I want to see the Steve Reich pieces, so I grabbed a ticket. Now, I need to listen to some of the other groups. Any suggestions where to start?
For Knoxville people, could they not use one of the theaters at Regal Movies downtown? If my memory is good, there is a decent amount of space at the front of the hall.
I am up in Knoxville a few times a year for work, so I have stayed at pretty much every hotel in the area. Considering the location of Bijou and Tenn., I would go with Crown Plaza #1 and Hilton #2. Both of these hotels are within walking/stumbling distance. I've never had good luck at Hampton Inn, nor am I a fan of the Holiday Inn by the World Fair Park. The Five Point by Sheraton is nice but not within walking distance.
If you are looking for a cheaper hotel, there are several decent options off of Exit 108 on I-75N. Its about 4 miles to the downtown area.

Didn't they recently remodel that Holiday Inn or am I remembering something else? Are you talking about the Merchants Dr exit off 75? There are some decent options on that exit, but there are also a few that seem a little sketchy. I have found that, since I live here, I have nice information about the area hotels are in, but I really have no idea how good the actual hotels are.
All I can say for 100% is do NOT stay at the Deluxe Inn on Magnolia or the Magnuson in West Hills.

Its been about 18 months since I stayed in the Holiday Inn. It needed a rehab at that time, but not sure if it has gotten one since I have stayed there. Exit 108 = Merchants, I stayed at the Comfort Suite there, and it is pretty nice. Another option it a new Holiday Inn Express near McKee's Bookstore (I forget the name of the road), I stayed here in August and it was fine.

That's Papermill Dr. The bookstore is McKay's which is actually a really good used book store. That Holiday Inn is really new. Interstate access is pretty easy from there.

McKay's is my favorite place in Knoxville. Incredible used book selection. You can usually find whatever you're looking for, which isn't always the case with used book stores. They also have a surprisingly great used vinyl selection, and a bunch of SNES games. You nerds should definitely go to McKay's.
Via FB: "We’re overwhelmed by the response to our on sale, blowing previous years out of the water! A limited allotment of Weekend Passes still remain at $150. Once this allotment is sold out, Weekend Passes will be $175. A limited number of Single Day Passes will be made available sometime in early 2014 after the full details of the Big Ears lineup and schedule have been announced."
This little tidbit from the Dean & Britta bio got me excited today.
"13 Most Beautiful…Songs for Andy Warhol's Screen Tests features a selection of Warhol's four-minute silent film portraits with newly commissioned soundtracks by Dean & Britta... The live show is a multi-media presentation, where Dean and Britta perform onstage with their band ( Anthony Lamarca and Matt Sumrow), while the Warhol films are projected overhead."

I've never stayed in a hotel in Knoxville, so I don't know prices or quality, but I do know locations. They recently turned an old apartment building into a brand new, very nice looking hotel on The Strip (Cumberland Ave near UT campus). I can't remember what company, though. It's about a mile and a half, at most, to the downtown venues. I live a few blocks closer and walk a mile to downtown every time I go there, which is a few times a week. There's also a free trolley that picks up about 2 blocks from the hotel and goes downtown. It runs late into the evenings on Fri/Sat, but it doesn't run at all on Sundays.
There's also the Four Seasons hotel on Clinch Ave. It's about a half mile from the downtown venues. I think there's another a block closer also on Clinch, too, but unlike the Four Seasons, I can't currently see the name on the building from my office window. I think it's a Holiday Inn or something. There's also the Oliver Hotel on Market Square. It strikes me as fancier (there's a speakeasy hidden in the lobby!), but the location is unbeatable.

I have never stayed there, but yes, the Oliver Hotel is fancier than your standard Holiday Inn. I had some friends stay there for a night in a fancy hotel getaway because he was on call at the time, so they couldn't leave town.
One of them is nice. The other isn't. Unfortunately, though, they're both already full for Big Ears. There's not a ton of floor space, but anyone is welcome to sleep under the table or in the hallway!
Looks more likely that a couple of friends and I may make it up for this. I was actually planning on getting a pass today, now that my deposit has gone through, but last minute car repairs put a halt to those plans. Soon, though.

I changed it to the "Santa hat" version, and now it looks like it's been deleted. Actually, it looks like a bunch of SFA's early masterpieces are now gone. Bah, humbug!

^^^Yes indeed.
I was just listening to the live touring show of RadioLab, with a performance by Reggie Watts, and thought... well, the obvious. He'd fit in very well, and he's obviously a favorite of Capps since he's played the 'roo Comedy Tent multiple years.

It hasn't been two weeks yet and I'm salivating for additions. It's looking like the last edition was in early February, so who knows. They pulled out some big guns though. Additions from 2010: "The Big Ears Festival continues to expand with Sufjan Stevens, Adrian Belew, William Basinski, Liturgy, Konk Pack, Abe Vigoda, and Ches Smith joining the lineup."
I'm guessing you're right about Buke & Gase as an addition. I'd like to see some brass added. And John Zorn. Mostly just Zorn.
Post by steveternal on Dec 16, 2013 8:22:35 GMT -5
Hot damn, how had Zorn not occurred to me before? Although, I don't think Zorn could be enjoyed as a one-off. Really, he should be given the Reich treatment: the pivotal artist for a given year, incorporated into several performances. Throw in regular collaborators like Mike Patton, Bill Frisell and Yamantaka Eye/Boredoms, and the whole thing writes itself.
Total agreement. The collaborations that could revolve around him would be mind blowing. Figures this is the year he and Moore are working together and I can't go.
While not brass (or Zorn), I'm pulling for Jenny Hval.
While probably not necessary, I'll try and keep a running list of dates. As usual, I won't list anything that has all three days listed on Pollstar or Jambase. If you come across anything, lemme know. Given the fact there is going to be a lot of collaboration, we may never know till the schedule is dropped. That said, this is loose and obviously subject to change:
