I'd like to relegate the EDM conversations to a single thread, but the popular thread in here is once again exclusionary.
This is the thread for people looking for some fun high energy EDM to dance to, in the vein of veteran such as Pretty Lights, Bassnectar, Deadmau5, and Skrillex. And I guess Girl Talk as well. As well as any other Dubstep, electro, Drum and Bass, house, trance, etc etc (not big on house or trance personally, but let this be a safe haven for those whose opinions may not be welcomed in the other thread)
For people who want to talk about DJ's and producers with fun dirty beats that make you want to dance, without being ridiculed by elitist hipsters who use Pitchfork as a guide of what kind of EDM they're allowed to listen to.
I don't necessarily want any of the aforementioned DJ's, as I'd rather avoid repeats, but I certainly wouldn't mind any of them too bad. Some others I'd love to see: Knife Party! The Glitch Mob Flux Pavillion Nero Justice Paper Diamond The Bloody Beetroots Pendulum Datsik Kill the Noise Feed Me Boys Noize Doctor P Dillon Francis Andy C Mord Fustang Wolfgang Gartner Infected Mushroom Chemical Brothers
Oh yeah, and I guess Swedish House Mafia. Was never a HUGE fan but I caught a secret WMC pre-party and it was ALOT of fun
But for real, and I know I might get flamed for this, but Paul van Dyk would be pretty cool to see on the farm, though I don't know how his live show is now.

Not that Knife Party aren't already huge, but I honestly think these dudes will be taking it all the way up. It wouldn't surprise me if by next year these guys are headlining the big EDM fests like Ultra and EDC, and getting spots like closing out Lollapalooza and Bonnaroo Which stage LN.

I just want to be clear. I really like an overwhelming majority of the music being discussed in the other thread.
And I understand that a vocal minority (or very possibly a majority) of people here do not want to see stuff like Pretty Lights, Bassnectar, etc at Bonnaroo. Well I do, and I'm pretty sure I'm not the only one.
I haven't followed the 2013 thread closely, but in last years thread it felt like if anyone tried to discuss music that this vocal faction of the board did not like, they were largely ridiculed and shut out. And a culture on here developed around that. I think there are probably some people on here that like this stuff, but since it's become "uncool" on here to like this sort of music, they're afraid to admit it. Look at the Skrillex convertee thread. I read a few people who basically said "I don't like him but the set was fun" You liked it! F*cking admit it! It's ok to like Skrillex.
In the 2012 thread when this type of music was discussed, NoD often complained since he clearly stated in the title that wasn't what his thread was for, and pleaded for people to take the discussion elsewhere. Well this will be where they can freely discuss it.
I really like Skrillex, and I'm not afraid to admit it. He has a cheesy haircut and personality, and his music is shallow, but it's fun.
Bassnectar and Pretty Lights are some of my favorite producers out there right now. You can call it a mess but I think their music is beautiful. It's richly layered and tickles my brains in all kinds of ways.
And yes, mock me if you will, but I quacking love bass drops, and they are sick.
I have no ill will toward the other thread's existence. But if we can't discuss that type of stuff over there, we should have somewhere that we can discuss it

How about go f*ck yourself, how about that?
No problem with "fun" EDM in the other thread. Just a general statement that many, many people would like to see Bonnaroo avoid the same washed out, boring, overplayed, overexposed, playing at-every-single-festival, fist-pump, hair-gel, Jersey-shore, kandi-PLUR-culture bullsh*t bands that are infesting America.
The point has been made repeatedly - fun does not equal dumb, nor does it need to. You can have big beats, hooks, peaks, and energy without it being a pandering, slobbering mass of nonsense packed with plenty of SICK DROPS.
And for the record, there really isn't much hipster elitist nonsense in the other thread. Everyone's just talking about music, brah.
wow you missed the point brah.
this thread was created because certain members (NoD, MC, ALberto) will actually get upset if you even DISCUSS artists in their thread that they dont deem to be "worthy" of their approval.
thats why this thread was created. so we can actually discuss these acts.
God if Knife Party can put together a decent stage setup by next year that would rape the Which STage.
Didn't that show you and Abra went to only have like 200 people? Not talking crap. Just thinking the Which might be a stretch unless they blow up huge soon.

They are blowing up huge. Give it another year to get their name out there and put out a proper LP. Alot of people love them without even realizing it. I swear I'm hardly exaggerating when I say that at Ultra this year just about EVERY DJ (besides the producers) dropped a knife party track or knife party remix, and each time that happened the crowd went bannanas.
If they market themselves right over the next year I could see them having a quick steep rise similar to how Deadmau5 and Skrillex did I saw Skrillex play a club in 2010 to about 300-400 people. Now he's selling out theatres in the same city of 2,000-3,000
i like going to big productions shows like the rolling stones and shit for the spectacle of it all (and because the music is fun). same reason i go to the big edm shows. pretentious hipster haters gon' hate.

Yes and then 2 days later they played to 30,000 people. Thats just Nashville, they dont know good EDM until it goes mainstream.

i think its fine to have two threads.
the reason for the creation of the other thread is perfectly reasonable, to avoid conversation of less popular EDM acts being drowned out by discussion of more popular EDM acts. nothing wrong with that.
I like the music discussed in both threads. I think the dual thread system can work.
Back on topic, I just started listening to Flux Pavilion, I would be interested in hearing how the live show is. And I'd love to get a big superstar house/trance DJ like PvD or Tiesto, I've never seen either live.
i propose we rename this thread MAKE MAKE MAKE THAT BOOTY CLAP: Big Name EDM 2013.
EDIT: also I will say that I think I've received more hatred for my love of Skrillex then any other artist I've enjoyed. And this is coming from a guy who owns multiple copies of every Phil Collins album.
Above all I'd like to see these peoples on the farm next year: Daft Punk (an impossibly long shot I know) Justice Bloody Beet Roots Steve Aoki Ghostland Observatory Some form of New Orleans bounce music! Big Freedia was one of the best dance parties and I hope they have more bounce music again
Deadmau5 was cool in '10 and I'd be down to have him back. It'd also be cool if Diplo came back in some form like as a solo set not as Major Lazer.
Also like a few ppl said, I was really pleasantly surprised by Skrillex this year. I never listened to him before, but that was a funass show he put on.
Can this thread mark the return of Skrillex Photo of the Day?
The problem is the people who do that have a inability to take it when it happens to them.......
For the record two threads makes sense, and I will probably post in both. Laggy has a point there is something to be said for mindless fun EDM, that is shallow but without pretension. Sometimes I just want to go out and dance and not just stand there listening to impressive technical abilities and clever hooks. I just want to grind on the girl next to me and go crazy all night. Of course that does not mean that I would skip a Massive Attack, or Underworld show they are just different and I enjoy both.

Wish list
Daft Punk (obviously) Portishead Knife Party &/or Pendulum Ghostland Observatory Arrabmuzik but I would want to be able to see his hands and I doubt they would put him on a stage with screens. Feed Me Nero Zeds Dead Swedish House Mafia

It's always been my understanding that the extent of pretension in any music doesn't go beyond the fact that every single artist operates under the pretense of, "hey, that sounds f*cking cool."

Different words I am afraid Zapp
Pretension 1. the laying of a claim to something. 2. a claim or title to something. 3. Often, pretensions. a claim made, especially indirectly or by implication, to some quality, merit, or the like: They laughed at my pretensions to superior judgment. 4. a claim to dignity, importance, or merit. 5. pretentiousness.
Pretense 1. pretending or feigning; make-believe: My sleepiness was all pretense. 2. a false show of something: a pretense of friendship. 3. a piece of make-believe. 4. the act of pretending or alleging falsely. 5. a false allegation or justification: He excused himself from the lunch on a pretense of urgent business.
I meant pretentious in the sense that Massive Attack claims a sense of dignity and artistic importance in a way that say Skrillex does not. Still I have room in my head to like both Pink Floyd and the Ramones this is just a similar situation to me.

This thread can and should be a place to discuss and defend even the shallow and mindless EDM (Skrillex, deadmau5, bloody beetroots come to mind)
But in my strong opinion, I really don't think either bassnectar or Pretty Lights are mindless or shallow, and it kind of irks me when people suggest they are. Pretty lights especially, I think his music has alot of soul. And I think it's really well produced and cerebral. I don't get the attacks against him.

Those are pretensions you as a fan are placing on the music though. I just meant the artists aren't sitting there thinking how important their next record is going to be in the pantheons of time. Any and all pretension is placed on the music by the listener. Look no further than you saying that these artists are mindless and shallow--you have made the distinction right there between what is considered to have depth or thought behind it. While I am sure Skrillex isn't sitting there making beats thinking "this is going to make me sh*ttons of cash" any more than Flying Lotus thinking "this is just obscure enough for Pitchfork to like but keep me in clubs". They're artists. They just make music they like, is all.
I haven't kept up with PL in a while but I saw this video a few months ago that got me excited about his upcoming tunes again. To me it seems like he might be going back to the sound of the first two records, which is absolutely okay with me.

I actually disagree here, I think that Skrillex makes music and thinks this will be fun and make people get up and dance their ass off. I think Fly Lo thinks that he is doing something deeper than that, something that will make his listeners think. It is the same analogy as the Floyd/Ramones, Floyd tries to tell deep stories with alternate meanings, and the Ramones did fun bubblegum punk rock. Both are great but artists can certainly have different motivations for making their tunes.

Think it might have to do with his legions of bro fans, and his name, which suggests his music is nothing more than "Pretty Lights."

How did you come up with the name Pretty Lights?
Since the light show and the visual production of the show has expanded so much, people just assume that it's that obvious -- because we have a bunch of crazy lights -- but it came way before that. I wanted to have sort of a visual name, so when you came to the shows there was sort of a motif and it all came together. Pretty Lights is an old Pink Floyd reference, from a 1966 New Years Eve show with Pink Floyd and The Who. On the flier it said, "Come and see the pretty lights," sort of as an advertisement for this show that's going to be really cool. So, that's where I first saw the term, but what it meant to me is, throughout your day or your life there are moments that inspire you as an artist -- and creative people sort of have this eye for the world where they're always looking for things that are beautiful or cool or inspirational. It's the little things throughout your day that can sort of turn into a big inspiration creatively.
The name came from a Pink Floyd reference. Pink Floyd's own marketing has gone to say "Come see the Pretty Lights" but I don't think that's all there is to their music any more than I would say that of Derek's productions. He's a bit of a bro himself, and does indeed have alot of bro followers, but that doesn't mean there's no depth to his music. I generally try not to judge bands too harshly by what their fans are like. Besides, like, you know... ICP.
