Coachella was pretty fantastic this year. I completely agree with everyone saying that the production at Coachella is better than Roo. In fact, I think that Coachella as a whole is run a lot better than Roo. However, maybe I was just at the wrong acts, but I thought the crowd this weekend was simply terrible. Possibly the worst I have ever seen in a live music environment. I went to weekend 2 last year and I thought the crowds were fantastic, so it may be that I just got unlucky or it may be that weekend 1 and 2 draw very different crowds. However, this year there were people talking in the middle of sets, tons of full on pushing to get to the front (I know this happens a lot, but it was worse this weekend than I can remember), and crowds that simply didn't seem interested in the band they were seeing. For example, I waited around 4 hours to get close for Phoenix, and instead of being surrounded by Phoenix fans I was surrounded by high schoolers who talked the whole set and were only there because they thought Daft Punk was going to play for 5 minutes.
I dunno. I still had an amazing time, but it's a shame that Goldenvoice manages to put on such an amazing festival but the people who show up manage to cheapen the experience.
Yeah, in general the crowd leaves something to be desired for sure. So much pushing/talking.
I know you hate it since we haven't been there, but I know we talked about how sh*tty the crowd looked at least one night in webchat. It's just a shame to see such great performances being watched by people who aren't into it at all.

People were probably pushing their way to the front because the crowds were so lame. From the webcast, it looked like the party was in the front, while everyone was just kinda chilling towards the back. I woulda pushed upfront too if I was surrounded by people not dancing/enjoying the show. What makes me wonder why they would show up in the first place.(highschoolers im guessing to get loaded off of mommy and daddys dime. Priority 1 should always be the music.

I was in the front for most of it and the crowds were still bad. Around row 5 for Phoenix and people were not into it at all, row 2 for How To Destroy Angels and this girl behind me wouldn't stop yelling to her friend about how great the set is in the quacking middle of songs, and stuff like that. People would push their way in front, record 2 songs, then leave. It was awful.
I'm going to continue going to Coachella because there are amazing shows there every year, but I enjoyed Roo last year so much more due to the crowd seeming to actually be there for the music.
what you are all talking about happens at roo. all of the big shows are plagued by this. this is the reason we avoided all of the big shows last year except Radiohead.

I understand that it happens at Roo as well as every other live music show, however I feel that Coachella's location and large EDM scene draws in a larger crowd of people who spoil the experience than most other events do.

I do always wonder about what the crowds at Roo look like if you were looking at them from the outside. When you are there, you just kind of worry about the little microcosm of space around you and not so much what the crowd as a whole is doing.
Yeah, that was awesome. The production of the whole festival completly blows Bonnaroo out of the water, with the exception of the shuttles, which were an abortion. Blur was fantastic, other highlights were Kurt Vile, Nick Cave, SMD, James Blake and Prydz. The Sahara and Yuma tents were stellar. Prydz in the Sahara was particularly good cause it seemed like all the idiots were off watching WuTang or RHCP. Missed ShoutingMatches and Cloud Nothings because of shuttle malarky. It took 2.5 hours to get in Friday (driver got so lost the passengers had to find someone who spoke Spanish to read the map to him) then only 40 minutes Saturday, then 1.5 hours Sunday. Saturday night it took us 2 hours toget home cause the shuttle just didn't show up. I also have sand in every orfice of my body.
Which line were you taking? I'm on the white line next weekend.
Light Blue. White appeared to be running smoother.

I dunno, I found the crowd at Bonnaroo 2012 to be a breath of fresh air. Tons of real music lovers that were super into the music. In fact I can't recall ANY instance where "talkers" were ruining a set for me, and this happens all the time for me at other shows/festivals. Maybe I just got lucky.
I also love my Jazzfest peeps, and perhaps the best crowd of any fest I attend regularly is at Bear Creek. A bit crunchy, sure, but fans who love the funk are just the best.
Good: 1. Disclosure 2. HTDA 3. Postal Service/Roni Size 4. Tame Impala 5. Huoratron/C2C
Bad: 1. Everyone playing Gobi (horrible sound issues) 2. Violent Femmes (they did not have their shit together) 3. Youth Lagoon (And you thought MGMT was bad live) 4. Grimes (Meh) 5. Pretty Lights (new production is lamer than his old one. But he added lazers, blah! )

Sounds like the worst of the worst kinda people. "OMG move move I gotta record Harlem Shake just to show my friends that I was there!" "Why isnt Benny Bennassi playing Satisfaction on repeat?" I seen the webcast it seemed that the crowds were going in and out all day everywhere. Most likely festival rookies that will regret running around catching glimpses of all the acts instead of plotting out their schedule and making sacrifices. Roosters are better than that.

I have been to many festivals and I very much enjoyed be able to pop in and out of sets all day and catching lots of acts. I also took some pictures and videos of many of the acts I saw on my phone.

I never been to Coachella. But with Made in America and and Firefly as opposed to Roo it just seems like everyone treats it as a sprint and not a marathon. Ive done the same thing some shows. Popped into MGMT my first year to catch the encore. I catch a first half on a stage and go see another band end their set sometimes. My first year Roo/first fest ever was so unorganized it was crazy it just kinda reminds me of that MUST SEE EVERYTHING attitude I had. And for the record I am totally against watching a show from an awesome position through an Iphone.

I have a working theory that the crowd at Weekend 2 is going to be much better.
Here are some facts:
Weekend 1 tickets: the majority were sold in presale prior to the lineup.
Weekend 2 tickets never sold out. Face value tickets are still available via KROQ sale here. (password is KROQCOACHELLA)
After the first couple of hours of tickets being on sale, Weekend 2 was the only option.
Here is my argument:
The weekend 1 people were expecting a lot more, lineup wise.
Lineup came out, and many were dissapointed. This led to rumor speculation.
Before the fest even begins, people are already a little dissapointed, and are expecting some amazing surprise.
Some people were also obligated to go, and not back out, because of travel plans and what not. I'd bet there was a lot of "well I have to go now, I already booked my flight and sh!t blah blah blah"
The weekend 2 people however, they are the ones that want to be there. People going Weekend 2 are people that saw the lineup and felt "quack yeah", and got on the train of positive vibes and bought tickets.
Just a thought.
Remember that the general public is way bigger and way different than everyone thinks on this board. I am talking about the mass group of "erhhmmgerrrrd! daft punk!" people that Coachella attracts, not us smart music fans obviously.
Edit: regarding the lineup: you, I, and most everyone else on this board can agree this lineup kicks major butt. I am speculating that the general public that talks about Coachella down here thinks the lineup isn't that great.
Sounds like the worst of the worst kinda people. "OMG move move I gotta record Harlem Shake just to show my friends that I was there!" "Why isnt Benny Bennassi playing Satisfaction on repeat?" I'm certainly not a festival rookie. I've been to Bonnaroo more times than you have (probably) and have been going to fests of all sizes and shapes for probably 14 years or so. I was "going in and out" all day at Coachella because there was just so much to see. In a lot of cases, I don't mind catching lots of half sets.
Also, I probably took hundreds of pictures on my phone at Coachella. Because, you know, there were lots of awesome visuals that I wanted to capture and be able to live over again.
But please, keep offering your uninformed opinions.
Not that I dont take a few pictures or video my favorite verse of a song from time to time. But the way cgebert made it sound was people were getting the pictures/video not for their personal memories, but to post them on facebook and make people jealous of who they just seen, only to leave the set after a successful post. Its like buying a concert ticket to just go get loaded and have a ticket stub to add to the collection.
