Spiritualized was, hands down, the absolute best set I saw all weekend and one of the best I've seen all year. The hair on the back of my neck stood up more than a few times.
1. Caught On Tape Duo w/ Merzbow 2. Hunters 3. Inter Arma 4. Charlambrides 5. Desert Heat (Three Lobed Day Show) 6. Spiritualized 7. Jenks Miller Band (Three Lobed Day Show) 8. Vattnet Viskar 9. Protomartyr 10. High Wolf
If it seems like these are just Friday/Sat shows, you guessed it. I had an accident on Thursday. No worries though, I made it back with all my body parts.
Did anyone catch Big Daddy Kane on Friday?

Top 10: 1) Hunters 2) Sleep 3) Mikal Cronin (everything people had promised it would be) 4) Vattnet Viskar ( and my pentuple hipster points show) 5) Protomartyr 6) Inter Arma 7) Wolf Eyes/Merzbow (I still kind of have no idea what was going on but it was awesome) 8) Caught On Tape (solo and w/ Merzbow) 9) Expo 70 (would have been higher if he had the drummer and bassist with him) 10) Spiritualized (would have been higher if the sound was better)
Honorable Mentions: Pharamakon (Technically speaking, this probably would be in the top 10 but I refuse to do it for someone who played 20 minutes.)
Disappointments: Marnie Stern (maybe not a disappointment since I only saw her because I got there early for Kurt Vile but it was ungood enough to bear mentioning) Kurt Vile (his vocals were not good at all)
So, Hunters are that good live? I'm looking forward to their new album and now I have to see them.
How was the Paradise of Bachelors day party?
Did you wreck your car, GL?
I really enjoyed their show. It may have more than a little to do with me being a little too into their drummer's drum set. I have a total boner for clear drums for some reason.
I, for one, kind of f*cked up on the PoB day party. I had spent the morning hanging posters for AC, so I had zero motivation to do anything. We ended up sitting in the back row in the shade, so I never got into it as much as I probably would have if I had had the motivation to brave the sun.

Because of clear drums...that's so weird, dude. Haha

I really would have enjoyed the show regardless. The clear drums were just icing on the cake for me. I was kind of nervous going into it because I didn't know if they could bring that intensity that is on the album to a live show. They pulled it off though which I thought was especially impressive since the venue was maybe 1/3 full and not many people seemed super into it.
Did anybody catch Ex-Cult? I really like those guys. If you like Hunters, you will probably like them, too.
They ended up canceling at the last minute. Spider Bags ended up playing.
It was a fun party. Really just a whole lot of setting around. The performances were short and sweet but I honestly passed out several times throughout the day.

What the hell happened to you?
Not what you would expect. haha
Lack of sleep really got the best of me on Saturday.

Bummer. I'm not too fond of Spider Bags.
I passed out a handful of times at Roo this year. I know how it is.
I wish I could have got up there to listen to music with you guys. I'm really jealous.

For Larry Farnsworth, I had two Valient Thorr sightings since I did not make their day party. One, I about took Valient Himself out on accident coming out of the door after Merzbow/Wolf Eyes. Two, I saw the entire band eating at an outdoor table at a restaurant downtown with their lady friends. It was an interesting visual to see a group of bearded men wearing a lot of denim eating at a nicer restaurant.
That's one of the things I really like about that festival. Seeing other artists "slumming" with the patrons. Like Thurston at Wolf Eyes (Not my eyes, personally) or Protomartyr at Spiritualized or Merzbow at Vanttnet Viskar.

I was telling abrakapokus about this last night. Pharmakon was also in the crowd for Wolf Eyes/Merzbow. Merzbow was in the crowd for part of Inter Arma. I saw a couple of the guys for Inter Arma were out for the Evoken show, and I am pretty sure the guy from Expo '70 was there for the entire night at the Lincoln. Also, Thurston sat at the bar with some friends for at least an hour during the Three Lobed Day party. She countered that, outside of Thurston, these people are not big artists. I responded that, in general, they were not but they were known to the people there for the festival.
Quick poll. Friday night before Hunters, a nice lady offered me some Klonopin in exchange for my wristband. I was correct in turning her down, right?
Its context. If Merzbow was wandering Bonnaroo, no one would know who he was. Festivals like Hopscotch that are smaller and more boutique-y, it feels like there is less of a wall built from the stage to the floor, if that makes sense. They are fans before musicians.
You made the right call. I don't wanna say that woman was f*cked up, but I needed subtitles several times in that convo.

In regards to that, I spent a little of the weekend specifically kind of trying to feel out the festival since it was my first time. One of the things that I noticed was that it seemed like there was a much more kind of serious business vibe to the patrons as a whole. It felt like almost everyone was there to see music as their priority. It didn't seem like there were many people who were there casually because it was something to do or because it served as a backdrop for their weekend of partying. I am not saying that made Hopscotch better or worse than any other festival. Just something I noticed about the overall mood.
That's one of the reasons I love it. It's like a few thousand A$AP Rosko's all in one place. No pushing or shoving to get up front and a lot of "excuse me"'s. It's one of the more (if not the most) civil festivals I've seen.

Text exchange between Abra and I Me: Imagine a festival with everyone from the TML only there is 6,000 of them with a higher percentage of ladies. Abra: There are ladies there?

Was surprised by how poorly Spiritualized was attended. I figured people would at least give them a chance. On the way to the port-o-potties during one song, I had some friends try to get me to go in the photo booth with them, to which I replied "I'm just going to pee, then I'm going back. I'm about to cry this is so good." A bunch of people will never know how good of a set they missed. Easily the best headlining set I've seen at Hopscotch.
Caught On Tape Duo was my the only bad set of the fest I caught (different strokes, I guess.)
Personal top 10: 1. Spiritualized 2. Pontiak (day party) 3. Grouper 4. Angel Olsen 5. Desert Heat (day party) 6. Steve Gunn (day party) 7. Califone 8. Low (would be higher, but I split halfway through to make it in time for Califone, who wound up starting late) 9. Chris Forsyth & The Solar Motel Band 10. Pelt & Daniel Bachman (day party, perfect venue)
