Oh I am so freaking psyched. Even more psyched. Can't wait for tickets to go on sale since I didn't get the $100 deal. We accidentally got VIP last year and after experiencing it, I think it's good we didn't get the $150 deal so we can do VIP.

Question on the VIP...were the special viewing areas at the two main stages actually on stage on the risers or rather a smaller section carved out in front of the stage?

Since we got accidental VIP I didn't research it that well and am not completely sure what it entitled. What I experienced was WAY shorter lines to get in to the grounds, and this area to the left of the big stage that had an air conditioned lounge area, separate beer and food stands, air conditioned toilet trailers, and a bunch of furniture to hang out on. The view from there to the stage was pretty meh - I saw Bassnectar there and really couldn't see the stage at all but the sound was good. The best part of that VIP section was the ability to escape and have a place to chill without it being packed. I liked being able to have it so I didn't have to head back to the hotel to rest up. Also having our own beer stand was primo especially after dark. Oh yeah, and clean not too busy air conditioned bathrooms...
So I saw the VIP deals are with the Seelbach Hilton which looks to be further away and more expensive than the Galt House. I just called Galt House (where we stayed last year) and for a "regular deluxe" which is 2 queen beds and no fancy frills, it's $110/night plus tax. I reserved a room for me and my husband. I know they charge additional for parking in their garage.
Just my opinion, but Forecastle is one festival where I really don't see the value in VIP. I didn't find it crowded at all, and could walk right up close to almost every set. Not to mention the need for AC isn't too pressing when you've got that overpass providing plenty of shade, and that stream running through the middle of the park was awesome for cooling down too. Never had to wait more than a minute or two for portos, and the Galt was only a 5-min walk away if you needed to go back for any reason.
In terms of bang for your buck, I think Forecastle is one of the best fests around!

I think the only reason I like VIP so much is because I am a woman and the bathroom situation.

The pit to the left was the VIP section on the main stage, everthing else to the right GA. Like carsoni4 said, you really could for the most part walk up to any stage and get a decent spot.
What happens if my tee shot lands on a bird's back and he carries it out of bounds but then is attacked by a larger bird who grabs the ball and drops it in the hole? Is that still a hole in one? 'Cause that's how I'm gonna play it.

I agree. And you can get liquor anywhere around the grounds as well. Which is sometimes a VIP perk.

Thanks for the pic. I had been to a few Forecastle's in years past but last year was my first at Waterfront Park. Another perk, usually reserved for VIPs, was the Bourbon Lodge. That was a great place to cool off (and have bourbon). I was just debating VIP based on whether you got access to the stage with it, which it appears you don't.
Here's a video I took last year at the second stage of Charles Bradley. I'm guessing the VIP area at this stage must be a small pit in front of the stage?
Here's another of Wilco closing things out. This was the view we had when leaving the Bourbon Lodge about a minute before Wilco went on.
So yeah, I don't really need VIP but at my advanced age I have more money than sense these days. At least that's what the Mrs tells me.

I don't think there was a vip section for that stage. Just the main stage from what I remember.
So I decided to look up tour dates for bands already on the lineup to see if any listed what day they would be playing since they didn't give us the day-by-day breakdown at the lineup drop. This is what I have compiled so far:
Friday: String Cheese Incident (Could either be headliner or The Forecastle Incident as the Avett Brothers could play either Friday or Sunday) Tift Merritt
Saturday: The Black Keys The Flaming Lips Alabama Shakes 23 String Band
Sunday: String Cheese Incident (likely The Forecastle Incident Superjam) The Avett Brothers (would seem likely to play Sunday not Friday) Grace Potter & The Nocturnals Greensky Bluegrass A Lion Named Roar
That is all I have been able to come up with so far but I will try to update this list every so often if people would like.
Also, there are only ~45 bands on the lineup currently and I think we expect somewhere around 70 similar to last year. Anyone have any thoughts on possible additions? Looks like we only have about 2/3 of the final lineup.
Last year there was a pit on the front left of the main stage and that was the only VIP viewing area at any of the stages. The only other perk was what has already been mentioned with the area in between to two larger stages.
It looks like this year the set-up is going to be similar but there is a bump in the price and I think I saw somewhere that VIP gets free entrance to the new/upgrade bourbon lounge. So I guess the price increase is for all the bourbon you can drink during the festival
I don't know why they didn't emphasive in the initial announcement that lots more bands will be announced. There was no mention of adds coming, which to me, when 20-25 acts haven't been announced, is marketing dropping the ball. Could've built on the anticipation/excitement.

For an established promoter, that is a pretty clear oversight.
Abigail Washburn, Adventure Club, Bonobo, Cherub, Cloud Nothings, Everest, Futurebirds, Gramatik, Julia Nunes, Kelly Hogan, Keys N Krates, Lower Dens, Lucero, Minnesota, Moon Taxi, Mux Mool, Rebelution and Trixie Whitley...
I would think we will have a few more bigger names, especially since they are trying to draw 75,000 people over the 3 days compared to 35,000 last year. I love the initial lineup but not quite sure they are to the 25,000 a day draw yet.
Here is a pretty good article discussing the festival and the initial line-up. I think it was originally Holly Weylar, Forecastle PR person, who stated the 75,000 number in an interview.
Buying tickets today, this will be my first Forecastle. Anyone who has been wanna give me some do/donts? best places to stay? cool bars in louisville? Beer prices? Strictness of illegal substances in the fest?
Heard that the Galt House just filled up. Jump on one of the other close spots in this thread. And careful with yr open substances, this is an urban setting.
I'd be very careful about lighting up at the fest. I have heard tons of stories of plain clothes officers busting folks at this fest, although I've never seen it personally.
Much worse in years past, but still, be careful. It's not a hay field. Bars are great in Louisville. They go all night. Prices are fair. It's safe to run around downtown till morn.
Marriot Courtyard. Closer to the festival grounds, 10$ a night cheaper, it was nicer and newer than the Galt, free airport shuttle. Plus it was literally across the street from BBC. I want another Brisket sandwich and Porter please
