I've got my badge and have RSVP'd for that one, but you're right there is no guarantee that you will get into a show. I'm taking it that it's a first come basis and that may be a difficult show to get into without arriving at noon. There is always something good for free at Auditorium Shores and on the stage at Sixth Street. Waterloo Records has excellent free show. Last year on Friday alone they had Talib Kweli, Jimmy Cliff, Of Montreal, Howlin Rain, Gary Clark Jr, and The Cult. The best bet, I'm guessing, would be to get a wristband for the day you plan on being there and maybe picking one of the showcases at one spot instead of trying to hop from show to show.
I went to the Saturday of this last year and saw Gary Clark and Father John. Free and no use for RSVP. I'll probably check it out again this year. What are your plans Fuzzy?
Anyone heard if they are doing a Mess with Texas party this year?
Everyone follow do512 on twitter for RSVP's and such.

I'm going all week. My plan is to see shows all day everyday and have a great time. do512 announced a showcase at Cedar Street today with Local Natives on Friday of the fest. I have to wait to see some more announcements before I'll have a clue of who I'll get to see between conflicts and distance of venues.
edit: I was going through the names on the app today and saw Captain Murphy listed. Definitely going to try and catch that.
Rule of thumb is that it's not impossible to see the day shows, but night shows require a wristband and badge. No chance of getting in for me at Miike Snow last year.
Here is the Cedar Street party with Local Natives. Daytime shows so get there early if interested.
I usually and always have gone wristbandless, but may consider if I can find one this year.
It is a guarantee I make it to Fader Fort at least one day of sxsw. Last year I caught Gary Clark Jr, Santigold and SBTRKT there. Fader Fort released there RSVP on MArch 7th last year and it filled up within an hour or 2. Completely free with free budweiser, sweet tea with vodka and whiskey and coke I believe.
Still no clue on Mess With Texas Party, but it's almost a given. I wish they moved it back to the old park though. It was so much bigger.

I just discovered the scene on Rainey Street during ACL this past year. I loved that. A street filled with bungalows that have been turned into clubs. If you were to walk or drive down the street you would think that it was a block party with music coming from each house.
Dap Tone Records is bringing their Soul Revue to Moody Theater on Thursday , March 14.

Ha! That's funny - I was looking for the Jagjaguwar party and saw the Daptones one and was going to send it to you - sounded right up your alley!
So hmmmm. Do I do Thursday and Friday or Friday and Sunday? I get two days for music shenanigans, better make them count. The Sharon Jones and Charles Bradley one is tempting. I registered for the one with alt-J and Toro y Moi on Friday, but I had a feeling it would get shut off by 1 at the latest.

Thanks man. I RSVP'd filter mag. Definitely will catch Local Natives if I'm in town by then otherwise I plan on seeing St. Lucia and Wild Belle in Friday for sure.
I've never tried Fader. Figured I never had a chance honestly.

Where's the alt-j RSVP?
And Fuzzy have you heard anything else about the Captain Murphy set? I'm so down for that. Need details!

Rideincircles linked the RSVP for Alt-J a few posts ago. Captain Murphy isn't showing up on the site under artists, but on the app it's showing a Brainfeeder showcase with his name being the only one listed. Date and time are still tba.

Awesome. I'll definitely keep tabs on it. Getting into that showcase could potentially end up being my primary focus this year. Doubt I'd ever get another chance to catch a Captain Murphy set.
I think I'll end up at the Windish showcase on Friday as well though I'll have already seen both of those bands by then. Guess it all depends on who Waterloo and Mess with Texas end up having. I was wanting try to catch St. Lucia at some point too.
The Red 7 showcase on Wednesday looks awesome with The Thermals and CVRCHES but I won't get down there until Friday.

Can anyone tell me how difficult it might be to get into the NPR shows at Stubb's? Not that it matters if you don't arrive early enough, but I haven't seen anywhere to RSVP for those.

NPR will be either badge and wristband only or have tickets also. Last year with Alabama shakes and Andrew Bird it was $35 I believe after Fiona. It may fill up with badges and wb beforehand though. Andrew Bird was after Fiona, which only option was badge or wristband for that. I caught the end of Ben Harper for free at the NPR showcase before so it's not impossible. Stubb's has insane security for mega shows though.
Yeah Yeah Yeahs will probably be one of the biggest shows. I would pay for that show though. Still cheaper than wristband paying for 4 or 5 shows. I only paid for one last year I think. You can always listen from outside the venue if you really want to hear the band. Can't see it though. I did that for the end of Fiona.
Also, Sunday at sxsw is a write-off. Nothing happens. Everything ends Saturday and sunday is recovery.
Thursday and Friday it is. There's looking to be some good stuff on both days.
Now with registering for stuff, do I have to do myself and the gf - or is just me and dragging her along good enough? Probably a stupid question, but I ought to ask anyway.

Really depends on the event. Some don't even check RSVP's but I still register myself and whomever is with me just in case.
Action Bronson Ben Sollee Black Joe Lewis and the Honeybears Charles Bradley Clutch The Crystal Method Davy Knowles Futurebirds Grupo Fantasma Hanni El Khatib Heartless Bastards James Hunter Jason Isbell Jim James JJ Grey & Mofro John McCauley (of Deer Tick) & Friends Killer Mike Luther Dickinson Menahan Street Band Pujol Ryan Bingham The Sheepdogs Soul Rebels Talib Kweli Toro Y Moi Turbo Fruits
These are the major names I got checked off on my schedule. There's a few not listed that I have vague familiarity with and checked out of curiosity, or because I think it's hilarious to check them out.

I echo Lowerdeck's need for suggestions. We have a lot of overlap on people we want to see, but Alt-J, DIIV, CHVRCHES, and some others are on my list as well.
Any music junkies (garageland, I'm calling you) want to look this schedule over and provide some suggestions?

Also, I just did some RSVP and free shows last year, but this year I bought a Music Festival wristband and have also RSVPed to a shiz ton of shows just in case.
Between the 2, should I be able to get into most stuff if I'm there early?
alt-J was on my list, mainly for vague familiarity and curiosity. I haven't actually listened to them, but heard a lot of hype. That's why I was checking for suggestions, to see if they (or anyone else) fits a mold with a good chunk of the list I put up.
And whats this about music wristbands? Are they like badge light? Can I get one for Thurs and Fri, how much would that run?

They sell a limited number of "Music Festival Wristbands" that are intended to allow locals get the most out of SXSW, but they come with multiple catches. The biggest being that you have to have an Austin-based zip code in order to purchase. And the name and address, DL #, etc. that you provide all have to match up when you arrive to pick up your wristband (which must be done in person Tuesday-Saturday of the fest).
I missed the first on-sale at $159, but got one at the second on-sale for $179. I don't think there are many showcases that require Badge or Wristband, but occasionally they do exist (NPR might be this way, and I think some of the bigger evening showcases at the Belmont might fit this mold), and my understanding is that in the event of limited capacity, Badges get first priority, Wristbands second, and RSVPs/free attendees third.
I wish I knew more to add, but last year Thursday-Sunday was my first South by experience as I'd just moved to Austin a few days prior, and it was complete chaos. I just wandered downtown and did whatever I could get into for free. Still a blast though.

Wednesday looks to have some good free entertainment at The Stages On Sixth. I'm sseing John McCauley and Friends and Heartless Bastards both listed as playing that day.
Thursday has so many good showcases. I'm thinking of catching the one at Red 7. Night Beds - Suuns - Foxygen on the patio - Besnard Lakes/Phosphorescent on the patio - Akron Family/Unknown Mortal Orchestra on the patio. That's also the night of the Daptone Super Soul Revue at ACL Live, some good Indie at The Belmont, and a nice Americana showcase at Antone's. Rainey Street is well suited for my tastes every night of the conference. I'll probably be hanging out there a lot.
