Eh, they're not, but I just feel like dance music live shows are moving towards the point where its less about the music and more about the ragin' light show brah. I could personally do without all the screens and lasers and such unless it's something really unique. It shouldn't be a standard for a successful DJ to have to drop millions of dollars on absurd lighting rigs, when they can barely DJ, and instead maybe spend some money on some new audio equipment so you can actually do cool things while DJing instead of just pretending that the knobs you are turning are actually mapped to something.
I mean seriously, some of the fake knob turning is getting ridiculous. I caught like 5 minutes of Datsik's coachella set on the stream and the dude was seriously the worst fake knob turner I've ever seen, and I don't know if people are just too intimidated by DJ equipment to realize that those knobs don't do anything, but they seriously don't. If someone is turning knobs and it doesn't sound like anything is changing, it's not because you don't understand how DJ equipment works, it's because NOTHING is changing.
Skrillex is the worst at being a live DJ. I've seen a few videos of him performing and literally does NO mixing live. From what I gathered he has one button for beat repeat and one knob to do EQ sweeps

This thread sounds like a bunch of bitter old men whining about Skrillex. You sure do talk about him a lot for a bunch of folks that hate him so bad. I have no interest in seeing most of the headliners, but I'm not hanging out at their threads whining.

I never understood the "OMG he's totally not mixing live he SUCKS" argument. Do you stand in the crowd in awe of DJs' abilities to turn knobs and push sliders?

This is a message board dude. The whole point is to get one and talk about stuff. If I want to come share my opinion on Skrillex then I can.
Complaining about people complaining is just as bad.
But I guess that means I'm complaining about people complaining about people complaining. Uh oh.

As an aspiring producer yes I do actually. I respect talent and a good show. Just like I wouldn't enjoy a rock show if someone got on stage and strummed their guitar in a dull lifeless way, I don't enjoy an EDM show when all that's going on is the DJ hitting the space bar.
FlyLo and SBTRKT are both prime examples of great producers who really bring their music to life in a live setting.
If you can't mix live (like Skrillex can't) then why even bother pretending to do it?

If a guitarist strums lifelessly it will affect the sound and energy of the performance. If Skrillex pre-mixed an incredible set and pressed play and jumped around, it wouldn't change the sound or energy one bit. I'm not saying its respectable and i'm not defending Skrillex's lack of live mixing talent...but I am saying what's the big deal? I'd have fun regardless of whether he mixed live or pressed play, as long as the mix is good.
I feel like you can't really compare live bands to live DJ's. They're completely different breeds. I'll get downvoted to hell over this, but I don't care. I completely understand from a live mixing standpoint he's a joke, but that's not going to affect my enjoyment of his show.
Well then if you're going to just hit play and jump around and smoke cigarettes at least have a good light show or stage set up. At least more than just a big screen with a robot mimicking your ever move. Look at Sphongle or Pretty Lights or something. They are great live producers. But even if they weren't they have some good eye candy on stage.

If a guy is "turning knobs and pushing sliders" he's not just pressing play on a pre-recorded mix.
And I never argued that...i'm confused. All I said was that I don't understand why people care about the talent of a DJ to mix live when no person goes to a show to watch the DJ turn knobs and push sliders. I get that it might upset people that some guy is going up and pushing play when other DJs put a lot of time and effort into mixing live, but whether they're mixing live or not doesn't affect the quality of the sound...that's my only point here.
So you completely agree that Skrillex has a godawful live show? Because he is who I was referring to when I said have more than a giant robot on screen mimicking your every move.

I'm not a fan of skrillex, so I'll be elsewhere during his set having an awesome time and not worrying about his producer v. entertainer cred. Him being on LN Which makes perfect sense to me. He has lots of fans and recent critical acclaim, so he gets a coveted slot.

I've never seen him live, so I can't comment on that. But i'll get to in a couple weeks

I don't know if this is what Skrillex does (video below) or not but if it is then I'd say it takes some talent to do this stuff live. IF he just presses play and dances then that's lame. Does anyone know for sure? I'm ignorant with all things dubstep.
Doing stuff like that in a live setting and being able to make it awesome/danceable is pretty cool......but I keep hearing about people who just hit play on an ipod/laptop.....who does things like this? And who just hits play?

I major in music tech and have a huge interest in stuff like this. I love watching what the dj/producer/whatever is doing almost as much as I like listening to the music. It's really fascinating. So I have watched quite a few videos of Skrillex live and I can safely say he mostly just hits play. He has maybe 2 or 3 buttons mapped (beat repeat, delay, EQ sweep) that he sometimes tinkers with but that is all. For the most part he just lets the song play and smokes cigarettes/drinks/jumps around.
Some people that do this stuff well live are Fly Lo, Pretty Lights, Daedalus, Nosaj Thing, and quite a few others.
(this isn't really "live", but really cool nonetheless)
these are some good examples. Skrillex does NOTHING like this.

Daft Punk does almost no live mixing, correct?
edit: this is what I was thinking of. I don't have enough technical knowledge to know where this lands on the scale of live mixing.
Pitchfork: Can you talk a bit about your live setup? What are you guys actually doing up there? How much room is there for improvisation?
TB: Our setup is very different than the live shows we were doing in 1997. Instead of many of the old drum machines, synths, and sequencers we were using at the time, we created similar virtual kits in a software-based environment, controlling the music computers that are offstage via ethernet remote controls inside our pyramid, with moog synthesizers alongside. We have always been thinking about different ways to perform electronic music, i.e. music made with machines. In the end, we really consider ourselves operators of the system that we built for this show.
The show, which is as much a musical experience than a visual experience, is very structured and precise, following a strict setlist. It uses in a way an abstract narration. There is indeed a level of improvisation where we can distort and shuffle the music patterns, samples, and loops in each phase of the show within fixed cue points, but at the same time there is a constant result that we are trying to achieve each night while performing and operating our system-- quite similar in spirit to a broadway show for example: If you go see a musical two nights in a row, the performances are different yet similar.
Plus it's Daft Punk. By now they have earned to right to do what they want. When Skrillex is as important to electronic music as Daft Punk is then I will stop complaining about him.
EDIT: I think all they are really saying in that Pitchfork article is they are breaking away from their analogue gear and switching to more digital stuff than they used in the past.

Coming from someone who is looking forward to his set in two weeks....that is pathetic.
AraabMuzik kills it in this video Can't even imagine moving that fast...
edit: Thank you ALBRT0 BLSLM! I knew it was something simple that I was overlooking. Felt like my grandmother trying to use the computer for a minute there.
Some of you guys are bumming me out. There needs to be a new "excited to see Skrillex" thread. I only come on inforoo for practical knowledge and to pump myself up for the fest, not to hate on the acts that noone is forcing you to go see.

A buddy of mine DJs at a few local bars, and I often times come hang out with him behind his gear and watch him do his thing.
There's a fair amount of process in seamlessly transitioning live from one song to another. He has to match keys, lay out a transition, throw in a couple loops, and mess around with the timing all on the fly. It's awesome to see him work, because 75% of the time it's something he's not practiced at all because he's going from one requested song to another requested song.
Tl;dr, the DJ at the local bar puts on a more talented live mix than Skrillex.
Haters gonna hate. That's something my 12 year old sister would say. Which is the typical Skrillex fan.
It's pretty sad that you're this committed to hating on Skrillex. I think Unchained playing late night is one of the lamest things Bonnaroo has done in the (going on) 6 years I've been, but I'm not constantly talking shit.
Yep, looks like all he does is turn a few knobs and get the crowd excited. People hate on Girl Talk for the same thing and his show in 09 was one of the most fun experiences I'll probably ever have in my life. This year, I'll be at Flying Lotus and I'll be at Skrillex. I know before I get to the farm which music will sound better, which is more intricate, etc, but I'm still going to have fun at Skrillex.
All you're doing is acting like a d-bag on the internet, where it's easy to act like a d-bag. I guess, keep up the good work.
