Mumford is fine at 2nd tier status but it is BS for them to be headlining major festivals so early in their career. Headliners should have been doing arenas for 10 years.
I agree that this is how it SHOULD work, but that's not the reality. Mumford sold 2.5 million copies of their first album, and the new one is currently the US highest debut of 2012. It sold more in its first week than Madonna, Green Day, and Bieber could move in their respective first weeks. Mumford is a top 3 headliner wherever they play next year. There isn't a single US festival that will book them and then put them in the 2nd tier just because they haven't paid enough dues.

Don't forget the fact that they put more songs in billboards hot 100 than any other band in over 4 decades. I don't think Arcade Fire did that. Just sayin.
Compare M&S to Jack White as headliner status. Not who you'd rather see, but who would sell better right now. That's easy. Mumford would blow Jack White away with ticket sales. Like it or not, hangout is trying to earn money by sellin tickets.
They have no problem selling tickets though. I think the shit is going to sellout out no matter who they get now. It's now just a matter of what type of crowd they want to cater to. Will they continue to piss off more heads and invite more douchebags in? Here's the formula for that: Mumford | Muse | No Doubt Avett Brothers | Cake | The Hives ^I'm not going to that shit
Or do they want to continue to bring balance to the force? Here's one of many formulas for that: Phish | Mumford | Paul McCartney Primus | Refused | A Perfect Circle

It's not a matter of which band has the most annoying fans. It's a matter of having multiple genres of music rather than just having predominantly lite rock/pop.

You are right as far as selling out (assuming they keep it at roughly 35000...). I agree.
I learned earlier on in this thread that the promoters want to be considered one of the key festivals - so maintaining peace with the festi heads is probably important to them. So I agree with that too.
I just don't see how Bruce/Mumford/ANY headliner as a top 3 would alienate the avid festival goers. It is fairly common that at least 1 headliner to most festivals isn't something that one would have picked. So throw out Muse. Bruce/Mumford for me is worth it. Maybe the (as you so eloquently described) "douchebags" wouldn't care for Bruce, but the other 2 are right up their alley.
And, honestly - let's face it - This is a beach party with music. How many wooks do you see excited about drinking 7$ beer while shirtless on the beach? Probably a lower percentage than the college brahs.
Last year was as close to a brahfest as I can imagine (lineup wise..DMB, RHCP, Skrillex, Mac Miller...) and the vibe there was awesome. No fratboy issues, no jackass pecker heads trying to start fights, generally people gave everyone around them room and respect, and was friendly.
Its not, and never will be, anything like Bonnaroo, Wanee, Coachella, OSL, Sasquatch, or any other festival. It is its own thing.
Now, as far as McCartney - he hasn't even played Bonnaroo yet. If I was forced to make a bet, I would put my money on him showing up at Roo and never showing up on the beach. He fills 10,000 seats at over 150$ a seat average without even trying. Unless Hangout gets bigger (like say, 50,000 people) I just don't see them having the budget to book him and have any money left for any kind of an undercard worth going to a lot of people. Even though I would LOVE to see him there, I just can't see it happening. And I don't know if I want to be proven wrong, because I wouldn't want a whole weekend pretty much focused on him - the rest of the music would suffer for just ONE show.
Mumford - Bruce - Phish Beck - Foster the People - Primus

Hangout has the potential and desire to be a top 5 fest, and I agree that in order to do so the key is diversity. Having multiple dope acts across a variety of genres is what gets Internet buzz amongst fest geeks like us going, and we tell all our low information music friends how awesome the lineup is, and they believe us because we know our shit.
For the record I thought the vibe in 2012 wasn't as good as 2011.

All good points, and I wasn't there in 11, so I can't compare. I know I had an awesome time in '12
PLENTY of shirtless wooks at first Hangout raging the beach.
sweet! wouldn't have thunk it.
So what do you all think about the festival getting bigger? Like say, 50,000 people? or maybe raising ticket prices to 400$ for GA?
I would prefer the latter. Keep the festival intimate, and afford mega talent on the beach. Id pay it. Probably more if McCartney was there and the lineup was still stacked with tons of good stuff.
Paul McCartney - Prince - Phish Dr Dre - Mumford & Sons - Stevie Wonder - Beck - Zac Brown - The Black Keys - Foster the People
I had an good time at Hangout 2012 (my first year going), but I don't know if I'd do it again. They need to find ways to put more shade in GA. Friday was awesome, Saturday was okay, Sunday was awful because the heat finally got to me. If they could bring in more shade for people who don't spend the majority of the time under the Xbox Tent while the sun is out, that would be awesome.
As far as the lineup goes, it's probably gonna be the same formula year in and year out until something goes wrong. As in:
Major Legend Performer (& His/Her Band) - Hottest Rock Act Out There Today That's Going To Headline Every Other Festival This Year But You Can Come See Them Here First Unless Coachella Beat Us To Them or DeLuna/Voodoo Booked Them Last Year - Massively Popular Jam Band
There's no way they should make the festival bigger. 35K is packed the quack out as it is. And they definitely need to have more spots for shade. If I didn't get lucky scoring a cheap VIP pass, I would have been miserable. They should also allow water access like DeLuna does. They could rope it off 20-30 ft out before it gets over knee deep....just let us cool the quack off occasionally in the gulf.
The diversity (and quality, but that's an opinion of course) of the 2011 lineup was way better than 2012's. But I had more fun in 2012 though because I got to experience the VIP version of the festival with unlimited free alcohol, front main stage access, clean bathrooms & sinks, and many places to cool off. I think everyone is willing to shell out a little more money for a better lineup, but for $400 they would definitely have to make this a 4 day fest, let the festival run past the normal curfew time each of those days, improve some of the existing problems (crowd flow, location of rides, lack of shade, misting areas, shallow water beach access, etc.), and have 6 headliners instead of 3.

Sometimes you just get unlucky with the headliner pool. It's looking like next year will have a bunch of touring BNAs I just don't give a shiz about. I can't really blame Hangout if they end up with Mumford/No Doubt/Muse, because I could plausibly see that being the top 3 at any of the big 4 next year (maybe not roo). I don't think that lineup would draw a substantially different crowd from last year, by the way.
Giving Cornell's acoustic set that prime slot on the friggin main stage has to mean they were wooing him to get Soundgarden to headline 2013. I like Cornell/Soundgarden/Audioslave, but his acoustic set on the main stage was a head scratcher from an energy/audience participation point of view.
Soundgarden seems like a good fit for Hangout, and a better festival fit for Cornell & Co than Roo. JMHO.
This year, I think Hangout needs to make a big EDM splash (big name, larger set up) and incorporate some more mainstream hip-hop. Yellawolf and Mac Miller got great responses from what I saw. Roo is really kicking Hangout's ass as far as hip hop goes the last couple years.
Makes total sense about Will.i.am. I guess replace him with something less polarizing like Lil Wayne, Big Boi, Ludacris, etc. FWIW I never in 1,000,000 years thought Mac Miller would be at Roo. And FTR I saw his whole show at Hangout this year and had fun. Would I ever see him again? no. Would I ever buy a CD of his? not a chance - but I did have fun at the show.
As far as Gilmour/Floyd at the fest - I have a question. When was the last time Waters or Gilmour did anything at a US festival? I think it will happen sometime soon (2013 hopefully) and if Hangout really wants to be considered as a peer of the big boys that would be a great way to do it. That would be an amazing get for them. Can you imagine the lasers and show at the beach? DSOTM went over pretty well...just sayin'
I'm just guessing the last Floyd at a festival was Waters "Dark Side of the Moon" Coachella 2008.
It would be a major coup if Hangout could get Gilmour over Roo/Coachella. Maybe he wants to play On an Island on the beach?
Best guess is Gilmour decides he wants to do the festival circuit, and all the big ones get a night of Gilmour. Still cool if you ask me.
Roger Waters is more likely to happen than David Gilmour. Waters plans to play some shows in 2013, but we haven't heard a peep out of Gilmour concerning any tour plans. Also, to whoever suggested Van Morrison as a headliner earlier, apparently he isn't THAT big. So if he was added, he'd play either second tier chevy stage or maybe even earlier in the afternoon like Steve Winwood did this year. I'd love to have Jeff Beck play one of those slots too.
I think a Soundgarden add would be great, but it all depends on Pearl Jam's plans since the drummer obviously can't be two places at once. PJ are playing Lolla Brasil/Chile in March/April. I'd love for either one to headlining saturday, but I think they might avoid Pearl Jam since DeLuna & Midtown just had them.
It's very likely that we won't get Phish (or Further). I have a feeling we'll get Trey Anastasio Band (or whatever he calls it when they tour for new album), maybe even SCI again, Moe, and Dark Star Orchestra for the hetty ladies. Trey Headlined in 2010, but after the festival selling out two years in a row for 2011/2012 and the likelihood of them increasing ticket prices again...would they put Trey in an SCI/FLips spot on the other beach stage or let him headline?
What we really need is some Tame Impala on one of the beach stages at some point and Animal Collective on any of the other stages at night. Flaming Lips need to get the boot. 3 years in a row? enough already.

The FLips cancelled in 2010, but you're right. I'm hoping they skip Mumford and get Soundgarden. They've already said they won't book Pearl Jam because of DeLuna. When I think of a "rock" headliner, I think Foo Fighters, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, Metallica- not Mumford and Sons.
Matt Cameron is the luckiest guy ever. He gets to be in Pearl Jam and Soundgarden.
At what point did we start to get legit rumors last year? I remember someone saying very early on that DMB would be there. And I think RHCP was assumed. Jack White came out of nowhere if I remember correctly.
The legit rumors happened in early to mid january. Jack White was the first that was officially announced a few days before they announced the whole lineup in early february.

Ok. For some reason I thought someone had come here around early December last year talking about DMB. I guess January isn't too far away.
