Edit: Our friends' crazyass marching band, who we roomed with at The Galt, got a nice write-up from COS in this piece. I'd love to get them down to Roo for some mobile performance art along with the MMJ monsterpuppets.
I'll say this, I can't remember the last time I was that blown away by a show. It was over the top amazing. Like for realz. The crowd, the covers and the set list. It was pretty much a perfect show.

After reading this review I can understand why you are all saying that. The covers that were played = awesome. The former band members joining in and old songs being dusted off again.....truly sounds amazing. I love the "Curation series" that MMJ is doing. It's awesome.
Louisville, KY hosted the 10th annual Forecastle Festival this past weekend. As the festival entered its second decade, it expanded its scope by partnering with Bonnaroo co-founders AC Entertainment and bringing hometown heroes My Morning Jacket on to headline and help curate. The festival’s diverse lineup included co-headliners Bassnectar and Wilco as well as Girl Talk, Andrew Bird, Sleigh Bells, Atmosphere, Neko Case, Clutch, A-Trak, Galactic, Flying Lotus, Beach House, The Head and the Heart, Stax! Soul Revue, Dr. Dog, Deer Tick, Preservation Hall Jazz Band, Charles Bradley & His Extraordinaires, Beats Antique, Real Estate and Galactic, among others.
Part of the fan-powered The Spontaneous Curation Series, My Morning Jacket allowed fans to help choose the setlist for their headlining show on Saturday. Despite playing for their biggest hometown crowd yet, MMJ used the requests—which were sent in via Twitter—to perform several rarely played covers and forgotten originals. The group opened their show with the seldom played “The Dark,” from the band’s 1999 debut The Tennessee Fire, and then brought out Preservation Hall Jazz Band “Holdin On To Black Metal.” Soon after, MMJ invited out Luna/Galaxie 500’s Dean Wareham for the band’s first-known take on “Isn’t It A Pity,” and brought back few covers the group has not performed since they ripped through most of their catalog at New York’s Terminal 5 in October of 2010: Elton John’s “Rocket Man,” The Band’s “It Makes No Difference” and George Michael’s “Careless Whisper.” A few other guests sat in, too: Former member Johnny Quaid, who played guitar with the group from 1998-2004, appeared on “Run Thru” and a show-closing “One Big Holiday” while Andrew Bird made a guest appearance on “Gideon.” Rare originals songs like “The Bear” and “Cobra” showed the depth of Jacket’s repertoire. A few fans were also treated to a short semi-private soundcheck performance by My Morning Jacket earlier in the day.
MMJ’s Jim James stopped by Preservation Hall Jazz Band’s set to play a few song both at the festival and on-board the Belle of Louisville steamboat along the Ohio River later in the night. James sang with Preservation Hall Jazz Band on “Louisiana Fairytale, “Blue Yodel,” “St. James Infirmary,” “Highly Suspicious” and “Carnival Time” during the late night set, with other members of MMJ sitting in at various points as well.
Likewise, Wilco brought out some special guests and celebrated a national treasure during their headlining performance last night. During “Handshake NO NO WORD!!! ”Tim Barnes, who augmented the band on the 2004 studio album A Ghost Is Born, played percussion. The band also sang “Happy Birthday” to Woody Guthrie, who celebrated his centennial on Saturday, before “A Shot In The Arm.” Meanwhile, rising indie-jam group Real Estate also got into the interactive spirit by passing out beach balls and starting a beach party during their short performance.

Best Sets...
Charles Bradley (Nuthin' but Love) MMJ (Anti-soundcheck and Non-cruising boat sets were also wonderful) Wilco (Jeff's shout-out to LLL was perfect) Cloud Nothings (My voice is shot from screaming along) Dean Wareham/ Dean & Britta (Both great sets from a genuinely nice guy) Purity Ring, kickoff party (Short and so sweet) Galactic Abagail Washburn Dr Dog Daedalus M. Doughty
I really didn't see a bad set all weekend. Just tons of fun. Glad to see so many smiling, drunken infofaces out there, everywhere I went.
We're all a mess of paradoxes. Believing in things we know can't be true. We walk around carrying feelings too complicated and contradictory to express. But when it all becomes too big, and words aren't enough to help get it all out, there's always music.

NOD, nobody showed to Dean's first set Thurs eve with Purity Ring. Well, except MMJ. They were obviously big fans. Carl got up and played sax and I swear no one recognized him. I ran into Dean so many times over the course of the weekend I asked him to stop stalking me.

Amazing weekend. It was great hanging out with most of you.
Liked the closeness of the stages as I was able to bounce around to alot of shows and get good spots or rail despite being late. I got to meet Ashley Capps and a lot of the artists in the VIP area or just walking around the fest so that was nice.
Charles Bradley was definitely up there with MMJ and Wilco. I don't think there is an artist/band out there that enjoys performing more than Charles. Glad I got to hug him before the security had to force him out of the front of the stage.
Hoping they bring Forecastle back next year.
Favorites of the full sets I saw: MMJ/Charles Bradley/Wilco Flying Lotus/Dr.Dog Tanlines/Beach House/Cloud Nothings

The best thing about Charles' set, besides the James Brown cover and the sweaty, post-show hugs for everyone, was when he noticed Bacon glued to the rail and serenaded him with "Heart of Gold."
LLL had a sign that said "Marry me Pat". Tweedy saw it and said "First of all my name is Jeff and second I am already married". It was amazing
It really WAS amazing! That sign...that moment...that entire show was just one of the many amazing highlights from last weekend.
I'm de-lurking because there's simply too much good stuff from this festival that wouldn't be possible without so many of y'all! WOW.
I was dreading going to a fest when I've been too preoccupied w/life stress...turns out, it was EXACTLY what I needed! Great times with the greatest friends a person could be lucky enough to know - that's what it's all about!
THANK YOU to MikeD & Popsicle Sarah for telling me about this & getting tickets! That stormy MMJ acoustic soundcheck under the bridge is something I will never forget!
Thanks to Phi, SFA & RDK for risking your lives as my passengers on the road trip!
Thanks to everyone whose company at the shows & in the crazy after-parties in our room made the weekend a mind-blowing success, including: BACON!!! (who has a magical way of appearing wherever I went, much to Bonzai's jealous chagrin! ), Dave & Abra, LLL & SFA, willsfc, HandgunHipster (who I only saw for a few seconds, but yay for that!) Karosko, Lowerdeck, KrunchyKat, easymorningrebel, Whoreshack, SouthGA_FestivalMachine (ahhh, Dale!), iSkew, Sassbox!, and Gibran...
Y'all mean the world to me & I can't wait to see many of you again soon @ MikeD's, Newport & Moog!

Took me a few days to recover and get back on here, but my wife and I had a heck of a fun weekend in Louisville. If MMJ headlines again next year, we've already determined we'll be back. I loved the musical offerings: Highlights for me included The Head and the Heart, Andrew Bird, Dr. Dog, Justin Townes Earle, Flying Lotus and, of course, MMJ. That MMJ set was incredible from start to finish, with great sit ins, an awesome setlist and a ton of energy. I was jumping up and down during the full Run Thru! As for the festival itself, I thought everyone was overwhelmingly nice, and I appreciated the fact they had people fill up your water bottle/camel back for you. Being able to wade in the little stream with the tiny falls was a plus too (Anyone see the beware of hydrogen sign We also ate at some great BBQ places over the weekend (Doc Crow's and Against the Grain, which had some good beer offerings). My only complaint, and it's minor, is there was some significant sound bleed from some of the stages. There were a few times we had to wade into the crowd, center stage, just to get away from the music coming from elsewhere. Still, that's a pretty minor concern. Overall, kudos to Forecastle.

Had a blast in Louisville. Seriously awesome city and this was a great festival. Thanks to everyone who I got to hang out with on Saturday: Abra and Dave, RDK, Whoreshack, Mike D & Sara, Lowerdeck, willsfc, Phi, Krunchykat, easymorningrebel ("The Pizza Guy"), etc etc etc. Had a great time.
The Jacket show was the best Jacket show I've seen in a landslide. Downright amazing setlist.
Without a doubt, the best festival I've ever been to. It's going to take some time for me to adjust back to reality. Had trouble cutting off the wristbands. That's how you know the weekend was something special. Louisville really blew me away. Can't gush about this weekend enough.
- sound-bleed = yes. But for no more than a two-minute walk between every stage? A trade-off I'll gladly take. - loved the fountain that ran through the fest and how laxily-enforced the "no swimming" policy was - LOVED the waterfront walk to and from the fest every night. Just beautiful. - LOVED the convention for the blind going on at the Galt House. Made the elevators a place to avoid, but interacting with the blind all weekend was truly inspirational. - loved EVERYONE'S attitude. Encountered nary a bad vibe all weekend. Actually, one guy bodychecked me while I was carrying two beers. That sucked. But I had to think hard about that. - loved how Louisville-centric it was. I felt genuine pride to be part of an event in a city I'd never even been to before - MMJ soundcheck = wow - MMJ set = WOW - MMJ boat show = HOLY quacking HELL - Floating Action = best kept secret of the weekend - Wilco = those boys can put on a show!
