*And yeah, lets not get too crazy in here. The Cure/Depeche Mode/Portishead are not happening.
Woah. Sigur Ros as a headliner would rock my world. Talk about life-affirming.
Also, I agree on the three you listed as outside the realm of possibility. Depeche Mode and The Cure are simply too big for Moogfest and Portishead would've probably played last year if they were ever going to play.

Let me be clear, though: not to jinx it, but this festival could book Skrillex, Pretty Lights, and Drake (three artists I absolutely detest) as headliners and I'd still go because the festival is that awesome logistically and location-wise. Plus, I'm positive that the undercard will be positively stacked with must-sees regardless of the headliners.
Yeah, I'm hoping for either Kraftwerk or New Order to be on the bill, both of those would be ridiculous, especially if Justice and Sigur Ros are on there as well.

I don't think ever in a million years Moog would book Skrillex or Drake. Those artists wouldn't appeal to but a very small % of their ticket buyers and it would cost too much for groups most ppl don't want.

That would be incredible. Underworld is very near the top of my all-time wish-list.

How did everyone like the cabin last year? What were the dissadvantages? I'm assuming being so far from the venues is one.
Trying to decide whether to book a hotel downtown or go a cabin route.
Downtown Inn! All the way. Being able to walk to venues within minutes is priceless. Especially after a day/night of drinking. It's nice to have a huge cooler of beer in your room for pregaming too! There was some amazing beer in that cooler (Mostly thanks to RunningRaleigh).
Welcome back Bonz, but I do not find it strange that your presence being requested in the Orgy thread and then you showing up, like it was the quacking Bonzai Bat Signal.

I was just thinking of a worst-case scenario for the headliners for my personal tastes. That said, I do think they'd book Skrillex, though. You're probably right about Drake, but I don't think Moogfest is going to shy away from electronic artists like Skrillex that are hugely popular but might not have critical acclaim or (debatably) much artistic credibility.
The bottom line is, Skrillex is an electronic artist that would sell tickets for an electronic music festival. In my opinion, that was the role of Pretty Lights on the 2010 lineup. It was pretty much absent from the 2011 lineup, but in that sense I think we just got lucky with the 2011 lineup.
I kind of expect that Skrillex will be on the bill this year to sell tickets but will be off-set (for the board at least) by a bunch of awesome names on the top line that the board'll be excited about (i.e. Sigur Ros, Kraftwerk, etc.)

Nah. They were pushing the Orange Peel Skrillex show hard. I wouldn't doubt to see his name #3 on the headliners.
Ok, I am in 100% for Moog this year. I've got my vacation time set aside and approved for the end of October. I'll be driving down, and I'd love to chip in and get in with the cabin folks, if anyone is coordinating that again. It seems like a fun, relatively inexpensive option for lodging. I'd even be ok with bringing my air matress and sleeping on the floor.

Portishead seemed like a real possibility last year, but the window has closed. They just don't tour enough.
Sigur Ros, Justice, and Kraftwerk all make sense. Skrillex makes slightly less sense, but I could see it happening. It might piss people off to see his name on the lineup, but the grumblers will hardly even notice he's there once the festival starts. If there's any festival where the headliners don't matter, it's Moog. Nobody plays unopposed, and there would surely be counterprogrammed options at the Orange Peel or TWA while Skrillex played.

Excellent point. In fact, you could even argue that headliners don't even exist at Moogfest. There's no set spot on the schedule during which the top acts play and, as you said, nobody plays unopposed.
I would imagine they'll get the outdoor venue going again this year, so maybe someone awesome will be playing that during Skrillex.

Best thing about moog 2011, something amazying was ALWAYS playing. 2010 had a good lineup but 2011 was an incredible schedule. They do it so well that only a FEW shows both years have been packed out. Ive never had a problem getting into a show ive wanted to see and only heard of a few people who have.

The drive was not a problem for me. I stayed sober for the most part so i didn't care to drive back and forth. Parking was never an issue. Its all over downtown. If anything I would say if you wanted to go with a group of friends, get a cabin. The first year I went by myself and the only thing that would have made it better was a cabin with friends. Music ends at 3am ish and thats if you make it into the late shows at the smaller venues (these are the only shows that are forsure going to pack out). So going back to a cabin at 2-3am chilling and rehashing the night was awesome. This year I want to get a band to come play the cabin after party, This would be the ultimate for moogfest for me.
Now if I go solo again and don't stay with someone in asheville then I would prob get a hotel somewhere near downtown or something like that. Everything really is within walking distance and that is really the sweetest town to adventure around during the day.
The way I look at it you are going to pay about the same for ethier when its all said in done. I really don't hit up any festivals after aug (though I have almost went to northcoast the past two years for my birthday and last year came really close), so i have plenty time to save up and this year i'll prob be saving even extra early. Its the only one I know for sure I am going to this year. Its prob got the best lineups for my taste. And as everyone has said it ASHEVILLE ROCKS!!!! It is a festival 24/7/ 365! One band commented" I was walking down the street and I saw people in costumes, and i was like oh yeah its halloween. then my bandmate said, no it's just asheville"

Don't tour ENOUGH? Portishead tours more often *and* more recently than Tangerine Dream, so don't discount anything when it comes to Moog headliners. You just never know...

Apples and oranges to some extent. Portishead tours considerably less than most other bands in their position. This is from an interview with Barrow last year:
What prompted the tour now? We never played [2008 album] Third in the States. We only played Coachella so when we got asked to do ATP it seemed like that was our opportunity to go back out and actually play Third to people who haven't seen it. And we started getting calls from festivals in Europe and we haven't played festivals in Europe since 1998 as well, so we thought, "Okay, let's spend a little bit of time and go and enjoy ourselves." And it was actually incredibly enjoyable, which makes a change for us.

This is my official "don't expand capacity again" post.
Last year was fine. There were more people, but adding the outdoor stage made everything stay relatively equal crowding wise. That being said, I think they really are reaching the point where much more and the festival and the city itself just won't be able to handle the crowds (or at least not at the wonderful pace it handles them now). I don't want this fest to become a logistical headache, the fact that it isn't one is one of the biggest perks of it.
If something absolutely has to go up this year, I vote ticket prices rather than capacity.
You guys have completely sold me on Moogfest. I've loved the lineup in past years but disliked the idea of booking a hotel. I figured transportation to and from venues would just be messy. I'm happy to hear no one has had a bad experience with anything like that. I'm just wondering around how much you all have paid in the past for your ticket + lodging for the weekend? My boyfriend's birthday is Oct 30 and I would love to plan this trip for it!

Downtown Inn, perfect location, 100 a night. Not the prettiest, and definitely need some maintenance done, but the employees were kind and helpful, and it was clean.

We split the cabin and if I remember right it was just over 100 per person for the whole weekend, I think we split it 5-6 ways? We did spend quite a bit of money on eating because the food is just that good in Asheville. It was defiantly the cheapest festival or even trip we have had. Once the lineup comes out we will book the hotel since they don't charge you right away but might switch to a cabin again. It was really fun talking the night over with other people, waking up and sharing what we were doing that day and deciding to get back out of bed and go downstairs when friends are playing guitars downstairs. Awesome weekend!
