I have never really got into the Avetts for some reason. All my friends love them but I guess I just dont get it. I don't see what seperates them from anyother folk/bluegrass act?
Edit: I don't dislike them. I just don't get why people love them

ooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo don't call them bluegrass! You're likely to piss people off
To me, I love a lot of their lyrics and harmonies. I also like the uptempo, boot stomping stuff they'll play live. Some of the content of their songs I can really relate to. I think like most musical acts you either feel a connection or you don't.

What are some more of their upbeat, boot stompy stuff ITM? I've liked some of their songs like that (Kick Drum Heart I love) but the majority of their material just bores me.

While the audio quality isn't best this gives you the feel for what I'm talking about. These two songs are great examples of the high energy/upbeat songs of theirs that I really like:
Here's the studio version of Talk of Indolence (the second song on that vid) that really hooked me from the first time I heard it. When they play it live it's even better but this version is fantastic too IMO:
Screw it.....here's a better quality version of live:
The opening lyrics:
Well I’ve been lockin' myself up in my house for sometime now Readin' and writin' and readin' and thinkin' and searching for reasons and missing the seasons. The Autumn, the Spring, the Summer, the snow. The record will stop and the record will go. Latches latched the windows down, the dog coming in and the dog going out. Up with caffeine and down with a shot. Constantly worried about what I’ve got. Distracting my work but I can’t make a stop and my confidence on and my confidence off. And I sink to the bottom and rise to the top and I think to myself that I do this a lot. World outside just goes it goes it goes it goes it goes it goes... and witness it all from the blinds of my window. THREE, FOUR
Also a fan of Distraction #74. Here's a live video with another decent song after:
Studio version:
Traveling Song is another I really like. Here's someone's video from the show I was just at (gets particularly fun around 2:13):
There's some more probably....gotta remember the names though...will post more here

I honestly don't know what it is about them but I haven't been this affected by music in a long, long time. I don't know if it's the place I am at in my life but their lyrics really speak to me. There's a song for every mood, for every kind of situation. It's almost like they are my own personal therapist. They are amazing writers and musicians and if you know anything about them they are the real deal. They are so honest and raw and it really comes through in their lyrics and music.
If you haven't been able to get into them by now you probably won't. I think either they "speak" to you or they don't.
I am really looking forward to their return to the farm. I still listen to the live rip of their last performance on the Which stage. For me, it's near perfect. Luckily, I get to see them next weekend in Columbus before heading down to the farm.
Ya I highly recommend seeing them live. They are just one of those bands that it doesn't click for a lot of people until seeing them live. Listen to the last 2-3 records and the new one when it comes out and go see their show. I can pretty much guarantee you will have a great time even it isn't the type of stuff you would normally listen to.
If anyone is going to the Pittsburgh show on Sunday rumor is their dad Jim Avett might be there doing a few songs with them. I guess he just had a show there last night or the night before himself and told someone that he was sticking around for their show.
I have seen them many, many times, and they always get better. Quite frankly, I was shocked to have to go through 3 pages to even find their thread in here! So proud to share my home state with them and to have seen them in my hometown of Greensboro. These men can put on a show, and to those who say the music bores them, I can guarantee you the live performance will not. And to any straight females, they are not bad to look at, either.
This will be my first Bonnaroo, period, so naturally, my first time seeing them in this venue, or even in a festival setting for that matter, and I am ridiculously excited.
Probably a guarantee they'll play the new "Once and Future Carpenter," which, for old-school Avett fans, is a refreshing contrast to the poppier tunes of I&L&Y. I personally love their scope of sound and how they develop from album to album, but this new track encompasses everything I love about an Avett song. It brings me to tears every time I hear it.
My boyfriend made me a die-hard fan, but it took a few hours of him playing non-stop Avetts for me to come around, and some time paying close attention to the poetic lyrics.
Look for the tiny girl front and center bouncing around in a teardrop bandanna trying to lock eyes with Scott. datz m3.
Any fans have guesses on what their set will consist of, or what you're hoping to hear?
-- Here's a clip of them singing "The Fall" with G. Love. Pretty spectacular.
In 2008 I didn't know who they were, so I kinda missed out on a intimate show, and in 2010 they were playing against Isis and The Melvins, so I couldn't miss that. But this year I will be seeing them and I'm real happy.
I see The Avett Brothers don't list Bonnaroo on their tour dates anymore and the Phone App now shows their time slot on Fri as Null. Anyone know if this they had to cancel their show or is it just an error?
They are from Concord, about 10 mins away from where I live. Everybody and their grandparents know of them here. First time I saw them, I had only heard the name (from other local bands), never actually listened to them, and some friends of mine drug me to their CD release party at a record store in Charlotte. I had honestly at the time never seen such energy from an acoustic act and I was hooked. Then they blew up and only play arena's around here now and most of the time I can't really afford to go to too many of those, but I am stoked to see them on the main stage at Bonnaroo.
The Avett Brothers were one of my favorite bands 2 summers ago. I even went to a John Mayer concert just so I could see them open.
But I must say, I've grown a little tired of their music. Part of me really wants to see them at Bonnaroo, and part of me wants to see Little Dragon and Trampled by Turtles instead. Hmm. I wish I could have seen a good show of theirs in the past, which would make this decision easier as I have never seen Little Dragon or Tramped by Turtles, but as I said, the Avett Brothers show I did see was simply a shortened opening set.

My guess/hope is that they had posted the general festival dates before, but then they took it down with the schedule drop and were going to replace it with the exact date and then that fell through the cracks. Seems a little far fetched but since they're still on the Roo site and pollstar and whatnot it's possible. Weirder things have happened.
I'm trying not to lose perspective--the Avetts/Trampled by Turtles conflict is my worst by far, so I could certainly make do--but I'd be pretty crushed if this turned out that they had to bail. My wife and I travelled to Hawaii last summer and it just so happened that they were scheduled to play out there--and then they had to cancel. This would make two summers in a row, so it'd be really disappointing.
I was panicking last night when the Bonnaroo app glitched up on my phone. Honestly, my first terrifying thought was that something happened with Bob's daughter and they canceled!
Trampled by Turtles are always playing small, intimate shows around me at really cheap prices, so that's how I'm looking at it. Obviously, anyone at Bonnaroo is going to be more exciting than a tiny venue in our hometowns, but I'd rather see the Avetts in this context and check dem Turtles out elsewhere for cheaper.
And if you've never experienced a real, live Avett show, just do itttttttt. You will never be disappointed.
I just feel like the time to see the Avett Brothers has passed. Same with Bon Iver and the Black Keys. I used to love all three of those bands, but now have little desire to see them.
The more intimate Trampled by Turtles tent performance seems more appealing. But I'm still on the fence.
I REALLY want to see Trampled by Turtles but they are still playing small places all the time and since the Avetts are one of my favorites I have to see them at Bonnaroo, it would just be wrong not to.
I'm not sure as a fan how you can get bored with their music. They have such an extensive catalogue and their songs are all so different. There's a song for every type of mood and I love that it all sounds so different from each other. Now Bon Iver and the Black Keys I could see that a bit because all their songs pretty much sound the same but not the Avetts.
Scott just gave an interview with a "tentative" date of August for the new album.

I seem to be in the minority here--which is fine, please tell me why I must be wrong, because I want to be wrong--but I'm really starting to think that the Avetts have canceled their Bonnaroo set and that it just hasn't been announced yet.
It doesn't really make sense either way. It doesn't make much sense if they canceled--I imagine it would take something pretty earth-shattering for them to cancel such a major show barely a week in advance, and it's hard to imagine such an issue affecting ONLY this ONE date (their website still lists their 6/7 show, followed by a VERY busy summer!). On the other hand, if it's a mistake, wouldn't they have fixed it by now? A couple of people have posted on their facebook about it, and I tweeted at their cellist--no response. It seems like it would take all of five minutes for someone to fix it.
It's easiest for me to believe that the Avetts had to bail for some reason, and Bonnaroo is keeping a lid on it (keeping them in the lineup, schedule, etc) until they can get a replacement booked and confirmed (a pretty tall order this late in the game).

We must be fairly close! I live about 10 minutes away also. Had only gotten into them in the past 2 years, only been to 3 shows. Incredibly nice staff that the band has as well. Had great experiences at each of the shows i've been to.
I noticed somebody else asking about this on their forum. Hopefully they are still on, i'll send out a few emails to people I know in their organization. If they have to back out, hopefully they will move Trampled By Turtles to that slot...that's my biggest conflict also.
I'm thinking it is just a glitch. I know I received a Bonnaroo phone app update yesterday and after I loaded it, The Avett Brothers slot on my schedule appeared again.
This will be my 4th time to see the Bros in the last year. The Hangout last May, Knoxville in October and Chattanooga in December. I plan to be in the pitt at Roo.

We were at the Knoxville and Chatt shows too. As much as I want to see some of the other bands and I've seen Avetts several times it's hard not to see them again. I just love them and their songs so much.
