Greg Curry: An honest question, will holders of VIP tickets be able to enter the Mast and Boom stage viewing areas at ALL times and for ALL acts, including the headliner? That wasn't the case in 2012. THE FORECASTLE FESTIVAL: Yes, Greg. VIP Ticket holders will be able to enter the Mast and Boom stage viewing areas for all of the acts, including the headliners, contingent on capacity
We just got our tickets, we're going VIP and as mentioned before, staying at the Galt House. Wooooo!
Buying tickets today, this will be my first Forecastle. Anyone who has been wanna give me some do/donts? best places to stay? cool bars in louisville? Beer prices? Strictness of illegal substances in the fest?
Thanks in advance
Cool bars? Depends on the area of town. Most the bars down town, where the festival is held, suck. Very touristy and full of generally obnoxious people.
However if you venture off into some of the other neighborhoods you can find some seriously cool places. I'm fond of Bardstown Rd myself. Tons of good bars and restaurants. If you have any specific questions feel free to ask.

Regarding bars/restaurants, there are lots of good places within walking distance of the festival. Whiskey Row is about two blocks from the fest between 1st and 2nd streets on West Main and has several options.
Patrick O'Sheas - Traditional Irish pub with the usual grub and lots of beers on tap as well as a full bar. Patrick O'Shea's
Doc Crows Southern Smokehouse and Oyster Bar - Pricey but good. Good selection of bourbons. Doc Crows
Manny and Merle - New place specializing in tacos, tequila, and live music Manny and Merle
Troll Under the Bridge Pub - Just like it sounds. Kinda neat but stay out of the bar area if you are prone to seizures. Troll Pub
Prime Lounge - Bar with untz. At least that's my impression. Not on my regular visit list. Prime
Harleys House of Brews - They were whiskey row when it wasn't cool. Harleys
Joe's Crab Shack - Chain, located directly next to the 2nd stage.
Within a couple more blocks are 3 microbreweries.
BBC Tap Room - Small unassuming location where the beer is brewed and bottled. No food here. Taproom
BBC Yum Center - Across from the basketball arena. Different brewmaster from the tap room location. Restaurant with full menu. BBC Yum
Against the Grain - Located inside the main concourse at Louisville Slugger Field. They brew some interesting stuff here and have a good but pricey food menu. ATG
There's a ton of other restaurants and bars the further you venture down West Main but they get pretty pricey (Jeff Ruby's, Morton's of Chicago, Proof on Main, etc.). If you want to venture further into the city you will probably want to drive but there's some good stuff food and drink wise. NULU on East Market (one block south of Main) is the new hipster district with art galleries, shops, restaurants, and bars. Garage Bar and Louisville Beer store are always hopping.
Bardstown Road has a ton of options too. If you're a beer snob you'll want to check out the Holy Grale. It's an old church that's been converted to a bar and they have really expensive, really hard to find brews.
Frankfort Avenue is another location that's pretty close with lots of options as well.

Hope this helps!
agree with all of the above. some favorite places for a good drink are Meat, a lounge/bar above a resturant in a neighborhood called butchertown, not far from downtown. Also The Silver Dollar on Frankfort Ave - a great drink menu and bourbon selection. Plus there's a ton of bourbon bars located downtown that anyone out of town looking to get a taste of the city would be happy with!
I don't know why they didn't emphasive in the initial announcement that lots more bands will be announced. There was no mention of adds coming, which to me, when 20-25 acts haven't been announced, is marketing dropping the ball. Could've built on the anticipation/excitement.
My personal guess is that a good majority of the adds will be local bands. Last year they had two of the stages entirely dedicated to local music. I'm not sure if that was due to MMJ's curatorial duties but currently there are only 3 locals on the bill currently. The fest was pretty much started with local artists so I would be pretty surprised if there's not several included. If the format is staying the same look for local adds.

Got my weekend pass as well! $125. I'd pay almost that much for separate tickets to a Keys and Avett show. I'm pretty pumped. Can't wait for the schedule breakdown.

There was only one stage for local bands last year. It was right next to the playstation truck and they where only given 30 minute sets. The only local artist to play on the stage next to It was Ben Sollee if i am not mistaken. They did say in a radio interview that the port stage was going away and that they would be basically using the same set up with a few tweaks.

sorry if this has already been covered in this thread somewhere, but does anyone have recommendations about a hotel to stay at that is preferably within walking distance to the festival site and late night cheese set venue that is affordable (i.e. under 100/night)? Thanks guys and gals!

Don't know for under $100 that is walking, but by calling I found out most of the hotels in the area have blocks for Forecastle so there's a discounted rate if you state why you are staying. Galt House is $110 for a double queen room and I think $140 was for a suite with a pull-out couch so you can comfortably sleep 6. If you don't like the online rate (or if they say no rooms available) try calling and it may be better.

Thanks, we booked our room at the Galt house for the $110. Seems like a good location, walking distance to waterfront and the palace for late night cheese!
Anyone know where to take a good whiskey tour saturday or sunday afternoon?
Woodford Distillery is my fave. Are you gonna skip half a day of the fest to go tour?? There's a great bourbon bar in the Galt with everything under the sun. That's where you'll find me.

very valid point, i was thinking if we got to the distillery by 10 or 11 we could be back in louisville by 3 or so. Never been in this area before so really don't have my timing down on how long everything would take. How long would you say a tour would take? And when i glanced at the schedule from last year it looked like the heavy hitters don't start until 4 or 5. Am I in the ballpark with any of this?

Buffalo Trace is my favorite tour, it's about ~30 minutes away. Heaven Hill and Four Roses are both about 20 min away. I haven't gone to either yet, but planned on going to one or the other tomorrow actually.
If you time it right you could definitely make it to one and do a tour and make it back. The tour are all around 1 hour tops.
We just booked an executive suite at the Galt House for $130 a night. What a deal. Looking forward to this. We only live an hour from Louisville so 3 nights of cheese made this a no brainer.

Where does everyone think the Lips fit in? According to their website they're playing Saturday. They'll have to be main stage, right? FLips 8:15-9:45 >> Black Keys 10:30-12?
