"A lineup for the festival is still to come, but Pensacola native Gus Brandt has been hired to book the festival’s musical talent. A long-time industry pro, Brandt has spent more than 15 years as road manager for Grammy Award-winning rock superstars Foo Fighters, and also has worked tours for acts such as blink-182, Weezer, Conan O’Brien and Eminem. Brandt started his career as a concert promoter in Pensacola, bringing such acts as Social Distortion, Primus, the Offspring, the Flaming Lips, Helmet and Soundgarden to town in the 1980s."

That guy they interviewed is right. They need headliners people would be willing to travel for, and they need to announce them up front. It just seemed sad last year when they brought in Linkin Park after the rest of the announcement had been announced.

DeLuna truly is the best kept secret and I can only hope they'll sustain well enough until word catches on, but part of me doesn't. Last year, it felt as though I had my own personal festival. I had the best time there. White beachs and waterfront stages? I stood on the beaches all day. Get real! Nothing like it.
And to be honest, Linkin Park was one of the weaker links for me, as far as headliners go. Its not DeLuna's fault they cancelled. Bro had surgery, right? It would have been fun to have seen them, but they boasted a brilliant line-up, in my opinion. Jane's Addiction was hilarious, they had New Pornos, The Shins, Girl Talk, CAKE, Cut Copy, Ladytron, Matt & Kim, Ra Ra Riot, The Constellations, etc etc. The lineup was phenom. I think head count suffered in 2011 because they revamped their demographic perspective. There were a ton more indie acts than they had the year before and people just didn't quite know what to make of it. Additionally, I think they did a terrible job promoting it. I listened to the local radio stations while driving in. These stations were in a screamo-rock format and trying to get people to come out to an indie festival.
They need a major marketing overhaul. Other than that, they're fantastic. The food is cheap, the beer is insanely cheap for a festival ($3 for tall boys and $5 for mixed drinks. I know, rite?)
I'm incredibly bummed, however, because on the SAME day I agreed to be my best friend's bridesmaid in her wedding on Sept. 22nd, they announced the dates for this year's weekend. I'm PISSED! It was in October last year. I thought I was safe!

The lineup was strong last year, but it didn't have the kind of names that get people to travel. Most of those bands had already played several festivals early in the year. They were also competing with Voodoo (who had bigger names like Soundgarden and the Raconteurs, plus an already established brand) and Moogfest (who had rare acts like Tangerine Dream and a unique, strongly curated lineup). It's probably good that they moved to September.
DeLuna is amateur hour 100%. The only good thing about it is being able to get in the water. One of the absolute lamest crowds I've ever seen.........endless hordes of navy dudes acting like complete retards.
Fest is modeled completely after Hangout. The Saturday of the fest yesterday was a lot of good music, but is not you're normal festi crowd at all.

Kinda funny, When I was at Lolla last year it was a completely different type of people as Hangout, both great festivals, but different "festival crowds". I just hope for the best, as I am glad it happens in my hometown. btw, I was in the navy, stationed in pensacola, Not real sure what you are getting at
What I'm saying is that the Naval base in Pensacola is chock full of obnoxious jackasses that give the service a bad name.
Two examples; 1. While up front waiting for Jane's Addiction, there is a pack of about 15 schwilly Navy-brahs, who can't stop screaming as loud as possible just to make noise. My buddy has white hair down to his waist and was turned talking to me and one of them starts stroking his hair and he thought it was a chick and flipped out. Then tried to get buck with us for pointing out that "100 sailors go out to sea, 50 couples come back to shore."
2. After we got away from them, I am dancing in the water, under the moonlight, with manta rays swimming around me, during Jane Says, a truly sublime moment for me, and three Navy boys come right next to me and chunk all of their beer trash into the water. I made them clean that shit up.
Overall, there is an abundance of teenagers and Navy rookies with no respect for others, lack of common sense and just general bad behavior. I've been going to Pcola shows since '99 and shows there are never as good as other cities because of bad vibes brought in by schwag sailors. (Plenty of good ones around, but you don't notice people acting right, you only notice the bullshit)

I see what you mean...but to be fair, the trash problem was way worse at Hangout, which was mostly ragers, so thats a bad argument. Seems like you really pigeon-hole the navy, same way some people pigeon-hole hippies I am both
Keep in mind there is going to be a unique mix of people at a brand-spakin'-new fest like this one. They still need to establish themselves and with it only being in its second year in 2011 while competing with itself for a new image, it is going to be a bit shaky. They went a completely different route last year than they went the year before.
The boyfriend and I spent the majority of Friday night sitting in a hot tub listening to CAKE, Ladytron, Weezer, etc with a group of Navy boys and they were incredibly well behaved and respectful. What you ran into didn't reflect my experiences at all. In fact, people didn't behave like hooligans until the last night and it actually happened at our hotel. Some drunk couple got into a fight and the dude threw a 3 foot flower pot through someone's window and the girlfriend was threatening to jump off of the roof. It was insane.
I love the location. LOVE that its at a beach. And I also love it for the price, it was certainly worth it in every capacity. For only being in its second year, they're on the track to a successful fest, IMO.

I was really happy to see that this fest will be back. I agree, Inky, they did not promote well at all last year. i only found out about this fest while looking at tour dates for GLO. I felt like it was a festival all for me. I loved how so many of the artists got into the crowds, literally. And yes the trash on the beach at hangout was terrible. We would get up in the morning to go down to the ocean and there was just tons of beer cans and trash lining the beach. I also did not experience any misbehaving Navy dudes. Early Bird goes on sale march 1st and I will be getting my ticket. Hoping for a great lineup
I'm also happy to see DeLuna Festival back. My wife and I have been to both and both have been a great time. Last year, we even brought our kids, who had fun dancing and playing on the beach. One of the highlights for me from last year was going to see Trombone Shorty and it being so empty, that my son and I could play Frisbee, just off to the side of the stage.
I do admit that I preferred the layout the previous year, where the main stages were side by side and you didn't have to trudge back and forth through the sand. If you got there early, you could set up in front of either one of the main stages and see both stages, no problem.
But regardless, I'll be picking early bird tickets as soon as they go on sale.
Earlybirds were super cheap last year.....but if you waited till the fest you could get two people in for like $75. VIP for $150-200.....might make sense to wait, but who knows they might get a heater lineup. I'm personally gonna wait this time and try to score a VIP. It was irritating how big the VIP section was last year at the main stage.
What were the closest hotels to the fest site? Not the ones that are technically inside the festival. Gonna see about getting a cheap room now
I don't think they are going to have the 3 hotels in the festival site this year. I figured if they were they would have announced the early bird hotel packages. However, I hear the travellodge is the cheapest across the street from the site
I am from Pensacola, have lived here almost my whole life. Deluna fest was one of the best times ive had on Pensacola Beach. Its rare to see good festivals or even shows in this area being surrounded by retired people. I hope to see more supporters next year. Just keep the bayfest fans and bands away!
It was maybe 4 blocks (at most) from the entrance to the festival, so the boy and I took roady cups for the walk over. It is such a gorgeous area and we didn't regret not staying at one of the "nicer" chains that were inside the festival. In fact, on Friday night, we were so drunk that we wandered into the Marriott's poolside area and drank some more and some more while hanging in the hot tub and pools. It was AH-some.
And there's this killer hot dog place in the shopping center next to the hotel. Also, there was an outdoor restaurant attached to the hotel and a dock, so beach bums and tourists alike all hung around this spot. I loved it!
Even better about this hotel is that we were able to bring our dog, so if you're worried about leaving pets at home, this place accepts animals. Even cooler.
Its not "nice" by anyone's standard. Its tiny and kinda sketchy, but it was convenient, affordable and the staff was super nice.
Keep an eye on it. Just like flights, hotel prices fluctuate. I feel like we booked the hotel maybe a month and a half before the fest and it wasn't more than $120 a night.

Much more news to follow...
I'll prob be picking up a local discount pass today if they don't sell out before I get off of work.
I barely got mine as well, I hear they sold out at 6 pm. Glad I didn't wait until last minute. Anyone hear rumors about the lineup yet?
yeah, I raced from work and got to Seville at 4:30. It freaked me out a bit when they posted on facebook that only 100 tickets remained as of 4pm, but thankfully I got there in time!
I haven't heard anything yet, but with the hiring of Gus Brandt to handle booking this year, I am feeling very optimistic...at least enough to have bought an early bird ticket. Considering he is the Foo Fighters' tour manager, I believe it is safe to put them as an early favorite for one of the headliner spots.

Yeah man, I actually have random high hopes for Deluna this go round also. Wasnt able to get my tickets when they were doing the leap day deal, however I'm sure I'll end up cavin' and buying them soon. Aren't they suppose to announce the lineup later this month or early next month? That's so soon for it to be so far off, but that's awesome! Does anyone know when there will be another price hike?
I snagged one just in time...if the lineup blows or something better comes up, I shouldn't have too much of a problem getting my money back. Still gonna look for somebody sellin' cheap VIP tix closer to the fest date though.
