Haha I'm a cynacal hipster dickbag? Out of the bands you mentioned the only ones I would have really liked to see are Beck, Costello, and Sonic Youth. I'm in the same boat as Nod in that now when I see those lineups I would love to go but then I wouldn't have. I really only started going to shows regularly in 08 and didn't become obsessed with live music until Roo 08. I don't think my 16-17 year old mind would have been ready for the whole experience of Roo.
Don't be alarmed. I divide everyone's music tastes into one of four categories: "cynical hipster dickbag" (you, NoD, karosko, GL, etc.); "delusionally urban white guy" (me, flanzo, Sproat); "elitist close-minded faux-hippie" (Jess, everyone on here who talks about Phish); and "Sangreal" (Sang).

Only year I went was 2011
2011 - Leaving MMJ a bit earlier than we needed to, while they were playing I'm Amazed, to get a good spot for Primus (my friends wanted to go, although they were awesome). - Leaving Arcade Fire during Rococo to get a good spot for Lil Wayne. Our spot wasn't worth it. We probably could have gotten almost as close if we had stayed for AF. On top of that, I saw Wayne for $20 two months later, so it wasn't even worth it. - Leaving Girl Talk early because I was tired. At least I had seen him once before. - Not seeing more of SCI's set - Leaving Centeroo during Widespread to get something from the camp, only to return and for them to refuse to let us back in. Had to watch the rest of their set from outside Centeroo. - Missing Grace Potter and Allison Krauss

I missed GIVERS because I was post-Grace Potter and "fortifying" myself for Florence and Arcade Fire. That's a band I hope comes back and plays a tent.
watching the Police (2007) not staying for Widespread Panic (2007, 2008) staying for all of Phish instead of checking out Femi Kuti (2009) missing Israel Vibration (2008) not staying up for late night Dumpstaphunk (2006) not bringing a proper rain fly for my tent (2006, 2008, 2009)

Disagree Dan...I thought they mailed it in but hey, if you liked it that is all that matters. It may also have to do with the fact that Trombone Shorty brought it with so much energy the set before and I just felt Gaslight was a little flat.

Oh this will be fun.
07 I got so excited on weds that I didn't sleep. First casualty of that was falling asleep next to rod y gab on thurs 2nd casualty was the second half of the jpj superjam. Not knowing who dj shadow or the hold steady was. I missed Wilco to be 20 rows back for white stripes, only a partial regret.
08....sigh Missing last third of Metallica to get ready for late night. Didn't know mmj that well, watched first hour then went to super jam. Saw three songs of super jam and for some unknown reason left. Missed Hammett in both places. I was too happy and was convinced to leave second half of Sigur ros for a glowin the dark show that never came. Oh and not knowing mstrkrft
09
Ending up on the side entrance and getting into bonnaroo at like midnight on Thursday. Oh and getting pulled over on the way in, earlierthatday The actual shows were amazing though. No regrets.
10
Makes up for 08 and 09! Awesome Thursday Skipped kol and got front row for bassnectar and LCD. Jeff beck, Stevie, jay, Dan deacon, deadmau5, sunrise at disco biscuits might be the best night of my life.
11
Too crowded to enjoy sleigh bells Gf wasn't feeling good during pretty lights, kinda ended the night Fell asleep waiting for hooray, missed him, buffalo and keys. Face palm. Watching girl talk instead of Gogol.
That's the short version but theres more. In 5 years, I've missed Wilco twice and the black keys three times. But in their places isaw white stripes, mars Volta, the roots, and bass/LCD and a sleep mishap. Is 12 here yet?

#1 regret: not attending before 08
2008 Leaving a perfectly good blanket in the back of the Phil Lesh show to wait for hours on Kanye. Then while waiting missing Chali Tuna and Talib. I will never forget, still can't play my old Kanye records. Bringing my girlfriend at the time, who tried her damndest to ruin my goodtime. I still managed to prevail though. Missing Gogol. Missed Ghostland
2009: Once again I didn't bring all the right people. I go for the marathon, and have the uncanny ability to go for days on end without much sleep. Some folks get left behind and I feel a little guilty. I missed way too many day shows that year waiting for my peeps to recover. Although I got close and loved the Beastie Boys, we just got to David Byrne too late. Only got to hear a little bit sad.
2010 Finally got the right crew, and I was the dumbass who got wore out. Actually, a mix of a few too many non-placebos, lack of water, and heat exhaustion had me in the main medical tent for the latenight on Saturday. Regrettable to say the least, but that night gave birth to one helluva funny story in retrospect. Sitting through all of Wale on Thursday, seriously the worst show I've ever seen at Bonnaroo. Why I didnt leave still escapes me.
2011: Not realizing that My Morning Jacket was with PHJB in the Parade. I only saw the parade was happening, when it arrived at the float. I was at SCI and noticed folks running over towards the float. When I got there, I saw PHJB walking behind the float and it didnt seem to be a restricted area. I wandered over and met all of the PHJB and had great convo with Mr. Jaffe. However, being a little spun I didnt see that my favorite band was hanging out right there with us until I saw video of it later, doh!
"A man's at odds to know his mind cause his mind is aught he has to know it with. He can know his heart, but he dont want to. Rightly so. Best not to look in there." -Cormac McCarthy
But there are a few conflicts that make my balls hurt when I think about them. If I had the chance I wouldn't do it differently, but I do wish it hadn't been schedule so that I missed the following shows. In parentheses is what I went to instead.
2008: Levon Helm (Ben Folds) B.B. King (Ben Folds) Zappa Plays Zappa (Ben Folds) Iron and Wine (Ben Folds [seriously, fuck whoever scheduled that bullshit.]) Porter, Batiste, Stoltz (DSO [this one might be my only actual regret.]) Vampire Weekend (DSO) First half of Raconteurs (Claypool) Second half of Claypool (Raconteurs) MMJ (Superjam, FTW) Bisco (Superjam) YMSB (Group left early)
2010: Blitzen Trapper (Mayer Hawthorne) Steve Martin (Les Claypool) The Black Keys (The Flaming Lips) Galactic (Girlfriend being tired [Not much I could do here.]) John Prine (Jeff Beck) They Might Be Giants (Ween) Kris Kristofferson (Ween)
2011: Preservation Hall with Del McCoury (MMJ) Middle of MMJ (Primus) Middle of Primus (MMJ) Arcade Fire (Disinterest [could have been cool, but wasn't feeling it at the time.]) The Black Keys (Getting a spot for Buffalo Springfield) SCI (Dr. John [again, fuck whoever made this happen.]) STS9 (Gogol) Junip (Galactic) The Strokes (Superjam [do not regret this a bit. I don't understand all the complaints, this was incredible.])
Im getting from this thread a couple of recurring themes.
1) not going before X year 2) conflicts that made sense at the time that you missed something else 3) being too tired to see shows
also:
4) most people still have a great time.
Hell, its 4 days. We are bound to miss a show worth seeing for one reason or another. Making a judgement mistake is far easier to take than being a wuss and staying at camp, or letting other lazy people hang you up for too long and you miss a show.
I actually like this thread because REALLY, you can't make any horrible mistakes - if that makes sense.
I gotta disagree. You can make some bad mistakes. Okay, maybe not even "bad," but mistakes none the less. Some of my choices caused me to miss some great sets from 2008 especially, like José González in 2008.

Not really many major regrets, but here a few that I wish I could have scheduled. 2011 -Childish Gambino - was pooped after long day that concluded with Sleigh Bells -Lil Wayne - saw only 1 minute, but I want that minute back. -NOFX - would have liked to catch a few songs....conflicts -Girl Talk - nothing competes with Gogol for me. Didn't realize he was still going after Gogol finished. -Deer Tick - didn't know them then, but at least I stumbled upon Deervana.
2009 -Thursday - had flight problems and got in late and missed everything -David Byrne - wish I seen more of it -Santigold - didn't know who she was then, didn't see -Phoenix - not knowing them then, didn't see -Girl Talk - was too tired
2008 -MIA - caught 2 songs, but had a bunch to see. Wish I'd seen more -Avett bros - didn't know them then
2008 Breaking my ankle during Metallica. I missed a considerable amount of shows I wanted to see because I had to take it easy. Not planning to see MMJ, I would have probably still missed them, but I didn't know much about them, and because of that, didn't plan on seeing them at all. Not knowing who Sigur Ros was. This is probably the most painful regret of 2008, but redemption will be mine in 2012, by god! Leaving Sunday morning. In retrospect, I don't think my ankle could have gotten much worse, had I stayed and hobbled around on it.
2009 Um, not going in 2009! When the lineup was released, and I saw Phish (twice), Bruce Springsteen, and the Beastie Boys, I was underwhelmed to say the least. There was still loads of music to enjoy, and I shoulda went anyways.
2010 Having to leave the National mid set, I was on the verge of heatstroke I should have skipped KoL and gotten a good spot for the Flaming Lips. I should have stayed put for Jay Z, but my feet were killing me.
2011 This was a good year, I made all the proper scarafices to see what I most wanted to, which included: skipping Primus so that I could have a good spot for both MMJ and Arcade Fire skipping the Black Keys and Eminem so that I could see all of Mumford and Sons, have an awesome spot for Buffalo Springfield, and have enough energy for Dr John. Regrets include the following: Leaving the Black Angels to go see Bassnectar Not staying up for Pretty Lights Not surviving long enough for STS9 Skipping Ray Lamontangue for I forget who Missing Florence + Machine and Iron & Wine because of the heat and dust.
I think you missed Florence for whoever you skipped Ray for. She was playing at pretty much the same time.

Standing shoulder to shoulder against the rail through Wiz Khalifa-Black Keys-Eminem. the Black Keys killed it, but besides that it was terrible. My scoliosis was about to kill me..
Oh and eating a g of molly before Bassnectar/PL without taking my acid reflux medicine. I missed everything until 5PM Saturday; it sucked.
My regret of 2011, Not knowing that the back entrance was open to people in Access as well. I used it in 2010 when I was in guest so I knew it existed but forgot about it and no one at the info tent thought it would be a good idea to tell me about it. It would have made Friday a lot easier to get from Which to What. But I remembered it was there and things were better for the rest of the weekend.
And going to see the Strokes. What an awful show. But I promised my sister I would go with her.
2003: Not getting closer for Neil Young and Crazyhorse.
2004: Going to bed before the Primus late night show. Lots of rain I was beat after the Dead.
2005: Leaving the Word early to see Earl Scruggs.
2006: No regreats great year.
2007: Missing the Black Keys and the Decemberists.
2008:Not staying for the entire Lez Zeppelin set, killer atmoshpere but we left to see Dark Star.
2009: Biggest regret ever, choosing the Beastie Boys over David Byrne. I wanted to be close for Phish.
2010: Skipping the Black Keys for the FLips. The Lipps were great but wandered over the Keys during set break and it was rocking. Crowd was huge and you could not get anywhere near the tent.
2011: Missing the end of the MMJ show to stumble through the crowd to see Primus. Couldnt get close to the stage and it just wasn't as instense as the MMJ show.
2006 was awesome. 2008, Dark Star was just as awesome. 2009, David Byrne was one of the best things I ever saw. 2010, I missed a lot of that night because I drank all of the wine and fell in the mud. Then when I went to change time just started moving really fast and by the time I got back into Centeroo it was half way through the Lips. Then I drank more wine and apparently I was at Disco Biscuits. But I just remember waking up in my tent the next morning. But I was mostly by myself so anytime that happens I consider the night a success because at least I made it "home".
Last year, I didn't really miss anything but it was a pretty calm year. I was 7 months pregnant and so I moved slowly and slept a lot. But I still saw most of the music I wanted to. Same with 09.
In 2008 I think, the same thing happened. On Thursday I drank all of the wine and other things and about three hours after the show I said to my group "Aren't we supposed to be watching Vampire Weekend?" Ooops.
So I guess I do better when I'm pregnant and there is no wine.

2006: Magical, wouldn't change a thing.
2007: Still magical, sad I missed Rodrigo y Gabriela and Manu Chao
2008: Two Gallants, man I would give my right arm to go back and see these guys. My biggest Bonnaroo regret ever.
2009: Not going. Still not as big of a regret as missing Two Gallants
2010: Brilliant year, I guess I wish I could have seen the Avett Brothers, but I don't really regret my decision to see Mumford and Sons, I wouldn't trade that experience for the world. Wouldn't have minded seeing Norah Jones but where ever I was while she was playing it was obviously important.
2011: There are plenty of small bands I wanted to see that I didn't get around to but I'm okay with that. I had loads of fun hanging out with my(new) friends instead.
I've got to say all the planning I do really pays off when it comes to seeing bands, to a degree. I've never had any devastating conflicts, all the bands I have missed have been because I wanted to hang out with friends or do something else. I plan like a mad person but still wing it a lot at roo'. I give myself lots of room for spontaneity, but somehow I still manage to see just about everyone I want. I don't berate myself too much if I miss someone...except Two Gallants, damnit, what was I thinking?! (I still don't know who was playing or what I was doing while they were on but I sure hope it was important)
You live and you learn I guess, every year I go my experience improves a little. I know what to expect, I know what I am capable of, and most of all I know when to let things go (that's taken a considerable amount of time to learn)
2009 - This was my first real Roo and I wasnt that into the music scene at the time so I missed A LOT. I completely skipped Bruce to walk around and explore, then spent 2hrs waiting on the rail for Ben Harper only to be REALLY dissapointed by his set with R7. Oh and I missed half of MGMT and all of Yeasayer doing so.
2010 - Went with Chromeo and Daryl Hall over The Flaming Lips. I dont really regret that one, but I still wish I could have seen FL.
2011 - Being camped in BFE, I spent WAY too much time at camp during the day. I typically wouldnt make the hike into Centeroo until about 4pm everyday and missed A LOT of great acts that played earlier in the day. I was also recovering from strep throat so I had to take it easy.
2011: Had to miss Ray Lamontagne to wait on a friend; missed Ratatat and most of Pretty Lights due to taking a girl back to my camp...but I guess that wasn't a total loss
