At MOST I could see a 24 hour period just to keep people from posting knee jerk reactions, but I see minimal benefit in this.
I think 24 hours would separate a lot of wheat from the chaff. Don't get me wrong I love for us to get new members, and I am typically pretty welcoming. However a small amount of time when they were encouraged to read Leo's List, a thread that states opening times, and a few other key issues could be beneficial.
Is there a way to go as short as 4-8 hours? That should give people enough time to catch up before posting, and realistically that is all we need.

A majority of people who are signing up have already been here, but are just lurking. Giving a 4-8 hour limit will not force people to catch up/read. They may already have been reading along all the while.
The real trick here is to convey the messages of:
1. Look before you post - is there a thread for this band already? Is there a thread that already answers or addresses your question?
2. Read before you post - seems similar but this is actually different. Looking around is scoping the place and seeing if threads/topics were already created. Reading before you post is more about chcecking the last few posts made in the thread you're about to post in to make sure the "exclusive info" or "leaked lineup" you're about to post wasn't already debunked/mentioned.
3. Don't spam - don't just post like crazy. Actually contribute to the thread/discussion

Yeah it just seems like a lot of people just sign up and go crazy, a little cool down period to let the buck fever simmer off is not really a bad idea imo.

I agree with you totally about that. I am just not sure that 4-8 hours is going to make things better than a 24 hour waiting period.
Even if we make it 48 hours....it's just delaying the people from posting and the problem we face are posting habits....not when the people post.
Whatever is decided is fine by me. Either way we're going to have an influx of new members and a good portion of them will do noobish things so we all just best prepare for it lol.

I don't really know how much effect this will have on some of the noob issues. Certainly the waiting period may cut down on the random spam we get occasionally, but I agree with ITM that most of the issues stem from bad habits or lack of forum knowledge, and I don't know if a waiting period will do much with that. But its worth a shot. I think we would all be better served if there was a way to promote certain threads that cover a lot of the basics and general forum know-how.

Or something close to this, at least there wouldn't be 2390482398523 new threads about whatever band this particular class of noobs is horny for

You mean like the bulletin style threads, or whatever you call them? My words are failin' me right now. Just a playful jab. Waitin' period or not, we're still gonna have our community here. And some kids will stick around, and others won't.
Guys, I know the newbies can be taxing at times. I've had my share of run arounds with a few of them these last few weeks. But for the most part, they are good kids just trying to fit in and enjoy the show.
So be nice.
And Juggs, take a Xanax and an Advil for those over exercised muscles, and go file a brief.
If you take out the random insults, and insinuations that the new user is probably an idiot it is really not half bad.
Do me a favor. Think about how dumb the "average" person is. Then follow that up by realizing that about 50% of the population is actually more stupid than that.
No I get that, still it is not nice to presume, and a intro like that will be ignored by the idiots, and it will tend to drive off the ones with two brain cells to rub together.
I got an almost unbiased opinion on the letter. I read it to my husband. He does not know or care about most of you on inforoo. I told him I felt it was too aggressive for new members.
