Animal Collective looks like they're going more fragmented and arty on their next album, doubt they make the next step.
AnCo are ready to start headlining festivals. Now weather they want to or not is still yet to be seen. They have way more drawing power then Foster the whoever. They have 10 or so songs that if they would have seen air play would have be mega hits.
What I'm saying is that they wouldn't play those tracks. I saw them at Merriweather last year and they played mostly stuff that will be on the new album, and it was all super weird and great. But a lot of the crowd was antsy to hear My Girls, or Fireworks, or just MPP in its entirety.
I think Gary Clark Jr. definitely has a good shot. Look at the strides hes taken since last year. He needs to just successfully release his album and keep on the path. He certainly has the skill.
As for the hip hop headliner, I'd say Drake. Based upon his popularity, his next album will no doubt be a commercial success, and that alone should put him up toward headlining status.
i could see vampire weekend maybe pre-hl next year. new album is due out end of this year/beginning of next? a couple more successful albums and definitely headlining within 5 years.
Florence (obviously) Fleet Foxes Phantogram (maybe to pre-HL or LN HL) Yeasayer Cut Copy The National (they might already be on the fence here, but in 5 years I see them as a clear cut HL)
Long shot: Them Crooked Vultures. Only a long shot because it's a side project for 2/3 members. If it was the main focus I'd lock them in to headline festivals in 2-3 years from now.
I don't know if it is possible, but I would love to see Umphrey's take over the Phish/Widespread jam headliner spot. Their popularity has gone up quite a bit in the past couple years. They are still playing theaters around the country (although increasing in size), so they have a ways to go before they are doing ampitheaters and headlining festivals. But of all the younger jam bands, I think they have the most potential.
I thin Cut Copy has a really good shot at headlining fests if we are talking 5 years from now. Florence i think will headline sooner than that. And same with Mumford and sons. I'm thinking like three years or something. I mena that mumford crowd last year was ridiculous.
I'm leaving out MMJ and Jack White as well for the same reasons as many of you
as for other possibilities: Miike Snow Gary Clark Jr. (i can see him blowing up like The Black Keys and we will soon be hearing him on every single commercial) Vampire Weekend Kendrick Lamar (i'm picking him over Drake, because i like his poop more) M83
Also i think Phantogram is a good album away from being really big. And since LCD Soundsystem is no longer around (sadly) i am interested to see what happens with Art vs. Science, because i think they share a similar style and could get a pretty big following. Maybe not headline but really blow up within 5 years
I was going to say Gambino as well actually, but i'm not what could happen with his acting/comedy career. I feel like if he were to dedicate to Rapping then definitely but i could see his acting career take off as well in which case we could start seeing him in a lot more movies.... Maybe headline the movie tent (i kid, i kid)
I'm seeing hip-hop names come up, and it got me thinking. To headline a major festival as a hip-hop artist, the artist in question needs to be a HUGE act for the time and a crossover artist. People need to listen to them that aren't big on hip-hop in general. This lead me to tangent my own thought process (which happens constantly) and think "...who will be the star hip-hop acts in 5 years). You obviously have those steady old-school emcees, but....who out of the new generation? This led me to run through who the top "rappers" are of this generation, which led me to curl up in a ball in my shower and run freezing cold water over myself for an hour.
Acts like Lamar and Gambino, two acts I really enjoy, won't be headliners, at least I don't think so. I think they're destined to be second-tier acts who fans appreciate and enjoy, but the general public will never latch on to. Unless they sell out and go super-poppy on a hit single to get that crossoverability.
lots of people mentioning mmj in this thread, is last year's set considered a co-headliner and thus doesn't count? either way, they will be back to close down the main stage within less than 3 years.
the only current bands on the fringe of mainstream success that i can see moving up soon are, in order of likelihood: florence and the machine mumford and son vampire weekend
and further behind: portugal. the man grace potter and the nocturnals

I wouldn't be too sure about PTM. I love the band, one of my current favorites, but they just went through some major lineup changes and the band isn't the same group as they were in the past few years. Sometimes these things have a lasting effect and can be great or damaging. Hopefully they keep rising in popularity/fame though.
I also feel like there has to be a hip hop name in there, but I don't know who that would be.

You really think so? I can't see any chain of events that leads to Kendrick Lamar being on the same level in five years that Jay-Z or Eminem are on right now.
The reasons I am going along with 'Moon Taxi' are because 1) how much they changed their sound between albums to be more radio-pop/stadium rock and 2) they put on great live shows.
They're playing Bonnaroo, Firefly, Lolla, and 2 shows at Bear Creek which will gain them a lot of exposure. And if they keep tweaking their sound to be more Kings of Leon and less Tea Leaf Green, I'd say 5 years, 2 albums, and one overplayed 'Pumped Up Kicks'-esque single is enough to get them in the top 10 of a fest lineup.
However, the fact that their band name is 'Moon Taxi' will hurt their chances.

He has the skill and swagger to make it big and with Dr. Dre backing him I could see him getting pretty big. Look at how big Drake got seemingly overnight with Young Money backing him. Might not happen within the next 5 years but a lot of people (Dre included) really seem to view him as the next big star in hip-hop

I remember when The Game/Game was looking like he was the next big thing. He got love from G-Unit before their stuff went sour and Snoop, Dre, and other big names gave their endorsement. Now he's barely ever mentioned.
