Whether it's your first Bonnaroo or you’re a music festival veteran, we welcome you to Inforoo.
Here you'll find info about artists, rumors, camping tips, and the infamous Roo Clues. Have a look around then create an account and join in the fun. See you at Bonnaroo!!
This thread doesnt have the Bonnaroo "spirit" that one would expect. In all honesty its not the newbs that cause for pages of nonsense, its the "inforoo vets" that jabber on and have pages full of inside jokes. Maybe if everyone just stuck to the topic at hand you could avoid pages of BS.
Just my 2 cents.....everyone get excited for Roo...its officially 2012!
Come on Barry..we both know that when a "newb" re-posts a thread or creates a duplicate topic it is pounced on by the majority of inforooers and the page is locked by a moderator. Most of what is on here is basically a GIANT MSN chat board for many of the people on here that have become friends over the years. Now, Im not knocking that, but to blame a "newb" is nonsense and it is only called out by those that feel they have some sort of hierarchy on this board. Bottom line is that its a public forum and wheter you have been on here for 6 years or 6 days, you should still have a voice and an opinion. As for the Bonnarro spirit, just because you tend to put a negative connotation on most topics doesnt reflect they way others feel about the festival or music....and they dont necessarily have to be a wook to have "Bonnaroo Spirit".
As a whole, I think something like this will discourage people from sticking around. I know some will say "great" to that notion. Yes, new members do ask questions about things already discussed and open threads that have already been created...I think we do a pretty good job of pointing those out and locking them, with your help of course.

I try to. But like Jess mentioned on the previous page, there's only so many times we can be nice and patient. I've been attacked, as have others, for trying to point out other threads to new folks or suggesting they read a bit before posting.
I guess I would just like for some people to have some common sense before they post; and I realistically know we can't instill that in people.
But I do think this is a good conversation to have.

As a counterpoint: I'm a member of another online message board, this one dedicated to a certain fandom of a certain sports team. It's a very well-run board, close-knit, and has an extremely high quality-to-quantity ratio. On that board, new members are not given full posting privileges until they've been nominated/approved by board members and moderators. Basically, there's a "new members" forum where these members can post, and people can take notice of them and nominate them for admission. It winds up keeping the chaff into one area, while making it easier to separate the wheat. The end result is a smoother, less-cluttered community. Rather than deter people from sticking around, it encourages prospective posters to step their game up and contribute something of value (insight, humor, whatever). So rather than making a time limit on new posters, why not have an introductory forum? Or, say, make only some forums open to posting from new members (maybe the general discussion forum), with new posters being given the option to post elsewhere once they've demonstrated that they're semi-rational human beings who have some idea how to operate a mouse and keyboard without devolving into raving beasts?
Also, plz ban Jess.
This would probably be the best way to go if inforoo chose to implement new member rules. The only concern/question I would have is, who would be the one/ones to decide when the new member could participate in full discussions? I feel that EVERYONE would have to be open to other peoples opinions and views for this to work.
I think that would take so much time and effort, though. Maybe that's just me. I know I don't have enough hours in the day to get what I need done. I'm sure the mods are the same way.
Ive been around for IDK, just shy of a year? When I first came to this forum, I started a thread that was already covered, and one of the mods (I forget who, sorry) closed the thread, and offered me the thread that was already in place with the information I needed. I also got busted on by some vets here. I deserved it, and kept my mouth shut. Months later, I opened a thread about Orlando Calling totally in the wrong place (there was already a thread for it), and again a mod moved the thread or whatever and let me know about the right spot for that.
Other than that, my only crimes are knowing less than the vets (and speaking out of temporary ignorance, but in the right threads - and I take my medicine) and having different tastes than others about some things (which become fun debates sometimes).
However, I did notice that when I joined there were a lot of others doing the same things. It must have been a pain in the ass for the mods. The vets seemed to enjoy it though - I remember one specific thread about the definition of a hipster and all these thinly veiled cuts on specific newbs and us as a whole. I think its funny. I actually enjoy being called out, I laugh and try to be smarter about it next time. But I did need to be quarantined in the beginning which took work from the mods.
Had I been forced to read certain threads first, I would probably not made the first mistake, and almost definitely not the second one (the Orlando Calling one).
I think I contribute some to the board, but obviously not nearly as much as others. Had I been thin skinned, or impatient, or ADD or putoff by a waiting period, I may not be a member here now. (I am none of those things...well maybe ADD but I would have waited it out)
My point is, I believe that a SHORT waiting period is important. I voted for 3 days, but 48 hours is my suggestion. During that time, the newbs in question should be able to read the entire board. They should also have a section that they can post in. Also, in that section there should be certain stickies, like the thread about what to expect/arrive at roo, and a VERY SHORT, BULLET POINTED post about how the forum is organized, how to find what they are looking for, that kind of thing. It would be nice if there was a way to force them to read the 'common sense' page.
I also think it would be a good idea for vets to pop in there sometimes, and post POLITELY. (although that is probably a pipe dream lol)
A short waiting period, where they can post amongst the pool of newbs and read some quality threads and get an idea about how this particular forum works is a great idea. I just hope that whatever action is chosen does not deter too many people from sticking around and becoming contributing members.
One last thought:
With a 7 day waiting period, we would never have had the "2 21 year olds and a 30' RV looking to party" thread. Just sayin

Has anyone ever found these mythical eternal 21 year olds and their Xanadu Van? Seriously there is a lot of good discussion on here. And i will say one thing there is no elitism on this board it is looking like a lot of people are down on that. A waiting period smacks of it and that is what is up with the Bonnaroo Spirit. It is standing up for the little people. And as to all of this angst it is a sign that the lineup is almost here. We all know what that entails. And yes their is grief on this board from the newbs. Or even reading my poopy punctuation! yes I need an editor probably worse then I need a groupie. However if the good citizens of Manchester can manage us descending on their town every year we can can handle the newbs. We want them there! If it was just a bunch of crusty old coots the festie would get stale real quick! We need fresh young blood to make things work. And that spirit is real everything from a random grilled cheese and ice water from a nice neighbor, to say some glow sticks and glitter sprinkles from a pretty girl, to say even last year when QuackingScrogARoo rolled through brunch helping me and several other people out on this board. Since then I have seen people give away Portishead tickets, I personally tried giving away a ticket to see Beats Antique not to long ago. Hell I am going to the post office shortly to mail a pair of free tickets to see Common. The fact is the newbs will be here after all this is a public board. This is merly like the eternal question of directing traffic flow into Bonnaroo and a real allegory to that dilemma. We want everyone in as Jim Morrison said the ceremony is about to begin. And he said "Is everybody in?" I like the people that are against the waiting period why because you have taken up the cause of strangers random kindness! I had a good lesson in that last year. I do not know these new people but I will hear their stories, questions, life experiences and be their Psychologist/Counselor/Bartender/Priest etc. And some of them will come in here stark raving full of madness! And that is what it is all about. All this other stuff it reeks of the real world. I vote for Chaos we have survived long enough with it. Why grease a squeaky wheel it has a certain tune to it and it is lovely! And i still do not see a spot for no waiting period so I will continue to abstain my vote from this.

I do not think the waiting period will keep the trolls out, but it may help some people figure out the boards before making a fool out of themselves and making vets pull their hair out and making mods do extra unnecessary work.
On the 'editor' comment:
I like reading your posts, but they would be much easier to read if you threw in some line spacings from time to time. Even if the breaks do not make sense, it is easier on the eyes.
