I actually met the internet stranger on Waka's forum looking for a rideshare. My friends backed out, but I loved the lineup! Lesson learned: Go alone! It's much safer! My Wakamate brought a gun (not a bubble gun) and then proceeded to ingest a large amount of a white powdered substance that didn't have a female's name nor invoke feelings of empathy, became irate that his car was muddy, kicked us out of it during a pretty bad storm and demanded we leave on Saturday morning. Buzz Kill McGee was his name

You should definitely out this person so that no one ever has to go through that shit with him again. Put his name on a "DO NOT RIDESHARE WITH" thread.
He's from Kentucky, but not Louisville. JPD are his initials. I bought his Bonnaroo ticket for another friend, so he won't be there next week. You're welcome He is also selling his EF ticket. I doubt he'll ever go to another festival...he's clearly not festival material! That (shopped) pic of Abra is definitely indicative of the conditions at Waka. How could you possibly expect to keep your car clean?!!?

Agreed, that way you can choose your own friends to make.
or better, hang out at a board like this one where you can at least get to know somebody through their posts, or at least know that other people here know they are legit.
your story sounds like my worst nightmare. You obviously know what you are doing, both in your positive attitude and your festival preparedness, so I'm sorry you got stuck with Ted Nugent. Glad to hear you enjoyed the shows you caught.
I forgot to mention Ozomatli put on their usual feel-good, energetic show. I've been missing them since they last played Roo. "Hoover's" attitude became apparent as soon as it started to rain, so I avoided him mostly. Or he avoided me in his tent with his pile of angry powder. Late Friday/early Saturday is when it got dicey. Other than that, it wasn't all that terrible. There are lots of awesome people at Waka, so it's definitely not hard to make other friends. Our neighbors were super cool. My non-internet stranger friends feel terrible about my situation, so hopefully they won't back out again next year and stick me with "Ted Nugent" (haha! love it!). If I had only looked at his myspace page, I would have known better
How about enough on member's poor taste in jokes and scary movies, lets get this thread back on topic.
I was invited to attend Wakarusa and I wanted to know, besides the wind, rain, and what looks like a small stage collapse, how was it? Any Good performances?
There was no stage collapse, which is why people are mad at Jess.
Thanks Horn, I had thought that picture was from Waka and the article was saying everyone was okay. Also, why do you have a stock picture of Justin wearing lip gloss, Or is that a manikin? Wait, do not answer that, let me just believe what my first thoughts were.
Thanks Dave, would like to any Abra story as well. Waka sounds like a mess.
I actually got home from Waka on Saturday night, but only because one of my Wakamates was a crazy person. It's taken me two days to clean the mud off my gear to see if I need anything new before Bonnaroo. It rained and stormed a lot. The entire venue was a mud pit, a lot like planet earth when it rains a lot. At least as of Saturday morning, lots of sets were canceled and it was continuing to storm. I saw YMSB, Black Crowes (killed it!) and a part of STS9 before they stopped the show. On Friday, I listened to The Whigs, Deep Vally and Of Monsters and Men napping in my hammock. Then Umph, Tipper and the Werks put on one of the best Friday nights of my life. After my Wakamate freaked out, I left on Saturday morning caked in mud and glitter. I wish I could have stayed because I heard that WSMFP put on an epic performance. I did get to see them for two nights in April so don't feel too bad for me While the infrastructure at Waka needs improvement, it really wasn't that bad. Bonnaroo '09 was comparable. Waka is just smaller so it seems like more mud and chaos. I just follow the be-prepared-for-everything creed when I pack for a festival, so my clothes and tent stayed dry, I didn't end up with a pile-o-EZ up and chances are I don't have Hep C. If it rains and the venue becomes a mud swamp, it's going to be hard to get out. Budget for a tow truck! For the most part, everyone was in good spirits and didn't let the storms get in the way of their good time. When they closed the stages, the party moved to the campsites. It did get crazy, but I didn't personally see anything out of line. Kids were spun, but aren't they always? I can't wait to go back next year! However, I will never attend a festival with an internet stranger again.
Man you most def have the right attitude and approach, just next time do a Myspace scan and if they have an account on Myspace, run, run far away. Sounds like some good shows, a great Friday night but the overall picture not so much... It would have been a stretch, so glad I missed it then, because I would not have been all too happy to be covered in mud and glitter riding out the storm in 2T(my truck's name). Which made me think of this:

Didn't go this year obviously, but Waka is on of my favorite fests. Always a good lineup, beautiful location, easy layout. You should definitely try to make it sometime.
^ I know! I was loving the lineup and the ticket was a gifted VIP ticket, but I just had a strange feeling about it and stuck with my gut, which was also good, because I have been sick all weekend, but it is on my list. I have heard so many good things about Waka. oh and a side note, SCI, see you in early July, in Austin!
Mark, I took two Dramamine as soon as we left and slept the whole way home. I didn't say another word to him after he jumped off the deep end. I'll go back next year but with better company, of course! Waka is one of my very favorite festivals. Since last year was my first year, I assume the weather is just part of the fun

FIRST WAKA report:
I've been putting off writing about Waka because... well it's taken some time to process. I'm going to keep this short and probably the best way to do that is lists because I can ramble on forever.
The Bad:
The people working the fest seemed to have NO clue what was going on. 3 hours to get my ticket from will call, it took my friend raging at staff to finally get somewhere and it shouldn't be that way. The staff had no clue where things were, they didn't seem to give two shits about festival goers, and threatened to throw people out for disagreeing. The staff at Waka was poorly run and were probably treated poorly, making the bad attitude trickle down.
Waka made little to no effort to do anything about the mud. It was up to your knees in parts and they only threw hay down next to the vendors.
During a packed set they drove a short forklift through the crowd to get Umphree's equipment from the soundboard out because they "had to leave". Not only was there no warning that this was going on until the person in front of you fell back to avoid it, they almost took out the huge pole holding up the center of the tent.
Medical staff was a joke, they made hateful remarks and were slow to respond.
Even once the rain had stopped or was just sprinkling it took forever to get the music back up again.
Water stations at West Woods were empty a few times.
The mud, but yeah, it got kinda funny at the end of the festival watching people slide here and there. Staff should have been instructed to pick up cans so people didn't slice their feet but yeah... mud.
My phone got stolen. Yes it was my fault for setting it down at the Marlboro tent and turning my back, but 2 seconds later a few wooks grabbed it and that was that.
THE GOOD- The sound at all of the stages was great. I couldn't hear bleed from other sets, even from the tents right next to each other.
The festival goers that had items for sale and came through your campsite had some of the best art/jewelry/other goods. It was really great to hear stories of how they made things, where the materials came from, and they were always down to trade.
Aside from the wooks, a lot of the people there were great. I'll say that the majority of good vibes were from people who were at their first Waka. We were allowed to squeeze into another group's campsite since ours got flooded and our neighbors were wonderful people. There was an party at an RV that put a few of the acts to shame. We drifted over to find 3 easy ups, tarps, a "dj", lights and people dancing their asses off. Great fire spinners and flow artists at Waka, some of the best I've ever seen and waka makes a great space for them.
The shows: Black Crowes- Woah, I didn't expect much but they really put on a show Of Monsters and Men- Great sound, singing alongs Quixotic- sad to only get there at the end, if you get a chance it's worth the hussle Allen Stone- Great sound, crowd involved, funny MUST SEE AT ROO Umphrey's - it's umphreys, no suprises Son Volt- Not my thing, guy's voice sounded like a goat Ozomatli- Happened to see this set after a cancelation and it was probably my favorite show of the entire festival. High energy, great sound, and the lead is HAWT! It's one where EVERYONE was bouncing and dancing. Rebelution- Meh Gogol Bordello- Finally got to see him. High energy, the female singer's mic was messed up but it was a great show. WSP- I wasn't digging the jam bands this fest. Savoy- Woah Lazors! I enjoyed the show and the lazers, that's about all I can remember. Papadosio- My second favorite set, a must see. The floozies- Lots of fun, nothing too unique. Cherub- Low energy, kinda a let down. GriZ- One of the best DJ sets of the weekend. Snoop Lion- Played some of his old stuff and I happen to like his new stuff too. He only stayed in about a 5 foot circle, would have liked to see him move some more. It was fun and the crowd loved it. Amon Tobin- I saw his set at Moog and this time I mostly was in my head listening to the music. Even if you take away the amazing visuals, his music is amazing, complex and can stand alone. Blown away again. EOTO- What a closer. I wish I ended my festival here. Eoto played to the crowd, bringing emotions up and down, beautiful visuals, great vibes. Definitely in my top 3 sets of the weekend. Lance Herbstrong- Ugh, this was horrible. Hated to end my festival with whatever this was.
Also met one of the band members from Rose's Pawn Shop. He was geeking out over getting a photo with Gogol. Seemed really cool and just happy to play there.
I'm really disappointed that so many people's sets got canceled due to rain. Then RJD2 just up and left because I guess he's a bitch like that. You'd think if fans can stick it out to see you, you would do what you could but I guess not.
VIP: I got to try out vip on the last day. Showers were apparently down the first 2 days, they didn't throw much hay down for them either but the walk was nearly NOTHING from the sites to the stages. Free beer, good beer too. VIP would probably be worth it.
In our group of 5 there were 3 people totally new to festivals. They did a great job of keeping spirits up and at least 2 of them have caught the festival bug. For that to be their first festival and come out pumped to go again, you know there was something right. As for me, I don't think I would do Waka again. The 12 hour drive, my phone stolen, the way it was run, and the weather was just a little too much. I'm glad I got free tickets and seeing a festival through noob's eyes was really powerful for me so I'm def glad I went.

OH man how did I forget the portos? THey were almost always clean and usually had TP! BEST PORTOS I've ever seen even including day fests! Whoever did their pots needs to do Bonnaroo. There were plenty, never a line and great upkeep.
The couple of times I've been, the staff was some of the best at getting you through ticketing and into your camp spot. I wonder how much of your experience was because of the rain. I would assume there were volunteers that didn't show, and bad weather just makes people grumpy.

Great review though
There was a storm that rolled in while we were waiting in line. The line didn't move before the storm for an hour and then once it had passed and was just drizzling we asked when they would start checking cars. The security responded "I'm not getting wet so whenever it stops raining completely." Uhhh....

Loved my first Waka. Overall vibe was off the charts. People who can stick it out in those conditions came to get down. Favorite shows had to be Umphreys,Panic, moon taxi, zion i,Amon tobin,Papadosio, eoto and the polish ambassador that guys jumpsuit was hilarious. The Satellite stage is very similar to the Mushroom stage at Wanee; Caught some great Late night sets in those trees. Long!drive but a great time.
