Speaking of utopias, I was thinking on this some. I don't know how many people that I talked to on here that avoid the TML like the plague largely because they are afraid that someone will jump on them if they like/dislike a certain artist or album. There's an entire section of the forum that is lost to them. With private discussion groups, you open up the ability for more casual music fans to create a group without the people that they fear sh*t talking them or the possibility of these people being less intense in the TML because they have a private group to discuss whatever it is they like listening to.
3) Saying that the artist confirmation thread won't take a dip while using the idea of needing to post artist confirmations in one of private threads doesn't really add up, flanzo.
Wait, what? Did I say this by accident? I'm....relaxing(?) after work and didn't mean to say that. I was saying that's one of the threads that will still thrive even with private threads.

When this thread started I was wary about setting up a private sub forum. To me that felt like creating two Troo Music Lounge's - one being invite-only. I didn't like that idea very much as dividing people always causes problems (plus it'd be two TML's that would have to be moderated). The "have-nots" will always complain or have problems with the "haves". But the suggestion and discussion made it's way more towards a group message type thing....something similar to other boards and I think there's some definite benefits to it. Obviously we don't want to do anything to drastically alter the activity on the main boards but having group threads/messages that allow interaction between a few seems to be not much different than what happens now (with PMs). Obviously, we'd want to upgrade it and make it better than it currently but I feel like this is possible. We'll be looking into this and trying to find the best solution so that everyone can be happy.
We don't want to split inforoo. I would be sad if a portion of the regular posters cut back on the TML because they had a private section. But if some people want to have a private chat to share links or discuss certain topics or set meet-ups without outside interference I don't think that's a huge problem.

P.S. part of me just wants a thread where I can discuss college football without having to here baselessly disparage the SEC. I will also be free to feel good for steph when Clemson wins that way. ;D

Like a group where only Channel Orange haters are allowed?

It's what you gave the impression of saying. I may have been reading too much into it.

I have taken abuse over my music taste in the past. I will take it in the future the next time I don't drink the Kool-Aid on a certain album. It doesn't really bother me.

I think people are too caught up with thinking that private threads will take content away from the main boards. I look at the private threads more as an avenue to discuss stuff that wouldn't get discussed at all because it's too public.
Everyone is looking at the Coachella board as an example of a place where nothing good happens in the public spaces. But I think it's inappropriate to assume the private groups are the cause of the asshattery over there, rather than the asshattery necessitating the private groups.

I don't think the artist confirmation thread should be public at all, but that's just me. I don't think the public face of inforoo should be encouraging or even allowing any one with a computer to email booking agents pretending to be a pregnant woman.
Ideally, private threads wouldn't draw from attention to other threads on this board, but as Karosko (Deputy Hawk for those constantly lost as to his handle) pointed out earlier, look how little attention the TML has gotten in the past few hours while this thread has been given more attention by established members.
This happens every year about this time. Its the month before the lineup drop where anticipation is high and we need something to complain about. I started a thread last year about a "newbie waiting period". I'm also proud to say that is my only locked thread in 5 years.
I don't 100% agree with having a private section on a public message board. Its irritating, yes, but no matter how you cut it, its just not right.
The last time this argument came up another board popped up and a lot of veteran posters were lost to that. I don't wanna see that happen again. Its a hard thing to overcome.
That said, the TML is becoming a joke. Remember life before insider? This place wasn't spoonfed the info, we looked for it. We sniffed it out and in a lot of cases, we found it (re: Direct Artist Conformation Thread). It gets old reading "Where's Insider?!?" every 3 posts and holy shiz, the Bowie argument, the fact of the matter is everyone should have the ability to be involved and shamed till they delete their account, if not.
Notice how the board runs in the off-season? Yeah, I look forward to July too. I look forward to spending my time with my friends and learning about new music and making meetup plans at other festivals. Inforoo to me isn't about Bonnaroo anymore, its about music and friends and all the other things that we are all here for.

Private threads would make the TML a lot nicer because we wouldn't be so quick to yell at the new people that post dumb sh*t in the middle of a good discussion. We'd save the good stuff for when it's really needed, like anytime GreatAmerican tries to get big in the Headliner thread.

I don't really approve of it but what exactly do you propose we do? Hack his e-mail and make sure he can't send e-mails out? We don't "allow" people to e-mail anything...they do that on their own.

Mod and delete any information he's getting, or delete peoples screen grabs of emails with agents. Again, that's just me.
I think this is the perfect example of something where you could say "take this to a private thread." Yeah, Gab can do what he wants, but you really don't want Inforoo's name on this shitt, you guys have a good relationship with the Capp dogg, and I'd hate to see the perks (Moog brunch, Insider) lost because some dufus is posting the leaks on Bonnaroo's facebook.

As far as having individual groups to discuss certain artist or genres goes we will have those in the option of a thread once a lineup has been announced and ITM will once again provide us with the thread index to make finding those easy. We already have threads for "fun" EDM, metal, hip hop, and many other varieties of music that anyone is welcome to. I would hope that people are not staying away from those in fear of being blasted for their taste. I like the having contrasting opinions and being exposed to new artist in these threads.

Another hypothetical: Could you imagine the shittstorm if there was some credible rumor of Kanye coming back? It would basically be impossible to discuss on here. That sucks.

I think Zapp has brought this up before, but I do wish we had more avid discussion about music. I like hearing people discuss their favorite music and why it is so. One of my favorites recently was the modern bluegrass / pop folk discussion in the grievances thread. If private threads could lead to this occurring more often, then I'm all for them.

The Which stage has plenty of awesome music discussion. If there's not a thread for a topic you want to discuss just make one and it'll fill up pretty quick.

The direct confirmation thread needs to definitely be privatized after what happened today. I think if inforoo wants to keep writing agents and getting responses from them and if we want to keep AC and the Bonnaroo folks happy to let us alone, than somehow the information needs to be kept under wraps. Anybody, and this will happen again, I'm sure, can post the information anywhere. What about contracts bands have with AC and vice versa? Sooner or later, it could potentially lead to something more detrimental, maybe something damaging for inforoo.

Today is not the first time people have taken the leaks found here and posted them to Bonnaroo's facebook page (or some blog or other message board/site). Hell, in the past it wasn't much different than when CoS would post up confirmations without sources (also partially taken from here). It hasn't been a problem yet and if it becomes one we will take action. This will be discussed by the mods though for sure.
Inforoo is such a small actual portion of Roo attendees and a majority of the people who will be at Roo this year likely wouldn't have read the leaks on here or on the facebook page. Not everyone is as hardcore about the festival as we are lol

^I didn't know it ended up on Bonnaroo's facebook page in the past. I was aware of CoS and some other leaks last year. I thought today was different but I'm wrong. It just got me thinking about a potential sh*tstorm, that's all.
Yeah, I totally agree that most people aren't even ever gonna be aware of this information. For some reason today, that Johnny Bieber kid just got me ticked off.
