I know Im late to the party on this, but I avoided this thread until I finished the show. Just have few minutes. Not sure if I can rank the seasons fairly having just finished but I would say 3 is the best. I liked 4 a lot, but I cant see myself watching it ever again its just too sad. Based on everything I had read I expected season 5 to be much weaker, however I thought it holds up with the rest of the show very well. It doesnt hurt that my wife is in her last semester of Journalism school so hearing her commentary on the media stuff was great. Have to go to work and will add more later. Also, Omar is the best Character there is no argument and Slim Charles shooting Cheese was just awesome.

There is an argument about the best character in that it depends on what you are judging it on. I still say Bubbles is better, but Omar is definitely a great, great character.
"This sentimental motherquacker just cost us money!" is still one of my favorite lines of the entire show.
I'm almost done. About half way through season 5. Is a good show. The writing is great, the acting and actors is what keeps it from being as great as it's made out to be. The Sopranos is way better in my opinion, because the acting is so much more captivating. Most of the actors are terrible and uninteresting. Omar is not the most interesting character either. In, my opinion, it's Marlo. I might have to go back and watch again, but I'd rank the season as such
4 1 2 3 5
Again that might change because I'm only half way through season 5, and id like to watch again.
It's true. Most of the detectives are boring. Except for Morgan, and sometimes Lester they were the worst part of the show. The acting us pretty suspect in this show.

I loved the cops. Bunk, McNulty, and Lester were all awesome and I really enjoyed Greggs and Sydnor's work. Also felt like Carver was a fantastic character arch to watch. Going from being meat headed like Herc into a good cop was fun to see. Oh....and I almost forgot Daniels who is an important part.
You think these guys are boring/uninteresting because of the acting? I don't know. I've seen all these guys do WILDLY different things in their career and I think the characters on this show were meant to be a little dull. Watch Lt. Daniels on Oz to see his range, check out some of McNulty's other big roles, and even Lester/Bunk play very different but still interesting characters on Treme.
Couldn't disagree more with the cops being boring.
I will admit, Carver turned out pretty good. I agree that I did enjoy watching him progress. I couldn't stand McNulty or Daniels. I also didn't like Herc or Greggs or Prezbo either. Bunk was the only one that I enjoyed watching consistently. The crime figures and the union workers were the best part of the show for me.
For the record, I'm not trying to say that the show isn't good. It was a really good show, but I think it's over hyped, and I was expecting a lot more based on how much praise it gets. I just thought the Sopranos was a better show.

pmo.....maybe rewatching the series in a year or few years from now will grow your appreciation of some of those characters.
I didn't take your post to mean you're saying the show is bad.....I just found it shocking that you found the actors to be boring/uninteresting. I felt like maybe it was more about the characters not being that flashy. I mean to me, Lester is boring/odd but the moment he delivers the photo of Avon and sits back at his desk to whittle down some tiny furniture I thought "That dude is badass in a way I've never seen before". He does his own thing and is an awesome detective but is so run down by the bullshit and politics of his job.
The only characters that really bore me are Carcetti/Norman.
Yea at times that stuff can drag because it's so disconnected from most of the other stories. I did like seeing how someone goes from honest politician trying to do better things for his area and is slowly manipulated/transformed into being just like the other guys with problems and mistakes and scandals. I liked seeing his rise.
I thought the stuff on politics hit it right on the head. The problem with politicians today is that all they are worried about is getting elected or reelected. So they handicap themselves from implementing programs that would do good because they are worried about how it will initially be received by the public. They spend all their time in office riding the fence and aren't able to actually make any changes. It's sad.

I liked the Carcetti scenes up until season 5 and then it just became a drag. On episode 8 so maybe I'll finish the series up pretty soon. Season 5 hasn't been too bad but my least favorite for sure.
The problem with season 5 is this whole make-believe serial killer stuff. I understand the point of wouldn't be cool if you went outside the rules to get what you needed, but this is such a stretch.

The show has had plenty of "stretches" though before season 5. Hamsterdam was just as unbelievable IMO.
Interestingly enough, the "spiderman" jump from Omar out of the apartment from a high level to the ground is based on the real life Omar who made a similar jump.

OK, cause of this board, I am obsessed with this show. All because someone had an Omar Little banner saying "Money has no owners, only spenders.". I can't recall who it was but thank you. This show kicks ass, finshed season 2 last night, on to 3 tonight. Totally up my alley with my minor in sociology.
