Well its not like Gov Ball will be sharing that many of the same bands. If you look at last years festival, Gov Ball was mostly young, electronic bands aimed at the kids (GIrl Talk, Pretty Lights, Empire of the sun, etc). Either you like one or the other.
"All in all, the creative act is not performed by the artist alone.. the spectator brings the work in contact with the external world by deciphering and interpreting its inner qualifications and thus adds his contribution to the creative act." -- Marcel Duchamp

I know many people who like both not one or the other. And Governors Ball posted on their facebook today that more then one act on Orion is also going to be at their fest.

I'm not the biggest Metallica fan in the world, but I have always (save some of the newer stuff) liked them. "Fade to Black" is one of my favorite songs ever and knowing that they are playing "The Black Album" one night and "Ride the Lightning" the other, is pretty f*cking awesome. I am gonna try whatever possible to be there.
Good for Metallica. At one time I wondered why Metallica didn't launch an annual Ozzfest rival, but they rightfully sat back and watched the traveling mega package tour die out.
Part of me is sad that this is probably the nail in the coffin for hopes of another Summer Sanitarium ever happening again. To me that was the coolest concept ever - getting bands that considered Metallica their heroes to open for them in football stadiums across the country.
This is the most amazing quackin news!!! As a Metallica fan, I am simply not missing this(Ride the Lightning in its entirety fuuuuuck). Plus with the festival being called Orion, I'll have a dream fulfilled and that is seeing Orion being played live. goddang this is awesome thank you Inforoo for making me giddy like a quackin schoolgirl.
Also great undercard with Cage the Elephant, The Sword, The Arctic Monkeys, The Gaslight Anthem, and Avenged Sevenfold really sticking out for me.

I was on the fence until I read they're doing Ride the Lightning. That might just be too good to pass up. Also, Arctic Monkeys, Gaslight, and Titus is like a dream bill for me.
With you buddy.Got my early bird ticket to this. Can't wait, this is going to be epic. What's also fantastic is that it is in Atlantic City. I know after the fest is over for the day, I'm gonna tear up the hold'em tables.
Here's some awesome tracks I'm going to share with y'all. This first one is their instrumental opus. The one and only Orion. The bass is unreal on this (Burton is a god) and has got one of the best shredding moments of their career. I chose the studio version, so you can hear all the nuances of the track. After a great rhythm intro, it really starts to kick in at the four minute mark. This part takes it from a great metal song to a great song that compares with classical masters IMO
From Ride the Lightning. Creeping Death. Great crowd song.

All of these videos remind me of how incredible Metallica used to be. If they were doing Ride the Lightning and Master of Puppets in their entireties, I would've already bought VIP tickets.

They still deliver the goods and their current bassist Trujillo (shown in the For Whom vid) is actually better than Newsted. He's the reason they have been hitting up their back catalog in recent tours because he can play Cliff Burton's bass. Which is an AMAZING feat!! You know that opening riff on For Whom the Bells Tolls is a bass with wah-wah pedal effects that always gets mistaken for guitar. He has 2 lead solos in Orion that also gets confused for guitar. Burton's "lead bass" role in Metallica puts him as one of the greatest metal bassists in history. This video will attest. This entire song is a Cliff Burton bass solo.
They still are great, just ask people about their 08 Bonnaroo show.
As far as having Ride the Lightning and Master of Puppets. Yeah that would absolutely rock!!I'm pretty sure i would have to change my shorts. But I rather wait for them to play Master of Puppets another year. I want this festival to keep going and I'm ecstatic to get Black Album and Ride the Lightning. Ride the Lightning, that shit gives me all smiles. Cant believe i'm going to hear the first full performance of Escape!! ;D
Some great tracks from the Black Album that I can't wait.
The God That Failed.Rare song. Great songwriting by Hetfield. More poignant by the fact he grew up with a Christian Scientist mother who died of cancer
Don't Tread on Me. Simply put, America Fuck Yeah music. Also, first time ever performance!! ;D

Aside from a few songs here and there, I don't really enjoy anything they've put out after Black Album (and that one's just okay.) I'm a big fan of Newstead's live vocals and not a fan of Lars. (Ever.) I've never seen them live, and I'm sure that they're still energetic enough to justify their ticket prices, but if it wasn't for the special setlists and the rest of the bill, I wouldn't even consider going to this.

they definitely are still very energetic, i saw them at MSG in 2009 and played an amazing setlist
That Was Just Your Life The End of the Line Creeping Death The Shortest Straw Fade to Black Broken, Beat & Scarred My Apocalypse Sad But True One The Judas Kiss The Day That Never Comes Master of Puppets Dyers Eve Nothing Else Matters Enter Sandman
Last Caress Trapped Under Ice Seek & Destroy
although i agree, if it weren't for playing RTL and the Black Album live and the amazing undercard, i probably wouldnt go either

i hope the undercard shows won't be that crowded. all of my friends that are obsessed with metallica are saying things like "metallica is awesome everyone else on that line up is awful" and then the ones that like the undercard are saying "metallica is the worst band on that line up" and then i find myself not agreeing with either of those things, because metallica were my favorite band when i was in middle/high school and modest mouse is my current favorite band
also is it weird that i am equally as excited (and maybe even more excited) for this than bonnaroo this year?
Metallica was the main reason I wanted to go to Bonnaroo in '08. And damn did they put on a fuckin awesome show! This was their playlist and man was it filled with old songs (They played Whiplash for Christ's sakes!)
The Ecstasy of Gold (Intro) 1.Creeping Death 2.For Whom the Bell Tolls 3.Ride the Lightning 4.Harvester of Sorrow 5.The Unforgiven 6....And Justice for All 7.No Remorse 8.The Memory Remains 9.Fade to Black 10.Master of Puppets 11.Whiplash 12.Nothing Else Matters 13.Sad But True 14.One 15.Enter Sandman
Encore: 16.Last Caress 17.So What 18.Seek & Destroy
Thanks to Metallica and my good friends convincing me to go (Dan'Roo being one of them) I was able to discover Bonnaroo. Been loving 'Roo ever since ;D

I'm surprised your friends who like Metallica are not into Avenged Sevenfold. I'm looking forward to seeing those bands play back to back. As far as everything else, I'm excited Orion got Lucero, Cage the Elephant, Arctic Monkeys, and Gaslight Anthem. All bands Bonnaroo didn't pick up this year. So it's looking like a great undercard. As far as your friends saying Metallica is the worst thing on the lineup, If you're there to see Metallica. See fucking Metallica! Their music should give you the attitude of "fuck off to the haters and go rock your face off" It too was my favorite band in junior high and one of my favorites in high school So Metallica is an institution in my life and simply put, there's very few bands that rock as hard as Metallica does live.
And no it is not weird you are excited about this as much as Bonnaroo. I actually like the lineup a little bit more than Bonnaroo. But Orion doesn't have the all night parties and the great Inforoo community. So Bonnaroo, you are still my number one girl even though you might have to deal with my crazy East Coast ex that is Orion. All I know, is that June will murder my wallet but will definitely be worth it.
Did anyone get into those 4 anniversary shows in San Francisco? Those setlists are balls out......definitely worth checking out. Endless special guests.....Lemmy, Ozzy, Iommi, Cantrell, Mustaine etc etc etc
