So I stumbled on this noise punk band from Louisville called Waxeater, (great name) and their latest is a concept record based on The Wire. And I kinda dig it.
The A.V. Club: Where did the idea come from to do a Wire concept album? Rob Montage: I got into the show late, a couple years after it went off the air. Everyone said to watch it, and I mainlined it in two weeks and thought it was incredible. I once had a weird dream about Omar—that he was going to shoot me but decided not to. I wrote it into the lyrics of a new song about how the threat of that violence could motivate you to do something with your life. That song became “Omar Comin’.” After that, I just started to think, ‘How else could I work my thoughts through the cipher of the show?’”
AVC: So the songs aren’t necessarily about specific episodes, but more a collection of songs “inspired by”? RM: There are tons of references to characters and events in the show, and the songs lean heavily on the same themes. I mix a lot of characters and quotes that might not relate to each other on the show, but that tie together in the context of the songs. You definitely aren’t getting episode summaries. AVC: So give us an example for folks who haven’t seen the show. What is “That’s Protestant Whiskey” about, and how does The Wire inform it? RM: Well, the title comes from the ostensible lead of the show, Detective McNulty. He’s Irish and at some point someone offers him non-Jameson, which he turns down by rebuking it as “Protestant whiskey.” The thing about McNulty is that he’s a fuck-up. A well meaning fuck-up, but a fuck-up, to be sure. The song itself is about how we are also basically well-meaning fuck-ups too, but the consequences are a bit less severe. That bass line is one Elliott [Turton, the bassist] has been dicking around with at practice for like three years and we finally developed it.

Sorry to bump this thread...but I just finished the series last night. Loved it. It took me some time to get going, but once I got into the show, I couldn't stop. Watched the whole series in a couple months, but watched seasons 3-5 within the last two weeks.
Hard for me to rank the seasons, as I've only seen them once and seasons 3 and 4 kind of ran together for me.
1. Wallace's death scene was the moment that may have had the biggest impact on me. Poor kid had a good heart, and didn't deserve to die.
2. Such great character development on this show. Bubbles, Carver, and unfortunately Dukie changed drastically throughout the series.
3. Seeing Dukie working the corner at the end of season 4 crushed me. Seeing him shooting heroin t the end of season 5 crushed me worse. He was one of my favorite characters, and to see him fall to the street was tough.
4. Even as a journalism major, I felt season 5 was the weakest season. Still enjoyed the season, and love the way the series wrapped up, but the whole fake serial killer story arch seemed a bit unrealistic compared to the rest of the series.
5. I already knew in advance that Omar was killed by a child while in a grocery store, but that scene and episode still hit hard. I liked how over the next few episodes, the legend of how he died grew.
6. I've heard mixed opinions of season 2, but I really enjoyed it. I was confused at the start, since it showed a completely different aspect of Baltimore than season 1. But I recalled hearing how each season dealt with a different facet of the city. As someone mentioned previously, season 2 was important in that it showed the viewer where the drugs were coming from, and how important that aspect is. Ziggy was annoying, but I enjoyed Nick and Frank's characters.
7. Think I might wait a few months, then watch it again from the start.

Never apologize for loving & talking about The Wire.

Been re-watching this over the past few weeks with a friend who is going through it for his first time. It's always interesting to see what people come up with for characters and storyline predictions when they haven't seen it before.
Also....forgot how much Barksdale/gangster stuff there still was in Season 2. For some reason I thought there was much, much less because of the focus on the docks. Good to know Stringer is still running shit.
Also....needs more Omar. Because myself and others kept hyping him up to my friend and while he's badass/legendary he still has lots of awesome to do. We're midway through the second season so far.....watching Ziggy whip his dick out all the time and Horseface looking like a living muppet.
I want to do a top 5 or 10 characters...but it's so hard. So many great characters.
Off the top of my head (and can easily change):
- Omar - Bodie - Freamon - Michael - McNulty
Got a real soft spot for Marlo, Greggs, and surprisingly....Carver too. Re-watching it let's me see how much that speech from Daniels in Season 1 about being a good/respectful/honorable cop really affected him. He still has some issues but he actively tries to get better. Heartbreaking stuff with him and Randy.

Also....fuck Valcheck. I hate that the whole feud with the union workers was because he got annoyed that he couldn't have the main window in the church for his stained glass piece. He went ahead and had it made without checking first and then got mad that someone else already had that spot. Leave Frank and the boys alone, Stan!

I swear, that's my top five too. For today at least.

Anybody who doesn't have Bubbles in their top 5 can go fuck themselves.

Valchek, Rawls, Burrell, Levy and Landsman are my least favorite characters. and Clay Davis is a dirty motherfucker but shiiiiiiit. and it's funny how I don't hate any of the murderers or drug dealers, just the asshole cops and lawyers.

I'm still at the point of the re-watch where he's charming but not amazing. McNulty just treated him like garbage in order to get a line on Omar but in general I find that I enjoy Bubbles a lot more (and grow way more sympathetic) after Johnny is gone.

Agreed, though I give Landsman some leniency. He has a good side but is stuck as a middle-man who will always side with the bosses. I do like it when he'd get serious and complimentary though.
