Our good friend Endswell at The High Definite was recently doing some research on The Wire, because it’s your loss if you’re on the internet and not researching The Wire. Here’s some insight into his discovery that some of you may already be aware of but I wasn’t and it’s Friday so back off.
“While looking for a clip from The Wire to reference in the Burner app post (because you pretty much have to), I stumbled onto this video of an individual calling Marlo Stanfield’s phone number as he states it in a meeting with his lawyer, Maurice Levy.”
The video has been on YouTube since December and pretty masterfully lays out how how the whole thing works: Call the Baltimore number Marlo gives Maurice Levy in the first scene (410.915.0909) and you get a recording of the “My name is my name!” jail cell scene between Marlo and his crew. It’s all pretty great and still works years today, four plus years later.
I like to think of it as just another creative way to give the finger to all those weak ass shows that use “555″ and get nominated fore Emmys.
Finally got around to watching this show. Finished first season last night.
All I can say is I am very happy I finally gave up streaming shows and picked up torrenting. I've tried watching The Wire before, but the streaming was always lowsy, and it's 10X worse here in Asia. Anyway- very glad that I can watch this show now because it is awesome.

I need advice inforoo.
Regarding: Getting Loved Ones To Watch The Wire
So my long-time GF and I love to watch good TV shows. Who doesn't amirite? We have watched and enjoyed together a plethora of the greats: Lost, Battlestar Galactica, Dexter, Mad Men, Breaking Bad, Boardwalk, True Blood (last season sucked though), American Horror Story, etc.
But without a doubt the show I feel the most passionate about is The Wire. It is the best television show I have ever seen, so naturally I want to share this with my wonderful GF who appreciates great television.
But a strange thing happened when I first introduced my GF to The Wire almost three years ago now. About 45 minutes into the first episode of season one she just said "I don't like this, can we turn it off?" I was flabbergasted. She has never done this for any other show. We had an argument about it. Like, for real. Our fights are pretty tame, we never yell or anything, but we have disagreements, and this was definitely one of them. Over the past few years I've brought it up from time to time. For my birthday one year, I even asked her, as a gift to me, to watch three episodes of The Wire. To this day, we have watched two. She actually got a little bit more into the second episode, but everytime I bring up watching that third episode she shuts me down.
I know for a fact I've made this a way bigger deal then it need be. I've brought the subject up with her way too much, and have no doubt created a lot of unnecessary pressure around the situation. I understand there are certain things I love which she won't love. For example, I know she'll never really love Phish, and I'm honestly fine with that. She actually went all the way to Miami with me for NYE in 09. She saw a show, had a decent time, but ultimately said it wasn't for her, and I respect that. Phish has always been more about hitting the road with the guys anyway, for me.
But this Wire thing has seriously stuck in my craw for years. Am I being too obsessive? Am I crazy? Should I leave well enough alone, or gently push on, so that I can re-experience The Wire through her eyes?
I know its an odd question, and I'm asking in somewhat of a light-hearted fashion, but to rewatch the Wire with her is something that is strangely important to me. Just not sure if I should drop it or not.
For the record I haven't brought it up in a long time, and am thinking of giving it another go, but I thought I'd reach out to some other obsessive-types before proceeding.

Just tell her by the end of the season she'll be dying for more. It's totally one of those "you can't just judge one episode.....you have to see the sum of it's parts" type of things. I watched the first episode 3 times over a long period of time before moving on to the rest and falling in love. I didn't have much of an interest to get into the second episode but once I barreled through a few it got great. You really start to see the pieces start coming together and that's what makes it amazing.
We watched the first episode and she really liked it. We haven't watched anymore yet (trying to get HBO Go to work on the TV, thinking of buying a Roku).
She also loved the godfather 1 and 2 and loves other cop and crime shows.

It's a slow burn show. You literally can not watch it the same way you watch other shows. You have to like re-train your brain and become more patient with the storytelling and trust that it will pay off.
You just gotta let her sort of discover it on her own volition, jack. If you force her to watch it telling her it's the best show of all time, she'll just feel pressure and will have a harder time getting into it. Patience, my friend. If she's into good television, she'll start watching it on her own eventually.
I watched it on & off the first season, not really getting into it much. I had just had my 1st kid so TV watching was way down on the list of things to do. When season 2 started, I was able sit down & watch. I quickly went back & watched the 1st season again, while waiting for the next week's episode. I was hooked. I was a sociology major, working in drug prevention & with at risk kids, so it had a lot of meaning for me. It is & will always be my favorite TV show ever.

Well, they are the best American TV shows ever. So get to work on both.

I highly recommend it. I got it for Christmas 2 years ago & realized last night that I never finished it. Started back reading it & would be happy to loan it out if anyone is interested.

Literally any time I read any Wire-related news tidbit or something about an actor from the show I get the thought "Maybe today I will start re-watching from the beginning again" but then I realize I don't have time.

Just realizing why this thread was bumped. What a shame, not only was he a great character but he was the acting coach responsible for many of the show's other characters.
