Avett Bro's have 500,000+ FB likes, while MMJ has around 350,000. Clearly the winner here is Avett, those stats never lie!
Haha, that settles it then. In all seriousness, with the way they've been hyping the fest this year I think we will see a pretty big headliner. That being said, the undercard is what I am really excited about.

Avetts are playing arenas and civic centers throughout the South now. MMJ tends to get a festival bump, because that's their crowd, but I'd say the Avetts play bigger non-festival shows. I think they're big enough to headline Forecastle.
Can they really do TWO repeat headliners in the Keys and the Lips? I think the Avetts and Alabama Shakes are a lock, and the Keys and the Lips very likely to play, but we're clearly missin' out on a headliner here.
Speculation Alert -- Pearl Jam would put this festival on the map. If they are hoping to get 25K a day at this fest, they could easily surpass that target with one Pearl Jam booking. One might say PJ is too big for this fest, and one would probably be right, considering PJ headlined their OWN fest just a few years ago. But if they are truly trying to grow Forecastle and make it a destination festival, this would be a great way to do it. PJ will be touring this summer and will be on the road right around Forecastle time, with dates in Chicago and Ontario the week after Forecastle weekend. Also, PJ hasn't played Louisville in forever.
Wishful thinking, yes, but it DOES kinda make sense, no? Keys (or other generic big name draw) and PJ headline Friday and Saturday, give the Lips the closing slot on Sunday, throw in some Shakes, Avetts and a big EDM name or two and you've got yourself a fest.
I would love to see Nine Inch Nails be a headliner. I think, since Reznor released that a new tour is forthcoming, they would be a great premier headliner to help launch this fest to a higher level.

Pearl Jam would be so awesome, and yeah they would make sense for a lot of the reasons you mentioned. Also, I don't think they have away all the headliners prior to the lineup dropping last year. I think we're still missing one as well.

This is what I should have said yesterday. Just because MMJ is a bigger festival draw, doesn't mean that Avett's can't HL. They're pretty big in their own right. Released a new album last year that has sold very well, played at the Grammy's two years ago with Mumsons and Dylan, and are selling out large venues everywhere. Plus I think they have a younger fan base that would come out. Oh, and as Phi pointed out, the most important stat, they have more FB likes.
Avetts may be more popular than MMJ, but not in Louisville. Louisville is the only city where MMJ can outsell their own NYC shows. People are ape-shit about the Jacket, here (myself included). Avetts are bigger than Wilco. Last time I saw wilco non-festival was at that ballpark in Chicago last summer and it was their biggest Headlining show ever, and it wasn't THAT big. Not an arena or anything.
I've actually been hearing way too many people say things about PJ headlining. I don't buy it, but JK MkNight is a huge PJ fan. That would be my dream headliner.
Lastly, even if any of these bands are playing, theres no way a festival would pre-hint at their headliners, and theres no way that they would let all their headliners and not much else leak. Also, theres no way a newer festival would book all repeat acts as headliners. I dont know where the Black Keys/Flips thing came from, but I'm doubtful of the validity of that. If it is true, than that gives us one headliner and one second tier act, imo.

Beale Street basically hinted their entire top half of their lineup. So I wouldn't say I there now way a festival would ever do that.
Forecastle is also up against Bunbury the same weekend which has already release their lineup.
I saw Animal Collective in '09 at Bonnaroo and it was horrible. I read an interview where they said that was their worst show ever, so I'll definitely give them another chance at Forecastle.

Haha, well hopefully they're better this time. I was reading some reviews of their shows and they seem like they're a pretty good live band. Cool lights and other trippiness which is always welcomed.

Call me crazy but Forecastle might be accidentally leaking their lineup on Spotify right now. I subscribed to their Spotify account and they have just now recently listened to the following artists:
Edit: I've been continuously updating the list and I'm 99% sure they're leaking the lineup. This list has virtually every artist they had a clue for so far, and the rest make sense
The String Cheese Incident The Black Keys The Avett Brothers The Flaming Lips Alabama Shakes Jim James Old Crow Medicine Show Big Boi / A$AP / Phantogram (Big Boi's track - lines) Dirtyphonics remix by Excision, Datsik (track Deviance) Dawes Griz Freakwater Foxygen Shovels & Rope Ryan Hemsworth Wheeler Brothers Beyonce OMG

It's not a playlist. It just shows up on the sidebar of my spotify because they're currently listening to the artist. my guess is they're putting the playlist together now.
User: Forecastle Captain ... If that doesn't work try going to the forecastle homepage and clicking the spotify icon in the bottom right corner. They haven't posted a song in about 10 minutes so they might be done, but we got a pretty good amount!
If my girlfriend gets wind of this, Roo won't be my only trip south is summer.... She's been obsessed with OCMS since Roo 2011, and the Avetts are close behind.

Same with my wife with String Cheese playing. In '11 she went to that while I went to see Scissor Sisters and get close for GT.
STFU Beyonce?!?!?!?! now I don't know what to think
This is the point they know the jig is up. When a partial list of names from the Bonnaroo lineup was found through Facebook "likes" they realized about halfway through and started adding fake's to throw you off the trail.
