So you're in the long-drive club, too, I'd guess. We're breaking it into two days. Doing most of our driving Wednesday, so we can get down there Thursday for the pre-party.
Has anyone gotten their wristband yet from the Black Friday deal?
They haven't been ready yet. They finally got them in this past weekend, but there was an issue with getting them activated. I was told to call back today, but I'm not holding my breathe. I'll either run down there and get them this weekend or just wait and pick them up when I get there next Thursday.
- How thorough is security at gates? Pat downs, searching of bags? - Are there any good tips as far as navigating from stage to stage? - Any tips on what side of the stage to be on to be less crowded? - How bad are the blanket layers? Do alot of people put down blankets and expect people not to trample them when the big bands come on? - Are there water stations for camelbacks? Does the water taste like crap?

Just got off the phone with the Hangout and they're saying the wristbands for Black Friday tickets are ready and can be picked up in the gift shop. If anybody manages to actually get theirs, let me know.

I'm going over there Saturday afternoon to get mine. Will confirm when I have it in hand unless someone else gets theirs sooner.

Security is pretty intrusive IMO. And they had dogs at the entrance each day I went in last year. Others' mileage may vary, but I will not be bringing anything in the gates I don't want taken away.

Hangout's pretty easy to get around any time. If you walk to the far, beachside of the main stages, there's almost always room right up front. I've never had any issues with people being weenies about their blanket forts or anything.

Yes and yes. [/quote]
Yes I agree the water tasted like crap last year. However, according to one HOMF email: CamelBak Hydration Stations Our friends at CamelBak are makings sure you can stay hydrated throughout the festival. Bring a reusable bottle or a hydration pack to the festival and CamelBak will fill it with FREE freshly filtered water. Stop by any of the four CamelBak refill stations around the festival all weekend to fill up and help to eliminate the waste of disposable bottles and cups.
Maybe the filtration will make it better? Anything is better than drinking out of the beach showers circa 2011.

- I'll agree security is "intrusive" but kind of inconsistent. I've gone in with large lines/no lines and had my bag emptied and completely ignored in both situations (hooray for secret pockets) - Navigation is incredibly simple. Nothing is far and routes are open and direct. MY MAIN TIP: if going from beach stage to beach stage, use the street. Unless you are a marathoner. In theory its amazing to cruise down the beach. In practice it is 2x as long as you anticipate (time and distance). That said, you gotta do it at least once though for the comprehensive hangout experience. - Shore side is almost always sparse. Walk around the back of the crowd and enjoy the fruits of your labor. - Blanket buddies are abundant, but nearly never in the way. Those people generally intend to park it and avoid the crazier crowd areas, so it kind of organizes naturally and peacefully. - I've always used the shower heads (I think 3 stations on the boardwalk), but if I recall there are also "water stations." Showers are free, I believe water stations are as well.
Hope this helps, you're in for a treat. Enjoy you're Hangout and may it be the first of many. See y'all on the beach.

My condo was on the east side of the venue last year, so i went in the east side entrance every day, not the main entrance, and i never had a problem with security. Most days i wasn't patted down or anything. My friends all had camel backs and back packs and they simply made them open the main compartments and briefly stuck their hands inside but didnt empty anything out. Never once saw a dog.... So it sounds like its pretty inconsistent if other people experienced problems. I always just waistband or crotch with a swimsuit anything i want to bring in at any festival and never have had a problem.

Good to know. Yeah, we were on that side and used that entrance as well. Our condo was basically right behind the Chevy Stage. We didn't have any problems or anything. Just that we were subjected to a pretty thorough search every time in the gate, once even stopped after passing through for a pat down from one of the policemen (we don't look shady, I swear! ). We were laughing all weekend about the dogs being so over the top.
I felt like last year was pretty heavy on "security" as far as presence compared to '11. Especially the Baldwin County sheriff out in full force at Skrillex (why??), but I think I was searched more prior to entering in '11 than last year. Most times we went in on the East entrance and had a couple kids checking bags and they barely even looked, but in '11 they dumped our bags every time.
If you plan on walking through the sand to get from stage to stage might I suggest calf exercises beginning today.
The only time over the course of the weekend where I encountered hardcore police searches was just before SCI was about to start. They didn't stop me because I look like a clean shaven well respectable gentleman, but they threw themselves at a friend of mine and proceeded to search the hell out of him. So I would expect the same thing to happen on Sunday this year just before TAB. If you enter earlier in the day, it's definitely more relaxed as they will only briefly check bags.

I remember the cops on four wheelers at Skrillex. We were outside the tent dancing and acting crazy, they didn't give us any issues.
Searches are a crapshoot for me. Sometimes I get the angry lady who tears my bag apart, sometimes I get the lady who thinks my snus is corn, sometimes its barely any searching at all.
As has already been said, they have cops at the entrance. If they find your corn, you will go to jail, no doubt. Keep it in the condo would be my suggestion. Baldwin county cops have proven themselves to have zero tolerance for anything, in my experience.

2011, I had my bag dumped and was patted down once. 2012, I never had my bag dumped, but they did have me open it to look in it. (I carry a little Kavu. What could I possibly have in there?)
As for the dogs, I think they were all show. There was one stationed outside the Main Stage VIP entrance for a good chunk of the fest. I wanted to pet the puppy, but I thought twice about it! :-)
