just means a new job or field and not completely starting over somewhere else. In any case, as hopeless as it may seem at times, things CAN get better if and when you decide what your biggest headache is, then decide how to remedy that problem, without trying to fix every single thing all at once. A job needn't define you, but a bad one can absolutely make you miserable outside the office.
Definitely streaming. I would need to hear human voices
That was my first thought - I'd like having books to read but they're way too quiet, and I'd want to hear from people, even if we weren't interacting. I've been digging Max but I'd probably go with netflix just due to the vast and diverse catalog, most of which I haven't watched due to not having subscribed in a few years.
1. First Concert – Snow Patrol @ Westpac Arena in Christchurch, NZ 2. Last Concert – Finom (fka Ohmme) & the New Pornos @ The Showbox 3. Worst Concert – Lane 8 live @ the Showbox (This was the first and only show I've ever walked into, gotten a drink, listened, looked around, laughed, chugged my drink, and walked out within about 8 minutes.) 4. Loudest Concert – Protomartyr @ the 7th Street Entry 5. Best Concert – Probably in the pit for Spoon @ 'Roo as a pre-headliner, absolutely baking in the sun. edit: Andrew Bird > Neutral Milk Hotel > Kanye > Disclosure > Chance The Rapper in 2014 was one of the most ridiculous evenings of my musical life thus far (here's to you drugs, you changed me for weirder and for always) 6. Seen The Most – Bully, surprisingly 7. Most Surprising – Carly Rae Jepsen @ the Iowa State Fair the summer after Call Me Maybe with a couple thousand pre-teen/teenage girls, wondering what on earth I was doing there and inadvertently allowing it to change my entire perception of what pop music was and then now seeing her 3 additional times as an adult 8. Happy I Got To See – Paul McCartney @ 'Roo 9. Wish I Could Have Seen – Daft Punk, particularly pre-R.A.M., specifically 2007.. 10. Seeing Next – Barry Can't Swim @ Neumos
4. Loudest Concert – Protomartyr @ the 7th Street Entry
Unless they played at The Entry multiple times, I was at this show too. I don’t remember it being loud though. Gawd I love The Entry, it’s my favorite venue.

Seeing Protomartyr at the Entry was the first time I had sincerely thought, without fear of judgement, "Man, I guess I should start wearing earplugs." I also had a tendency to stand way too close to the speakers at the time... Wild that we were almost certainly at the same show all those years ago though!
And goddamn same man, The Entry is the perfect small venue.

I'd be willing to tolerate this job more if I liked it here in Atlanta.
