My Morning Jacket Zac Brown Band Mumford And Sons Avett Brothers
---Maybe--- Bon Iver - Depends on if the next album is widely recieved and how different it is than self titled.
Florence + the Machine - They just need one more good album to secure their place on the list
The Civil Wars - I have a feeling they will expand their sound much like Iron & Wine (Sam Beam) did. If they did, and had a big album in a few years, I could see them as a headliner in 5 or 6 years.
Jack White - this is a BIG maybe. I think a lot of people on here are too big of fans to respond rationally about this. Jack White's peak in his music career (so far, and according to popular opinion, not my own) was the white stripes. The White Stripes had a farily long run of being commerically successful and crittically aclaimed at the same time, and had a very large following too. The real question is, will Jack White find that level of success again? Maybe, but maybe not.
The Shins - I love this band, but I just don't see them ever being popular enough to headline.
Foster the People - this music fails to entertain me as much as it seems to entertain everyone else, but I should list them given how everybody and their f'n mother seems to love them.
The National - Again, really like this band, but really can't see tens of thousands of people lining up to see them.
---My Longshot--- Gaslight Anthem - Because Brian Fallon is the man.

Jack is headlining Hangout, Sasquatch, and Lolla THIS YEAR. He doesn't qualify.
My picks would be Phoenix, Mumford, and VW, but in all honesty the landscape for Roo headliners won't be that much different than it is today. We still haven't done Jack, The Killers, Muse, Black Keys, MMJ or returns from Pearl Jam, Crazy Horse, and Arcade Fire.
-When I Hear My Name -Dead Leaves and the Dirty Ground -Blue Orchid -Passive Manipulation -Red Rain -Death Letter -My Doorbell -Hotel Yorba -Same Boy You've Always Known -Lovesick -Little Ghost -We're Going to Be Friends -The Hardest Button to Button -Black Math -The Nurse -I Just Don't Know What to Do With Myself
Encore: -Ball and Biscuit -Seven Nation Army -Screwdriver
Cool idea. I don't have time to read through it all now, but I'll throw some out there.
The more obvious choices: Black Keys MMJ Kanye (if he played again) Jack White
A little further down the road, maybe one more big album: Phoenix Bon Iver Avetts Flaming Lips? Fleet Foxes Bloc Party
Even further still: Florence + The Machine TV on the Radio Deadmau5? Santogold Justice (I'm not sold though)
Wild Cards: Portugal. the Man Gary Clark Jr. The XX Beirut
Bands that could have, but plateau'd. Maybe could with a great return album: Death Cab for Cutie Incubus MGMT Snoop Dogg (solo)
This summarizes my feelings exactly. I was reading this and was thinking the same about MGMT too with a great return album I could see this a plausible. I kinda feel that Death Cab, Incubus, and Snoop have peaked in popularity. IMO MGMT would have to come back with an album that is less Congratulations more and more OS. I am actually surprised nobody even remotely thought of MGMT.
Totally forgot about her/them. I'll add her to my original call to make it a trio.
Yep, forgot about Florence. I didn't even realize she was playing major amphitheaters already. She's either one album away, or a year of just gaining popularity to do it.
My longshot is Gary Clark Jr. Saw him on a magazine cover the other day, and he just had that born to be a star look. He has still yet to produce a great album, so there's alot of work to be done. But as far as talent goes, along with a marketable sound and look, he could rise pretty high. Maybe along the lines of Ben Harper's career, who always seemed as if he was on the cusp of headlining but never got there.
I also almost mentioned him. He's pretty obscure right now, but I think he has the talent and sound to really appeal to a wide audience (rock/blues but a little jam influence as well).
I also feel like there has to be a hip hop name in there, but I don't know who that would be.
Lupe Fiasco is the only current one that I think, if done right, has the potential to be a Jay-Z/Kanye size act. A new rapper would emerge though after a major hit / guest appearance I feel like, ala how Drake and Nicki Minaj blew up in no time.

You're absolutely insane. Just flat out crazy. Lupe hasn't gotten any bigger or better than he was 6 years ago. If anything, he's worse.
Seriously - all the headliners, no matter what genre they come from, tend to appeal to a wide range of people. They're popular beyond popular; people who don't like jambands like Phish; people who don't listen to metal still know Metallica; people who aren't big into hip-hop are aware of Jay-Z and can probably hum some of his songs.
A lot of these bands, no matter how awesome they are, won't ever reach that level of popular awareness. It's not for lack of talent or craft, it's just the way things work.
I don't tend to pay attention to hip hop all that much, so maybe you're right. I was more referencing Lupe for the sound he took on 'The Show Goes On.' I honestly don't know or care much about him, just was throwing it out there as I know it was a big single.
And, yes, a lot of the bands mentioned here won't ever become headliners. Their next album will flop, they won't develop their sound, they'll break up. But some of the bands listed in this thread will expand their sound/audience, release a blockbuster album and headline a major festival. Kings of Leon, Arcade Fire, the Black Keys, the Killers have all accomplished this over the last several years (going from playing a side stage at a festival to headlining). Florence is almost there - she's exploded over the last year and is playing the 20k amphitheaters. It does happen, obviously, so it's mere fun to speculate.
Obviously people are going to take a different approach to how they view things, but it's still a fun topic. It's fun and meaningless speculation of where we think some of these bands will go.

Widespread Panic means absolutely nothing to a wide range of people. Mainstream music fans quite likely havent even heard of them and theyve headlined numerous times.

From most to least likely, and by no means including all the possibilities: My Morning Jacket Black Keys The Strokes Jack White Sigur Ros Mumford (absolutely no doubt about it at all, and in probably 2-3 years rather than 5) Florence Phoenix Modest Mouse Bjork The National Bon Iver M83 Dawes Foster the People Vampire Weekend St. Vincent (especially after the David Byrne colab) Gotye (2 more albums?) Spoon Edward Sharpe + Beirut Metric.
For the record, I was hoping the discussion would tilt more toward up & coming bands (Phoenix, Florence) than bands that simply haven't headlined Bonnaroo but definitely are already big enough to (Black Keys, Muse, Jack White that have already headlined other similar festivals).

They were billed #6, so I'd argue no but some would say yes. Lolla gets 6 headliners that play opposite of each other. They closed Which the same year.
As far as hip hop goes, the current artist most likely to be a headliner in 5 years is Wiz Khalifa. That's not necessarily a good thing, but he would be who I would put my money on in the hip hop genre.

On a serious note. Not to say I want all of these just what I could see happening.
Kol Reunion (gross) Cage the elephant MMJ Deadmau5 ac/dc on a hip hop note hopefully a throwback I don't listen to anything new mainly because it sucks.
oh lord I would give anything to see Animal Collective headline
I think that Centipede Hz is going to do it for them. The only reason I can't dont see them headlining is because they when they tour 60/70% of there show is new songs. It happened right after feels and strawberry jam the only time it didnt was for MPP and that because Josh wasn't around.

My thoughts after putting everyone elses thoughts into consideration and ruling out MMJ, deadmau5, jack white, the black keys and a few other obvious ones that I think have already gotten to headliner status ARE...
-sigur ros -MGMT -pretty lights -mumford and sons -the avett brothers -justice -foster the people -bon iver
my wildcards but definite possiblities: -sufijan stevens -big gigantic

We're wagering here on albums not yet written and songs that haven't yet gotten radio play. There were bands on the What stage in 2005 that probably would close a tent now. The Black Keys played a tent in 2007, and they're probably almost there with their newest album. Fanbases come and go. Limp Bizkit would have gotten a prime stage spot in 2000. The Internet and festivals fractionalized music tastes, and it's a lot tougher to be an arena act. It could be a headliner-by-committee/ split main-bill deal within a few years. Modest Mouse could with another breakthrough. Flo+M is probably almost there + an album. Shocked that I don't recall seeing Bassnectar's nor Skrillex's name on here. Skrillex crossed over with Korn and won Grammys within a year. Could BN be doing the same now with Lupe? Not what I'm pushing for but it's in the realm. I expect Jack White to headline next year -- not 5 years. We could see an Australian wave with Gotye, Art Vs Science and Tame Impalla -- any/all. Five years is 2 albums + maybe an EP. Vampire Weekend and MGMT are within striking distance, as are Drake and Lupe. Mumford, Alabama Shakes, Civil Wars? Probably two of three by 2017. Would Beyonce headline? Look for more repeats. Sans Macca, Prince and David Bowie, your 70s and 90s superstars yet to headline are almost dried up. Of the past 12 years, Jack White is one of a few that could do an arena tour -- and that's with material from several different bands. Always fun to speculate, though.
MGMT - their second album was a step backwards for them headlining Bonnaroo or Coachella IMO Sigur Ros - I love them, but couldn't see them as a headliner, maybe the 6th or 7th name on the bill. Their music just doesn't appeal to enough americans. Modest Mouse - I just can't see it, even with a spectacular album and unexpected commerical success, it's a shame, but I see them as being one of those bands that is always out of the spotlight. Skrillex / Bassnectar / Pretty Lights / Deadmau5 / etc - I think EDM has it's place at bonnaroo, but I can't see an unopposed slot going to EDM any time soon.
To Airline: When I said that I had doubts about Jack White, I was refering to him headlining Bonnaroo. I think if he was playing Bonnaroo this year, he would be between the Beach Boys and Bon Iver on the lineup I do think that he could headline bonnaroo in the next 5 years, but I'm just not as certain as everyone else. Also, I think that his (any eveyone else's) chances of headlining Bonnaroo are diminished by the whole "We HAVE to have a jamband headliner or the world will surely fall off its axis!!" mentality. Realistically, the White Stripes should have headlined in 2007, Kanye (or Jack Johnson) in 2008, and Buffalo Springfield last year (IMO), but instead, Panic, Phish, and Dave get to take turns closing sunday.
Not trying to start an arguement, just trying to clarify what I meant.
As much as I love Modest Mouse, I cannot ever see them headlining.
I fucking love Modest Mouse, but yeah. They've plateau'd in their popularity, bar some radical transformation. I think their in the same category as Wilco - if they were ever going to be headliner status, they would have hit it by now.
