I have this habit of listening to the songs I love over and over and then I have to force myself to break out of that and listen to some I'm not as familiar with and of course I end up loving those as well. You really can't go wrong with any of them. I think At the Beach was just one that for pushed to the side for another one but now I'm sure I'll obsessing over that one now too!
(if you haven't heard his solo work called "New Jersey Transient" you should check it out...not bad...but then again, he can do no wrong in my book!)
Has Bob been playing with any regularity lately? I know he played Greensboro, NC but with his daughter in treatment I don't know how much he's traveling.

I've seen them twice, including once at the farm, and loved both times. I have a feeling that this will be a huge conflict for me, though, so I may end up having to skip them. Sad : ( but I think that they may, one day, get big enough to headline. If not, they're already headlining smaller fests, so I'm sure I'll be able to catch an unopposed slot at some festie in the near future.

He was at the Dec 30th show and I think that was only the second one he had played with them in a while. He was wearing a St Judes shirt <3. I'm guessing that he will be there but with his life so up in the air I wouldn't be surprised if something came up. Has Bob been playing with any regularity lately? I'd never hate on a dude who can play an upright bass like he can. I just don't care for his singing voice? I do love Bob though, not to the extent you do though
Got tickets to see them in NYC in May. Can't wait. Have only seen them at festivals so far.
Avetts at their own shows >>>> Avetts at festivals
I am assuming that you are seeing them at Terminal 5, it is going to be a great venue for them. They rock the place with so much energy when it is a smaller, dark place. While I love them at fest (that's where I first listened to them) but I feel like their energy gets lost a little in bigger venues.

This is one of the reasons I'm pumped to see them. I missed out on seeing them at Radio City a year or so ago but I heard from a friend it just isn't the same in the big venue when you have seats. I was excited to see they'd be playing a relatively smaller venue so I had to jump on the tickets right away.

More than it being larger venues, I think festivals dilute the amount of people who are huge fans. When I first saw them in the TN Theatre, it was great because every person in the place was singing along with every single song. When I saw them at Bonnaroo, the percentage of people singing along didn't reach 100% even during "I and Love and You".

Scratch that... Roo will be the 11th time. Guess I'm seeing them in Pittsburgh this month! And the averts small shows are definitely better. Roo '10 was boring compared to the bar shows and smaller venues they used to play around here. Back when tickets were free or under $15... I had to shell out 48 a ticket a few moments ago...
I think the Avetts slip nicely into the Mumford slot on Saturday on Which. Which would be totally awesome.
Technically, Mumford slipped into the Avetts spot from the year before. But yeah, that time slot is probably correct. Hopefully, Bonnaroo learned from their mistakes last year and put the acoustic band with a huge following on What Stage. Mumford was a clusterquack on Which

Mumford was a quiet cluster quack. I'm hoping that the avetts can play a bit later than that though. They've grown even more in the last 2 years. Also... Hope it rains a lil during their set again!

they're playing in pittsburgh but the tickets are crazy expensive! so i'll just hold out for seeing them at roo if they are no big conflicts. i've seen them five or six times now at festivals and at their own shows and they really are just a solid, solid band, such a great energy live. i didn't really "get" them until i saw them live, either.

Saw them Wednesday night at Terminal 5. It was amazing. Bob was playing with them (he's had some personal issues the last few times I've seen them and had to miss) and the whole show was great. Here's a setlist:
An evening with...
Will you return Tin Man Traveling song Distraction #74 Paranoia in Bb Major At the beach -> Pretty Girl from Cedar lane Prettiest Thing Down with the Shine Slight Figure of Speech Salina Shame Denouncing November Blue Head Full of Doubt/Road Full of Promise The Fall Once and Future Carpenter Gimme a kiss Murder in the City Ballad of Love and Hate Closer walk with thee Laundry room I Killed Sallys Lover Go to Sleep Kick drum Heart I and Love and You
E: January wedding Matrimony Talk on Indolence
A review from Terminal 5 (not mine): With unending energy and plenty of rowdy, country-music-tinged moments, the Avett Brothers put on a remarkable show for a sold-out audience last night at Terminal 5. Their sound, which ranged from AM radio to markedly twangy, never fell flat to any of the dancing fans in the venue. And this was no post–I and Love and You bandwagon crowd. It was several thousand unabashed people unafraid to get their hoedown on.
The two-brother band, from North Carolina, started the two-hour set with peppier offerings like “Tin Man” and “The Traveling Song,” but quickly made full use of the rest of their expanded lineup by pumping out heavy doses of cello and upright bass to go along with Scott Avett’s banjo. The songs grew louder and wilder, leading to some of the best moments of the night during “At the Beach,” which slowly wound down and transitioned into darkness for “Pretty Girl from Cedar Lane.”
But as lively as the set often turned, it was the quietest few songs that really hit home. Scott and Seth Avett took turns at the front of the stage, guitars unplugged, to sing into a single microphone. The eerily still crowd watched Scott perform the painfully personal “If I Get Murdered in the City,” followed by Seth doing “The Ballad of Love and Hate.” Before the full band returned, third full-time member Bob Crawford joined them for the traditional gospel song “Just a Closer Walk with Thee,” another anachronistic moment the band’s screaming fans embraced with open arms and wild cheers. —Sean O’Kane
Great to hear Bob is back playing with them more and his Daughter is cancer free. I imagine there is still a ways to go and that he will still be missing some shows, but still good news all around.

Yea I imagine it's been really rough but I had a huge smile on my face when I saw him come out on stage. Was glad to see him again and the whole show was fantastic. Hopefully he's at Roo but we'll see.
Great pics! We are seeing them tomorrow night in Cleveland. We have 7th row which is the closest we've been so far.
Glad to hear about Bob's daughter as well. Would love to see him tomorrow but I know it will probably be hit and miss for awhile.
And I'm so hoping we get Ballad of Love and Hate. Although if they just played it, they might not tomorrow. It's my husband's favorite song and I'd love to see it in our sort of hometown.

Excellent, I hadn't read that yet!!! Cancer sucks when you're dealing with it yourself but I always said I couldn't imagine if my kid had it

I think it was a rare brain tumor and not cancer (though if they are considered the same thing then please educate my ignorant mind because I'm pretty clueless with this stuff). Either way, it's awesome that things are looking up and I can't imagine what it must be like to go through all of that.
On a happier note, here's the three band members singing at the show I just saw:
Scott, Seth and Joe gave an interview on a radio show before the Morgantown show on April 20th and they talked about Bob and I think Scott was the one that said she was cancer free. I think that was the first that anyone had heard that.
Here's the interview if you want to check it out. You can only listen, it's about 17 min long. It's a good interview though.

When I saw them at Bonnaroo, the percentage of people singing along didn't reach 100% even during "I and Love and You".
The crowd singing at the Avetts 2010 Bonnaroo show pretty much killed the vibe for me. I could hear all the ladies singing better than the band.
This year I'm looking forward to Bon Iver the most, and I'm hoping the crowd singing won't really bother me, seeing that it's so hard to understand what Justin is singing anyways.
