I made a thread about it a year or two ago. Veteran posters filled me in.
Their board's header if it still exists is Thom Yorke (Cool) Trey (Meh) Dude from Disco Biscuits with his hat sideways (Boo) and then a grilled cheese sandwich or something.
I got it now, this issue is more about a internet clique that like to harass and troll. Lemme guess, this crap started in the Troo Music Lounge.
Come on, MikeD, no reason to levy explicit or insinuated insults like this. Saying stuff like this is only gonna make this whole thing turn into a divisive issue in which people feel forced to pick sides and that's never good. It'll ultimately devolve from an argument about a legitimate issue with the boards into some silly TROO MUSIC LOUNGE VERSUS THE MAFIA CREW war without anyone recognizing it as such. There's no reason to set it on that path; we can all be friends.
My only point all along was that I feel like the filters eschew the meanings behind posts in certain situations. There was never any maliciousness behind this, never any fear of lost credibility, never any desire to SUCK ALL THE FUN OUT OF INFOROO, never any juvenile need to cuss to prove we're cool (I think all of us will agree that that ended in high school, if not earlier, so to accuse adults of this just isn't fair or helpful). I think I speak for most of us in favor of the change to asterisks when I say that it was just a result of the frustration from having our posts changed into things we didn't mean without having any say in the matter.
I don't bring any of this up to reignite the debate, just to clarify and explain my position. The bottom line is, if this was put to a vote and people voted fair-in-square on which they'd prefer and keeping the filters won, I'm fine with that. I'm glad that it was put to a vote and I'm not gonna be one to get upset with a process like that. The people have spoken.
For people wanting to catch up what this all started from was nodepression, and a few others getting their feelings hurt because when they worked around the filter their posts got modded. Not a cliquey thing, just generally being upset for being lightly punished for repeatedly breaking the rules.
I'm with rosko on this one. It's really just the fact that I look like an idiot when I say, "I quacking love this band" or "I think this band is the poop"
What do you want from me? We get complaints that the mods let too many things slide so I'm told to make sure we're on top of things.
If I see a post with curses then I have to edit it. We just banned a person for saying racial slurs too much and we also had someone change their signature GIF because it had a homophobic word in it. I know curses aren't exactly the same thing but they are banned words. Not my decision.
I've even had to ask Juggs in the past to stop breaking the word filter by using the "workaround" and he said he'd comply but that he's not the only one that does it. I understand that and we can't just say "some people can break the rules and some can't". I know that we can't enforce it all the time 100% (can't read everything in every thread) but we're supposed to when we see it.
Sorry I'm lame
I didn't say you were lame, I said what you were doing was lame.
I just think it looks like you're going out of your way now to enforce everything. People found the filters infantilizing, they worked around them, now you're editing people's posts. It looks bad when there's an edit and it's not by the original poster.
So what do you suggest we do to stop people from going around the word filters? I'm open to suggestions.
Why is it a problem that people found a loophole in the coding of the board?
Look, if our biggest concern here is people being able to read at work, I'm not really for it. This may bite me in the ass someday when/if I work in an office, but I think the filters are silly and make this board look bad.
I'm not arguing for either side of this, but I would like to point out that the words that replace the curse words are nonsensical and make the post look a little dumber. I've never understood why they aren't just replaced with f***, s***, etc. Just saying.
There will always be things you or anybody else does not like. I never had a problem with the filters myself. I just do not understand why people have such a need to see or type curse words? I have nothing against them myself but the filter was put in place for a reason. Bypassing it on purpose is not acceptable, it is a rule and we would hope users will respect that. It makes the board look bad? I respect your opinion but I fail to see how it makes us look bad. I think more people laugh about it, more than anything. I just fail to see why this a big enough issue to have a huge discussion about it?
It's not the filters really, it's that a mod is editing posts that aren't theirs.
