Just had a thought - you guys think there's any chance the IV is referring to clue number four? Like maybe this is a crossword puzzle type thing where we can't solve this one until we have the previous one solved? (I hope not...)

I was thinking something like this as well. I have actually come across more than a few that I swear intertwine. I can't remember any specific at the moment. But on multiple occasions I have come across stuff that I say to myself would make so much sense in connection to a part of another clue(for Example; connection honey with a performing cadaver, or connecting 4 with a titan), like I said not specifically those but along those line.
That's fantastic. It's a little strange that IV would end up just being a clue for 'i' but it makes as much sense as any of the other guesses. Iceage has a date in Austin 5/31, then Norway 6/26, so even if they're not the answer to the clue they're a solid maybe to be at the fest.

Well, now that we have number 4 solved I'm thinking the IV in this one probably isn't a reference to clue 4, since "push in the fruit bats" doesn't really make much sense.
- Four is a heavily used number in Buddhist symbolism. Biggest one i see is the four steps to total enlightenment, which could be considered a certain kind of second "coming of age"... no idea to use that with the vowels though. - Four TET... can anyone make tet or tetrahedron out of the rest of the clue? - Four - Beyonce album, pretty obviously not her - Like in golf. Maybe it's supposed to be interpreted as fore? doubtful.
Also tried making Akron/Family work due to their song "A AAA O A Way" comprising mostly of vowels.
Just checked this out and had a moment of clarity..it's OAR. push the 4 oars like in a boat..follow the vowels to the coming of age--O&A are vowels of course and R stands for Revolution (example: the United States became independent from its father country) SOLVED lol

this is a stretch but jj perhaps?
New album is being promoted on their blog along with the new single V. Next album is n° 4 and IV could be referencing the single V and the album n° 4. Follow the vowels, j comes after i but that is as far as i can get.
Bonnaroo Wish 2011 Wish List.. Going Big lol... F&TM, Robyn, La Roux, of Montreal, Janelle Monae, Sia, M.I.A., Girl Talk, Daft Punk, Animal Collective, Radiohead, The xx (but prolly not), iamamiwhoami (would be a dream), Yeasayer, Grizzly Bear... perhaps more but that would be greedy haha
I don't think it has been mentioned so I'm trying to go down the route of push being a tie(like in black jack). Gary seems to be using obscure synonyms a lot this year.
That brought me to four in hand, which is a tie tying method. Kinda stuck there but going to continue looking.
I really liked the tUnE-yArDs guess. And I know they don't usually do clues for headliners, but Radiohead has a song called "Bloom" which is a synonym for coming of age. If you push in the fourth letter of the alphabet, D, into some vowels (AIO) or follow vowels (EA) with a fourth letter. Well, I can't make the whole thing work, but it sounded good when I started.
I keep coming back to the keypad thing, although if you push in 4 and follow the vowels from there it would only be "IOU" in which case my best guesses would be Allan Holdsworth whose second album was IOU and may be considered his "coming of age album" or maybe Metric who had a song called IOU.

IOU was the first song on their first non-EP album. Metric also has a song and album titled “Grow up and blow away” so the coming of age thing might work.
I still think the phrasing of the first part could have something to do with needles or I.V. therapy since it says to "push in" the IV. It can mean the number 4 and still be referencing IV's and needles.
Another thought is if it's a band with three members that added a fourth, ie. "pushed in" the fourth member. Can anyone think of any recent bands like that? Perhaps vowel-y bands? ;D

If "push in the IV"for some reason means google "the four" and follow to vowels (the o's of a google search representing the pages) to "o" 18, you get a youtube video of metallica. i'm not a fan of the band myself so i have no idea what they're up to these days.
a stretch but at least at least you are "following vowels" if that makes sense.
